Composer, performer, and social justice artist, Anthony R. Ep. 8-Don-Paul Kahl

Described by distinguished American composer John Corigliano as an "artist beyond his time," concert saxophonist, Don-Paul Kahl has performed throughout Europe, the United States, Australia, and South-East Asia. He has appeared as soloist with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra, the University of Florida Wind Symphony, and the Susquehanna University Orchestra. 

An ardent supporter and advocate of contemporary and modern music, Don-Paul has been involved in the creation and performance of over 100 new works for saxophone by some of the most talented and award winning young composers of the time. Recently commissioned composers include Ramon Lazkano, Max Grafe, David Biedenbender, Nicolas Tzortzis, María Eugenia Luc, Gregory Wanamaker, Simone Movio, Chris Dench, Julien Malaussena, among many others.

As an avid and in-demand chamber musician, Don-Paul is active with the international interdisciplinary saxophone quartet, Ensemble du Bout du Monde (EBM), his duo with clarinetist, Jackie Glazier, Duo Entre-Nous (D2), and with a newly formed Belgian based reed quintet, WoodWork. 

Don-Paul was a prizewinner at the prestigious 4th Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2019, EBM won the third and special prizes at the International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach, France. In 2017, they garnered first and special prizes at the Concours d'Interprétation de la Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt. Don-Paul was also awarded the Harriett Hale Woolley Scholarship for academic study in Paris, France for the 2013-2014 year. Other awards include prizewinner in the 2013 Marco Fiorindo Chamber Music Competition, University of Florida Concerto Competition, and the Susquehanna University Concerto Competition, along with several others.

Don-Paul is an avid clinician and gives masterclasses throughout Europe and the United States. Currently, he serves on the faculty at the Susquehanna University High School Wind Ensemble Institute in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He also holds the position of the saxophone chair in the Ocala Symphony Orchestra in Ocala, Florida. Previously, he has served on the adjunct faculty at the College of Central Florida  in Ocala, Florida where he taught applied study in both saxophone and clarinet.  

Currently, Don-Paul is living and working as a freelance saxophonist based both in Belgium and the United States. He is also a doctoral candidate for the Ph.D in Artistic Research in collaboration with Leiden University (NL) and the Orpheus Institute (BE). In 2017, he completed a post-graduate performatory research program at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, Belgium. Previously, he earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University (Summa Cum Laude). His primary teachers and mentors are Jean-Michel Goury, Marcus Weiss, Jonathan Helton, Geoffrey Deibel, and Gail B. Levinsky, with additional study with Frederick L. Hemke.

Erin Rogers is a saxophonist and composer based in New York City. Named a “rising star” (Broadway World), her music has been described as “whimsical, theatrical” (Brooklyn Vegan), “a wild ride” (An Earful), and “so complex, it’s primitive.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). She is co-artistic director of thingNY, Popebama, New Thread Saxophone Quartet, and Hypercube, and has performed with the International Contemporary Ensemble, wildUp, and Talea, at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Edmonton Fringe Festival, Resonanzraum (Hamburg), Centro Nacional de las Artes Mexico City, and the Park Avenue Armory. Rogers has been featured on the Ecstatic Music Festival, Prototype Festival, MATA Festival, the Elbphilharmonie’s “Unterdeck”, and NYmusikk Bergen, crossing genres from opera-to-theatre-to-installation-to-silence, through collaborations with Orange Theatre, Panoply Performance Lab, wasteLAnd, Harvestworks, yarn|wire, Experiments-in-Opera, Decoder, Contemporaneous, yarn/wire and Music for Contemplation. Ep. 6- Elizabeth Rosinbum

Elizabeth Rosinbum leads a multi-faceted career as an educator, performer, clinician, and speaker. She is Adjunct Professor of Saxophone at Concordia University Texas, and maintains a select private studio as the lead saxophone instructor in one of the most competitive districts in the state. Her commitment to educating the next generation of musicians has led to numerous successful enterprises beyond her private teaching career. Rosinbum was the first-ever saxophonist to be hired as a D'Addario Woodwinds clinician. In addition to giving hundreds of educational masterclasses, she mentors other clinicians in multiple states.

Elizabeth has commissioned and premiered works for saxophone throughout the United States and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician, and currently serves on the board of the Austin Saxophone Ensemble. A gifted speaker, she has lectured at several universities throughout the U.S. and abroad on woodwind pedagogy, entrepreneurship, performance psychology, and career strategies and business skills.

Ep. 5- Julian Hernandez

Julian enjoys numerous solo, chamber, and orchestral engagements across the U.S. He
currently serves as clarinetist with Houston-based wind quintet, WindSync. He
previously served as principal clarinetist of the Fayetteville Symphony from 2014-2016
and performs regularly with the Charleston Symphony (SC). He has performed with the
Lansing Symphony, Waco Symphony, Mid-Texas Symphony, and the Akropolis Reed
Quintet. Festival appearances include: New York String Orchestra Seminar (NYSOS),
Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA), and Texas Music Festivals. He is a graduate of
the Youth Orchestra of the Americas’ Global Leaders Training program that aims to
build social music programs in the most remote and dynamic parts of the world.
Through Global Leaders, Julian has had the privilege to present masterclasses and
build educational residences in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Suriname’s
Nationale Volksmuziekschool. As a full-time chamber musician with WindSync, he has
had the privilege to travel the world performing recitals and giving master classes at
venus such as: Carnegie Hall, Ravinia Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music
Festival. When not obsessing over chamber music, Julian can be found teaching indoor
spin or rowing classes or binging on Netflix TV shows. Julian attended Baylor
University, the University of Michigan, and the Eastman School of Music. His primary
teachers include: Dr. Richard Shanley, Alan Olson, Dan Gilbert, and Kenneth Grant.

Ryan Muncy is saxophonist of the International Contemporary Ensemble, having been praised for his “amazing virtuosity” (The Chicago Tribune) and ability to "show off the instrument's malleability and freakish extended range as well as its delicacy and refinement" (The Chicago Reader). He is a recipient of the Kranichstein Music Prize awarded at the 46th Darmstadt Summer Courses, a Fulbright Fellowship in France, the Edes Foundation Prize for Emerging Artists, and has participated in the creation of more than 250 new works for the saxophone, highlighted by deeply collaborative relationships with leading artist-creators including Ashley Fure, Tyshawn Sorey, Wang Lu, Marcos Balter, Wojtek Blecharz, and Matana Roberts. Muncy received his doctorate from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where he studied with Frederick L. Hemke. He studied previously with John Sampen (Bowling Green State University), Jean-Michel Goury (CRR Boulogne-Billancourt), George Wolfe (Ball State University), and Jean-Yves Fourmeau (CNR Cergy-Pontoise). Ryan currently serves on the music faculty of The New School’s College of Performing Arts (Mannes School of Music) in New York City, in addition to his role as the Director of Institutional Giving of the International Contemporary Ensemble.

Ep. 3- Nick Dunston

Nick Dunston is a Brooklyn-based composer, improviser, and instrumentalist. An “indispensable player on the New York avant-garde" (New York Times), his performances have also spanned a variety of venues and festivals across North America and Europe. He's performed, toured, and recorded professionally with bands led by artists such as  Vijay Iyer, Marc Ribot, Ches Smith, Imani Uzuri, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber, Amirtha Kidambi, Amir ElSaffar, Allison Miller, and Darius Jones. 

In 2019 he was awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, which supported the world premieres of The Floor is Lava! (upright bass quintet), and La Operación (double saxophone trio + soprano voice), referred to as “a work so dramatic and large that is both a response to socio-historical truth as well as a reflection on his own identity…” (I Care If You Listen). In 2019 he released his debut album, Atlantic Extraction, which “features the unusual instrumentation of double bass, drums, electric guitar, flute, [and violin]- and his compositions put that configuration to imaginative use.” (The Wire Magazine). As a writer, he's made monthly contributions to Hot House Jazz Magazine from 2016-2019.

Andy Hudson is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and the NC State Chair for the International Clarinet Association. He has appeared in Carnegie Hall’s ‘Weill Recital Hall,’ Chicago’s ‘Symphony Center,’ and has performed at the World Congress of the International Alliance for Women in Music, College Music Society conferences in the US and Canada, the New Music Gathering, and International Clarinet Association Festivals in the US and Europe. Andy has commissioned or premiered dozens fo works to date, and has performed as guest principal clarinet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Opera, and the Carolina Ballet. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their MusicNOW series and was appointed 3rd/Bass Clarinetist of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in 2020. (They/Them/Theirs: Anishinaabe, Nipissing First Nation) Olivia Shortt is a Tkarón:to-based multi-disciplinary performing artist. They are a saxophonist, vocalist, noisemaker, improviser, composer, sound designer, curator, and producer.

Highlights for Olivia include their film debut playing saxophone & acting in Atom Egoyan’s 2019 film Guest of Honour; their Lincoln Center (NYC) debut with the International Contemporary Ensemble; their Australian debut performing with keyboardist Jacob Abela in Melbourne; and recording an album two kilometres underground with their duo Stereoscope in the SnoLAB (a Neutrino Lab in Northern Ontario, Canada).

As a Metcalf Performing Arts Intern in Producing, they were mentored by Brittany Ryan, Producer of Nightswimming and General Manager of Signal Theatre. They have been named a 2020 cohort member of Why Not Theatre's ThisGEN Fellowship in Sound Design and are presenting their work 'ishkwe-ayi'ii' as part Upintheair Theatre's e-Volver festival in June 2020.

Their most recent works include 'Mana-Hatta', a musical land acknowledgement created in collaboration with the students of Face The Music in NYC, composition and sound design for plays 'Welcome To My Underworld', as well as 'Brain Storm'. Olivia is currently in the 2019-2021 JACK Studio and is working on a new composition 'the body remembers' to be premiered in 2021 for the quartet.

As an activist, they are alumni of the 2018 cohort of the artEquity facilitator training program (New Orleans, LA), as well as the 2019 Toronto Arts Council’s Leaders Lab and was a lead organizer and co-founded the Toronto Creative Music Lab (TCML). www.olivia-shortt.com
