Substrata Podcast

by Greg Holden Regan

Subtrata Podcast is about going into the simple and getting down to the depths of creativity. These low key art lessons are partly a look into my life and journey as an artist, and partly a window into my process of making art. I chose the audio format for these lessons to help keep the listener’s imagination from being influenced by what I am creating during the podcast, while still giving the feeling that we are making art together. I want the listener to know that creating art comes from the substrata and that I don’t hold the key, but they do. The artist should have fun, be brave and try new things - try to reach as deep into the imagination and creativity as possible .

self-doubt /ˈˌself ˈdout/ and Confidence

0s · Published 01 Feb 21:53

Watercolor Here We Go / Episode 10

0s · Published 07 Jul 19:45

For our 10th episode of Substrata Podcast I wanted to try and tackle the unforgiving medium of watercolor. I was not disappointed with how difficult they can be to use, because there is not turning back or erasing if you make a mistake. Watercolors are at the same time very user friendly in that all you need is a cup of water a brush and some paper. Use a pen or a pencil for fine lines, make sure your colors are wiped clean before using them, and use the white of the paper as the white in your painting. Good luck and enjoy!

Cooking is Kind of Like Painting /Episode 9

For this episode I give cooking a try, looking to find similarities between cooking and painting. I made a curry simmer sauce dish with store bought simmer sauce.

Substrata Podcast / Episode 5 / Draw Your Favorite Canned Beverage

0s · Published 12 May 22:46

Draw your favorite canned beverage for this episode of Substrata Podcast. Take about 10 minutes for this exercise and change the brand name of your drink, try to be clever and creative with the name. I’m not sure if I succeeded with being clever for mine but, it made me laugh a little. I changed the brand name to Tasty Street and the flavor to Greatfruit. Save your can for next week’s episode because I will ask you to crush the can and then make another drawing of it . Have fun! The supplies for this episode is a pencil and a piece of paper.

I have Dyslexia :)

0s · Published 05 May 17:02

This episode is about me growing up with dyslexia and how it has molded me in good and bad ways. I talk a little about how it affects my speech pattern and how that is on of my "whys" for doing this podcast. Maybe you can relate to this episode weather you have dyslexia or not.

Episode 3 / Getting Used to Pastels

0s · Published 28 Apr 00:14

Episode 2 / Pastel Drawing Lesson / California Poppy

0s · Published 16 Apr 23:27

Grab some pastels from the closet and find a flower in your yard to draw. In this episode I draw a California Poppy from my backyard using some cheap dry pastels I had in my studio. Take a good look at your flower and notice all the different colors that you see when you take a minute or two and just look. Key notes from the episode: Use dark colors to make a black for the shadows and start light to dark. Get your composition started with a pencil if you like and once again keep the drawing under 15 to 20 minutes. Have a great time and don't worry about making anything that is refrigerator material.
