Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

by Lisa Levy

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session.https://listentodrlisa.com/

DLG311b Musician Deb O'Nair talks about her band, The Fuzztones and the search for her birth mother.

59m · Published 29 Dec 00:12
The Fuzztones were born in the summer of 1980, in the bowels of New York City's Lower East Side. "Alphabet City" to be exact. Rudi Protrudi and Deb O'Nair had moved there from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, five years earlier, with their band Tina Peel . Das Fürlines from New York City, USA were an influential, all-female "punk-polka" band in the mid-1980s, renowned for their rousing performances. Contents 1History 2Members 3Albums 4References 5Further reading 6External links History[edit] Das Fürlines appeared on the US TV shows Entertainment Tonight and Andy Warhol's 15 Minutes in 1985, and released their debut album Das Fürlines Go Hog Wild on their own label, Palooka Records. Their next album, Lost in the Translation (1986), was a lot more contextual than Go Hog Wild. In 1988, they released a concept album, The Angry Years, which was inspired by the self-help book Women Who Love Too Much. They split up acrimoniously in 1988 after a spate of betrayal and infighting during a tour. They released the four-CD compilation Bratwurst, Bierhalls, and Bustiers: The Box Set, which contained various outtakes, B-sides, and rarities. They reformed in 1996 to perform a few benefit concerts to raise money for lead singer Wendy Wild's medical bills. She died of cancer in 1996. Members[edit] ·      Wendy Wild – vocals, banjo, guitar (b. Wendy Andreiev, August 31, 1956, USA, d. Deb O’Nair was a famous musician living the life in NYC headlining all the clubs, Mudd Club, while I was going to an office everyday.   It was an honor when Deb reached out to me to express interest in discussing the trauma she’s dealing with around having been abandoned at birth until she was adopted at 5 months old by her parents. Deb contacted her birth mother about 20 years ago and learned more about her early life after her mother died in 2020. In this session we get some sense of Deb life growing up in a strict catholic home and breaking out, moving to NYC and getting involved in the music business and touring with bands as a young person very much on her own.

DLG317 Artist Scooter LaForge's life is a great example of a life in art to me.

59m · Published 23 Dec 17:09
Artist Scooter LaForge is a delight. To be honest, I somehow felt like connecting with him on this show was healing for me-now who’s the shrink!? Scooter’s work is amazing and so instinctual- he cannot not do it. Even though he’s worked with big names like he is as humble as can be. So much to learn from his perspective—growing up as a gay man in a tiny town in Arizona. I have to say I was envious hearing of all the free-range outdoor time he had, but alas the town, it’s sounds really small and devoid of gays which means a pretty homogenous group of people (boring!) Scooter is the best of what an artist is—someone fueled by their work and satisfied because of it. He complimented me a lot, so I’m going to give him an A as a guest rating. Follow and learn more about Scooter HERE: https://www.scooter-laforge.com/ Instagram @scooterlaforge @scooter_laforge_a_life_of_art/ BIO: Scooter Laforge began his love affair with art at a very young age while growing up in the small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His burning desire to render things beautifully began with his singer/songwriter mother, and his landscape painting father; both equally inspired his creativity and lust for art. Laforge’s work can be characterized as Pop Art partnered with abstract expressionism and Dutch classicism. His paintings and drawings are portraitures, landscapes, and objective subject matter, utilizing his special painting techniques and incorporating his homoerotic, in your face, non-apologetic lifestyle.  Like Golden Books on acid, his work employs a 50’s illustrated storybook technique, modernized by 70’s color palettes and are influenced heavily by gay pornography, cute fluffy animals, and sometimes iconic cartoons (i.e. SpongeBob Square Pants, The Cookie Monster, and Popeye and Brutis) which are reoccurring characters and themes within his work.  LaForge earned his BFA from the University of Arizona in 1993,[5] and began his career as a painter in San Francisco.[6] He moved to New York City in 2001,[3] where he attended the Cooper Union School of Art under a fellowship.[8] His art is in the collections of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art[9] and Beth Rudin DeWoody.[10] LaForge has a line of hand-painted, unique clothing items that are sold through fashion stylist Patricia Field.[11] He has twice collaborated with Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.[12][13] His clothing has been worn by Susanne Bartsch,[14] Sandra Bernhard,[15] Beyoncé,[8] Miley Cyrus,[6] Boy George,[3] Debbie Harry,[8] Nicki Minaj,[3] Madonna,[8] Iggy Pop,[3] Rihanna,[6] and Lil Wayne.[3]

DLG316 Edward Farrell gets down to serious business in comedy

59m · Published 21 Dec 16:35
I had dropped into Brklyn Comedy Club on my way home recently and caught this comedian, Edward Farrell, performing and I loved his act—it was highly original as was his character on stage. When I got home I looked him up and found out he owned 2 bars and the club that I saw him perform in! I got in touch with him and voila‑he was on the show! I dug in heartily and got to know Edward a bit through this session. He’s an introvert with an extrovert’s career. He’s from a long line of self-starters. He’s had mentors like Steve Lewishttps://stevelewisdesign.com/clubs We delve into how he’s gotten to where he is and took a look at where he’s heading. His club is great. If you like comedy-check it out.

DLG315 Sean Spada takes us behind the curtain for his new album, "The Wild Ride".

59m · Published 06 Dec 19:45
Tom Gallo of Look at My Records describes Sean and his new album better and more accurately than I can: "SEAN SPADA is the real deal, a hard-working, consummate-pro piano everyman who would never dream of insultingly patronizing the sad sacks at the bar because clearly he identifies with and counts himself among the sad sacks at the bar new album The Wild Ride… but either way it's a ride that never flies off the rails thanks to the ever-present guard rails of Sean’s sensitive, skillful piano playing to the point where I’m moved to proclaim The Wild Ride the world’s first psychedelic piano lounge yacht-rock-run-aground rock operetta, a character study of a piano man who may be “Set Up To Self Destruct” but who’s nonetheless “Getting on the Highway” with predictable results perhaps but all the more stirring for seeing it coming..." I've know Sean for a while and his music/music career has evolved in a pretty exciting way. He's got mad skills! The visualization of his music in his videos have added a serious creative level to the work as well. Sean is candid and articulate about the ideas behind his work and the music business in general. There is a lot of kidding around in this episode because neither he nor I take ourselves too seriously which is part of the fun here. DLG314_Comedian Christian Finnegan's childhood was not funny...

59m · Published 24 Nov 18:14
Christian made a repeat visit to RFB so we could talk about his family history, which is pretty complex. You can see how it does make sense that he's a comedian though—a sharp sense of humor is a testament to his survival skills! His younger brother was born when Christian was 8 and his older brother was 10. His younger brother was born with a serious heart ailment which by necessity became the focus of his parents. His mother had Borderline Personality Disorder and was super dramatic. Let's just say this was hard on his dad too. His parents split up. Christian father enrolled Christian into a boarding school for performing arts when he reached high school age which set him free—well somewhat. This is an inspiring story of a resilient young man who became a successful comedian with a fantastic marriage in spite of a dramatically difficult beginning. Subscribe to Christian Finnegan's new Substack: https://newmusicforolds.substack.com/ and keep you up to date with his expertly curated new music. I listen to new music. I’m perpetually chasing that new car smell. I spend hours every week scrolling through various New Release sections and indiscriminately clicking play. Results are inconsistent, but that’s okay—it’s primarily an avoidance mechanism! But as a result, I always have at least one new song to love. More about Christian HERE: https://christianfinnegan.com/ Twitter: @ChristFinnegan HERE'S an earlier Dr. Lisa Episode where Christian talks about his recent special: Show Your Work BIO: Christian Finnegan is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City. In high school he attended Walnut Hill, a boarding school focused programs in the performing, visual, and creative arts located in Natick, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of NYU where he studied acting and playwriting. He began his stand up career in 1995 in New York and regularly performs at comedy clubs and colleges around the country. Over the years, Christian has been a fixture on Comedy Central, having starred in his own one hour stand up special “Au Contraire”, as well as “Comedy Central Presents”, “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and countless network interstitials. He’s also appeared on “Conan”, “The Late Late Show with James Corden”, “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show”. When not on tour, Christian Finnegan can usually be found in Queens helping his wife, author Kambri Crews, with her venue QED Astoria or walking their faithful pooches, Griswold and Chief Billy Bowlegs.

DLG313 Photographer Kate Stremoukhova gives us the feeling of how surreal it was to be in the middle of bombing in Kyiv.

55m · Published 15 Nov 00:38
Kate Stremoukhova is a talented artist and commercial photographer/videographer in business with her husband, living in Kyiv, Ukraine until 6 months ago. This session with Kate is so remarkable because I found her so relatable and she was very generous in sharing her experience living through bombings, leaving her home there and finally getting to NYC. She hasn’t seen her husband since she left as he is still in Ukraine. When she left her home, she only expected to be gone a few days and she has yet to be back. She is currently waiting for the paperwork so she can go back and see her husband. This session is very moving; Kate made real the surrealistic nature of not being able to imagine a war and then one day you are in it. Kate has gotten some work here and is helping teach art to Ukraine high school students who have moved here and are in a school that is half American and half Ukrainian. She does not have a concrete plan yet, which is unsettling yet freeing at the same time. Dr. Lisa was grateful for this growth experience she got from meeting Kate. Here's one example of Kates work. Follow her here: https://www.instagram.com/katestremoukhova/ And check out her work and more on her website HERE: https://stremoukhova.com/

DLG312 Comedian Michael Regilio stops by while on tour here from LA!

55m · Published 07 Nov 00:30
Michael is an amazing LA comic here for a week of shows in NYC. His presence is a delight on stage but its his writing that supreme -extremely smart and original. We learn that Regilio has had a problem seeing out of one eye since birth and had to wear an eyepatch until around the age of 7. He grew up in a strict Catholic household where he was the king of outsiders in school. You'll have to listen, but there's so many crazy hijinks that happened because his school decided he was gay (he's not-though he is a sincere, hearty ally) and told his parents. He got beat up and bullied a lot. All this to say he is now an accomplished comedian and musician who is very happily married. https://www.michaelregiliocomedy.com/

DLG217 Dr. Lisa gets schooled by Jacq the Stripper. We discuss sexual currency and that stuff too.

59m · Published 23 Oct 19:07
One of the best , most entertaining books I audiobooked this year, is a memoir by Jacq The Stripper titled: The Beaver Show-she reads it herself., it's SO SMART and HILARIOUS. In this session with Jacq, I LEARNED a lot! I thought I knew something about strippers/stripping, but I don't think I've gotten to talk to someone who's as articulate, positive and empowering about it, as Jacq is. Also Jacq is expert. She was a consultant on the movie, Hustler with JLo. We had a deep, satisfying as well as amusing! conversation about sexual currency. For example we discussed how would you parent a 11 year old girl who had developed large breasts, knowing she would be a magnet for attention. What is the responsibility that women have to other women for promoting and using their own sexual currency? It was great to sit down to have a direct and mutually respectful, not without humor conversation about stuff you're not supposed to talk about. Bottom line on Jacq is-she is an entrepreneur and an advocate for sex workers. She's super hard working, creative, self-motivated, resourceful—great with people and would likely be successful at any endeavor she focused on. So go to her site and buy some of her merch! Photo by: Rachel Lena Esterline Here's an excerpt from her book, The Beaver Show: "I dance. Naked. For large (and occasionally insultingly modest) sums of money." It all started five years ago in Sydney, Australia when she was just 23: “I still wanted to be a traveler, just not a poor one anymore. So I shaved my legs and bush, showed up to the first Google search result that came up for ‘gentlemen’s club Sydney,’ got naked for this old fat guy named Jim and, to my surprise, I liked it. A lot.” Stripping is about feeling powerful, sexy, and endlessly curious about how far a dude’s kinks will go (‘show me your armpits’) and how much he is willing to pay for them ($1200). And the money’s sexy.

DLG311 Discovering artist Nick Greenwald is influenced by his dad more than what was obvious.

59m · Published 09 Oct 17:54
Dr. Lisa wants to know why Nick isn't more active in promoting his work. This therapy session uncovers Nicks complex relationship with his work and how it's tied into his relationship with his parents who are both artists. Together Nick and Dr. Lisa figure out why these relationships may be getting in his way of where his art career could be going. Nick's work is INCREDIBLE. Check it out! Here's more.
