Less Than Jake is one of the biggest ska punk bands of all time, and they have been around the block and had a drink or two during their 25+ years of making music and touring the world.

We met up with Buddy and JR from Less Than Jake for a beverage and a conversation backstage before their set at the Scallywag! Craft Beer and Music Festival in San Diego, CA. In this episode, they share some thoughts on what it takes to remain creative and relevant as a musician, as well as a couple drinking stories that may or may not be at the expense of their bandmates.

GABF 2018 “Half Pint” | Seek the Independent Craft Brewer Seal | Julia Herz, Brewers Association

11m · Published 26 Nov 11:00

Did you know that 98 percent of today’s 6,000+ (and counting) U.S. breweries are independent, but make up only 13 percent of the beer market by volume? Most don’t. But with the recently-introduced Independent Craft Brewer Seal, folks like Julia Herz are helping you know when you’re drinking a true craft beer.

Julia is the Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, and a driving force behind their “That’s Independence You’re Tasting” campaign. As large macrobreweries continue to buy up small, independent breweries, it’s becoming increasingly harder to tell when you’re drinking a craft beer, or a simply something that simply looks like a craft brew.

In this final episode from the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Julia shares all the details behind the seal, what it stands for, and why it’s more important than ever for beer drinkers to #SeekTheSeal and support independent craft breweries.

Ep. 44 | Untappd Co-Founders Greg Avola & Tim Mather | Live from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO

22m · Published 12 Nov 11:00

If you’re a millennial beer lover (or heck, a beer lover of any age!) then you know Untappd. In this app, beer drinkers can check-in, review, and share pictures of the beer they’ve got in front of them. Simply put, Untappd is the social media platform for beer.

Co-Founders Tim Mather and Greg Avola had never met before they found one another on Twitter, and while they created the app assuming only a handful of their friends would give it a shot, Untappd now has well over 8 million users.

I met up with Greg and Tim in the middle of this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, and amidst all of the beer-fueled chaos, they were able to share the story behind Untappd’s growth and the lessons learned (and beers consumed) along the way.

GABF 2018 “Half Pint” | Aaron Johnson | Host of the Cascadian Beer Podcast

13m · Published 22 Oct 10:00

It’s not often that we get to feature other beer podcasters on the Pubcast, but the Great American Beer Festival was the perfect spot for some quick collaborations.

Aaron Johnson hosts the Cascadian Beer Podcast, a show that highlights the stories behind craft beer in the Pacific Northwest. Aaron was also at GABF covering the festival for his podcast, and after we sampled some brews together, we jumped behind the mics to discuss the event, a few of our favorite beers from the weekend, and Aaron’s own international journey that got him into beer podcasting.

Ep. 43 | Mike Boyd | Head of Music Partnerships & Artist Relations at VaynerMedia | Live from Departed Soles Brewing in Jersey City, NJ

1h 2m · Published 15 Oct 10:00

Mike Boyd has had an ear for talent in the hip-hop world for over a decade. From St. Louis to Atlanta to New York City, Mike has managed artists like Rome Fortune and Richie Souf, and is currently the Head of Music Partnerships & Artist Relations for Gary Vaynerchuk.

Mike was able to take a quick break from picking out the next big thing in music to meet up for a beer and an interview at Departed Soles Brewing in Jersey City, NJ. In this episode, Mike takes us through some wild stories of his time working in the music industry, what he looks for in the people and artists that he works with, and how the worlds of entrepreneurship, social media, and hip-hop have converged in his career.

And yes, we talk about what it’s like to work closely with Gary Vaynerchuk. We discuss the ’Monday to Monday’ playlist that Mike and Gary co-curate on a weekly basis, and how hip-hop plays into Gary’s personality and strategy.

The Great American Beer Festival – known more simply as GABF – is the largest beer event in North America. Since 1982, craft beer lovers have been descending upon Denver, CO every fall for a long weekend full of beer tastings, awards, and other brew-fueled events around the Denver area.

In this first bonus episode of our 2018 GABF mini-series, Chris provides a quick overview of the main event at the Colorado Convention Center, this year’s awards ceremony, and the stories and mayhem that ensue all weekend long. Ep. 42 | “Flight School” with Dois Corvos | Live from Lisbon, Portugal

21m · Published 24 Sep 10:00

Portugal is home to some extreme craft beers. Who knew? Well, you will after this international edition of “Flight School”…

In this episode, we meet up with Scott Steffens, co-founder of Lisbon’s Dois Corvos Cervejeira. After moving from Seattle to Lisbon with his wife and co-founder in 2012, Scott’s West Coast palate knew there was something missing in the Portuguese beer market. After turning his homebrewing hobby into a business, fast-forward 5 years, and now Dois Corvos is the centerpiece of Lisbon’s recently revitalized Marvila neighborhood, otherwise known as the unofficial “Lisbon Beer District.”

Stick around as Scott takes us through a flight of 4 creative beers while giving us a history of their brewery, and a verbal walking tour of Lisbon’s craft beer culture. Saúde!

Ep. 41 | Travis Sherry | Professional Traveler at Extra Pack of Peanuts | Live from Love City Brewing in Philadelphia, PA

1h 2m · Published 10 Sep 10:00

Travis Sherry is a “Professional Traveler,” and that title really does cover about as many categories as you might expect. From his travel podcast Extra Pack of Peanuts to his new app Jetto for finding flight deals (and just about everything in between), Travis has made a name for himself as a travel hacking expert and internet entrepreneur.

Yet despite his location independent status, Travis calls Philadelphia home, and that’s where we met up for today’s episode.

Being as big a fan of beer as I am, Travis and I “rendezbrewed” at Love City Brewing just north of Philly’s Center City. We cover everything from airline travel hacks to drinking Eastern European moonshine in Montenegro, and as a new dad, Trav even shares some tips on continuing to traveling internationally with children. But eventually all roads lead back to Philly, so make sure to tune in if you want to get a local’s take on the best cheesesteaks around town.

Ep. 40 | Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly | Historian at Belfast’s Dead Centre Tours | Live from The Garrick Bar in Belfast, Northern Ireland

53m · Published 20 Aug 10:00

20 years ago, you wouldn’t be traveling to the destination for this episode. Northern Ireland – and specifically Belfast – was ground zero for a nationalist conflict known as The Troubles, a decades-long bloody conflict between Loyalists determined to defend their British heritage, and Republicans seeking a united Ireland.

But since the late 90’s, Belfast and Northern Ireland have changed, and our guest today is the perfect person to walk us through that evolving peace process. Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly is a history teacher by trade, but that barely scratches the surface. He’s been a mediator between Loyalist and Republican groups in Northern Ireland, working on dialogue projects between Loyalist and Republican ex-prisoners to help facilitate peace since the ceasefire.

Donzo now leads Dead Centre Tours – Belfast’s #1 walking tour – taking participants first-hand through the history of The Troubles, while including the other cultural elements that make Belfast as unique as it is edgy, from sports to punk rock.

I met up with Donzo at The Garrick Bar on my latest Europe trip, an old Victorian-style Irish pub near Belfast’s City Centre. Grab a pint of Guinness, and pull up a chair for this big conversation.
