Run Eat Drink Podcast

by Aimee Coston

Welcome to the Run Eat Drink Podcast!  This is the podcast where we embark on exciting adventures, combining our love for running, delicious food, and tasty beverages. Whether you’re an elite runner aiming for victory or just starting your “Couch to 5K” journey, we’ve got something for you. Let’s dive into the three pillars of our show:

  1. Accomplish (Run): Accomplishment is deeply personal. Are you eyeing a race series win, planning your next “run-cation,” or hoping to set a personal record in your next half-marathon? Each week, we feature fantastic destination races from around the country. Discover scenic courses, learn about the charities they support, and get inspired to lace up those running shoes. And when we’re not on the road, we share interviews, training tips, and insights from our own running journey.
  2. Explore (Eat): Running and traveling go hand in hand. As we explore new places, we also explore local cuisine. We seek out hidden gems—the eateries that locals rave about. Bold flavors, interesting dishes, and passion for food—that’s what we’re after. After each race, join us as we wander the city streets, discovering post-race refueling spots. Whether it’s a gastropub, a food truck, or a cozy café, we’ve got dining options to satisfy your cravings.
  3. Indulge (Drink): When the running is done, it’s time to unwind. We raise our glasses to celebrate our accomplishments. Local breweries, coffee shops, speakeasies, and watering holes—these are our destinations. From craft beers to artisanal cocktails, we explore the beverage scene. Cheers to a well-deserved drink after crossing the finish line!

Join us on this journey of accomplishment, exploration, and indulgence. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a curious foodie, there’s a place for you at the Run Eat Drink Podcast.

RED Episode 250 Runcation Recap of the 2023 Keys 100

SHOUT OUTS

Thanks to all our patrons and everyone in the Runcation Nation for your support and encouragement.  Because of you, we have been able to keep the show going over the last two years, and now that the races are returning, we look forward to meeting up with you, too!

If you want a shoutout for you or someone you love on the show,  email us at [email protected] or call us and leave a message at 941-677-2733.

Dean Gerber wanted to thank his wife and sister, Judy Gerber and Linda Meyers, for supporting him during the Keys 100.

Judy sent in an email shoutout for Dean as well.  Her email read, “I want to shout out my husband, Dean, who ran the Keys 100 ultramarathon this past weekend.  Not only doing it for himself but is partnering with a friend who is injured to help him finish as well.”  Way to go, Dean!

For anyone who would like a shoutout on the show, please don’t forget to send them to us.  We do our best to collect weekly shoutouts, but please send them our way!  Please send them to [email protected] or call 941-677-2733!

Thank you to Joanne Blatchley and Dean Gerber, Associate Producers of our show.  Thank you to Josh Ozbirn, Executive Producer of the podcast, too!  We couldn’t do it without you.

RUN

This is a landmark episode number, and we are nearing our sixth anniversary of the show.  So, we wanted to introduce a new kind of episode in our feed, starting with episode 250 this week.  We are introducing Runcation Recaps.  These are episodes featuring members of the Runcation Nation telling us about a fantastic race weekend.  This allows everyone in our community to learn about amazing race weekends nationwide.

This week we welcome long-time patrons of our show, Dean and Judy Gerber.  They are joined by another patron of ours over on Buy Me A Coffee, who happens to be Dean’s sister, Linda Meyers.  Together they recap the 2023 Keys 100.  All of them were so gracious with their time.  It was so important to have them all here because, unlike a race with water stops, you have to provide your crew at this one.  There are laughs, inspirational moments, and all kinds of tips for this epic race weekend.

You can find Dean, Judy, and Linda here:

Dean:  @dwgerb

Linda:  @lindygmyers

Judy:  @sleepgal67

More information about Dean’s new running project that he talked about in this episode is available at @florida_scrub_runner

The nutrition and hydration options Dean used can be found here: hammernutrition.com

EAT

No recap would be complete for the Runcation Nation without discussing exploring and indulging in local food and beverage.  Dean, Judy, and Linda talk about the fuel, food, and drinks Dean used along the course and the options he brought from hammernutrition.com.

Before the race is the time to carb-load, right?  Dean, Judy, and Linda talk about their pre-race meal at Cafe DiGiorgio’s in Key Largo near the start of the race.  For the garlic knots alone, I want to go.  Dean and the crew highly recommend the staff and meals here if you consider this race weekend or a vacation to the Florida Keys.  Find out more about this cafe at https://www.keylargo-cafelargo.com/.

After the running and crewing the Keys 100, it was time to explore and indulge at Blue Heaven in Key West.  Based on their review, I can’t wait to get there and try the dishes they describe in this episode.  Check out the menu here:  https://blueheavenkw.com/

DRINK

The 2023 Keys 100 has to be celebrated… all that running must make you thirsty, right?  Dean said burgers and beer were at the post-race site, where they cheered other runners in after finishing.  Dean, Judy, and Linda talk about both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options that are refreshing ways to celebrate at Blue Heaven.

THAT’S A WRAP!

Thanks to Dean, Judy, and Linda for sharing our FIRST-EVER Runcation Recap.  Congratulations on your accomplishment, too!!

If you have a race weekend the Runcation Nation needs to know about, email us at [email protected] and you could be featured on your own Runcation Recap!

RUN

On Saturday, We participated in the Inaugural Run with Meb!  It was a race at Al Lopez Park to benefit the MEB Foundation.  According to its website, “The MEB Foundation mission is to be a collaborator and leader in the areas of youth health, education, and fitness.”  Aimee’s father was a football coach for many years as an educator, so this purpose speaks to us as we have seen first-hand the positive impact sports can have as children and teenagers grow.  Sports can help them mature into productive, healthy young adults and teach many positive values.  We thank Meb for a great race weekend and talk about our strategies, the race, and the swag from the weekend.

EAT

Speaking of things we featured in our first episode, Coppertail Brewing Company in Tampa, Florida, was also on that list.  As we approach our 6th Anniversary, we thought visiting their taproom and seeing where all their tasty brews are made would be great.  Little did we know, there would be delicious bites, too!  We present our hot takes as we enjoyed some menu offerings you’ve gotta try.

DRINK

Coppertail Brewing Company has core beers we tried on our first few episodes about the Tampa Beer Run.  In this episode, we review flights of their featured beers.  What is the verdict?  Coppertail Brewing Company has some fantastic featured beer in their taproom.  So, if you come for Gasparilla Distance Classic or a vacation to the Tampa Bay Area, stop by and have a flight!

EAT

Hot Ones is a great show we found on YouTube.  Our executive producer, Josh Ozbirn, sent us this series of hot sauces to try on our annual Runcation Nation LIVE.  Thanks, Josh!

DRINK

What will relieve the heat from this challenge best?  Coffee?  Milk? Soda?  Ice Cream?  Sour Cream?  Beer? We put these to the test during this episode as we celebrate Cinco De Mayo and May the Fourth Be With You.

Throwback Tuesday: Replay of The Mebisode at the 2019 Gasparilla Distance Classic

8m · Published 25 Apr 23:09

As we prepare for the Run with Meb!, which is just two short weeks away, we thought we would flashback to Meb’s conversation about his book, 26 Marathons: What I Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career.

Run with Meb!  is coming up on May 6, 2023, in Tampa, Florida.  To find out more and register, visit: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Tampa/MEBFoundationRun.

Enjoy this flashback, and let us know if you have read his book.

At the 2019 Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend, yes, we ran a half marathon, but we also got to catch up with an exceptional guest...Meb Keflezighi!

He is the only man to win the New York City Marathon (2009), an Olympic Silver Medal (Athens 2004), and the Boston Marathon (2014).  We were so lucky to interview him before our race back in 2018 at Gasparilla. Liam, from Hawi Management,  arranged for us to have a few minutes with a very busy Meb Keflezighi to talk about his new book, 26 Marathons: What I Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career.  Thank you, Liam!

Meb is such a humble and genuine man.  He has gone through so much adversity and turned it into success.  He knows so much more than how to win, train for, and complete distance races.  He knows the importance of family and community.  He is dedicated to sharing his knowledge, and this latest book is one way he does that.  He supports other runners, no matter their level, and gives back to the sport endlessly.  He even told us about a couple of races he is involved in California that offer anyone a chance to accomplish, explore, and indulge.  I hope we get to do them soon!

We thank Meb for the precious time discussing these life lessons from the book and what he has on the horizon this year.  We know from our talk that this book is not just for runners but for anyone looking to be successful in the marathon of life.

THAT’S A WRAP

We have just returned from the 2023 Springtime Surprise Toy Story Ten-Miler in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World Resort.  Even though we did not participate in the challenge, these miles were challenging.  We discuss our experience at the Expo, pre-race rituals, pre-race party, the race itself, and the post-race celebration.

EAT and DRINK:  The 2023 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival

The Citrus Blossom is one of our favorites so far as we work our way around the 2023 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival.  We visited it on opening weekend of the festival, which runs through July this year!  We give you our hot takes as we sampled some Orange Bird-Inspired food and beer at this air-conditioned booth.

RunDisney races can be overwhelming for a first-time participant.  Today, we share tips for a magical race experience from our Runcation Nation!

EAT

Time for soup, salad, and sides at  Hollywood Brown Derby!   Hollywood Brown Derby is famous for its Cobb Salad.  Yes, we had that, but we also had incredible soup and sides.  We talked about them while we enjoyed them in the restaurant.  We share our reactions on the show this week with you.  (It makes us want to go back as soon as possible!)

DRINK

Hollywood Brown Derby has an extensive cocktail list.  We had the Derby cocktail and shared our thoughts as we sampled it for the first time during our meal.  You know how we love bourbon.  We also wanted to try the Grapefruit Cake Martini, too.  We had it from the drink stand outside later, and it was so good!!

CONGRATS TO ALL WHO RAN THE 2023 JEFF GALLOWAY HALF MARATHON WEEKEND SPRING EDITION

This past weekend, our coach held a brand new edition of a favorite:  The Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.  This is a spring edition that brought some of the same things we love along with a new theme for the 5K.  We wish we could have been there, but we became ill on the night before we were supposed to leave for the race.  We want to wish everyone a hearty congratulations who completed a race or challenge during this awesome weekend.  Shout out to Kevin Gwin who always puts together a great celebration for his Extra Mile Podcast crew, too!  2024, here we come!  We have to make up for lost time on that course and with our coach!

EAT and DRINK:  ATLANTA FAVORITES

Atlanta, like Jacksonville and Tampa in Florida, Atlanta is absolutely full of tasty food and beverage options for celebrating your accomplishments at Jeff Galloway’s race weekend.  We look back at a few of our favorites from previous episodes since we were unable to go this year.  There are some tasty options including:

Wrecking Bar BrewPub (Episode 17)

Trader Vic’s and Orpheus Brewing (Episode 46)

Highlander and Scofflaw Brewing (Episode 92)

The Flying Biscuit (Episode 195)

No. 246 (Episode 196)

RUN WITH MEB!  Benefiting the MEB Foundation

It is true, we just completed a fun race weekend with the Runcation Nation at the Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa, but we have to talk about Dana’s hometown for one more week on the show because this week, we are lucky enough to chat with Meb Keflezighi about his inaugural race coming up in May, the Run with Meb!  Benefiting the MEB Foundation.  This event features a 1-mile, 5K, and 10K offering, both in-person in Tampa and Virtual.  Meb told us all about it.  Thank you, Meb, for putting it together and taking the time to talk with us about this first annual event.  We can’t wait to run it with you. Or, more accurately, at the back of your pack in Al Lopez Park in May!  Save us a high five at the finish!

EAT & DRINK

Wood Fired is a pizza and wine bar near the University of South Florida in Tampa.  It is a small and quaint place that is huge in flavor!  We had salads, appetizers, and pizza that were so flavorful!  We recommend this place if you are scouting colleges or heading to Busch Gardens in Tampa.   In addition, there are local craft beers on tap and a wide range of wines on the menu, from less expensive to higher-end choices.  We went with a glass of house wine, and it was delicious.

Thanks to all our patrons and everyone in the Runcation Nation for your support and encouragement.  Because of you, we have been able to keep the show going over the last two years, and now that the races are returning, we look forward to meeting up with you, too!

Congratulations to Marathoner Nicole Kay from the Cape Coral Running Group on completing her first-ever MARATHON!

Congratulations to all who ran the 2023 Gasparilla Distance Classic this past weekend!  It meant so much to run with Jessica, JoJo, Darlene, Susie, Christy, Greg, Dawn, and so many others that we did not get a chance to run into, like Laurie.  Patron of the show, Dean Gerber, got a PR in the half marathon distance, as did his wife Judy in the 8K.  To have Fitz announce this race and be a part of the weekend with us made it an incredible start and finish line feeling, too!

Congratulations to all who ran the 2023 Princess Half Marathon Weekend.  We saw so many on social media who posted medal pictures and footage from the Runcation Nation, so to everyone there, congratulations on running and cheering.

Patron Meg Brower crossed that post-surgery finish line at the Princess 10K in Orlando.

Congratulations to one of our favorite local breweries, Fort Myers Brewing Company, who started the craft beer movement here in Lee County, Florida.  Happy ten years, @fmbrew!  Here’s to many more!  Cheers!

If you want a shoutout for you or someone you love on the show,  email us at [email protected] or call us and leave a message at 941-677-2733.
