Thomas Hardy - “Hap”

1m · Published 22 May 07:56
This episode starts off a series of poems by Thomas Hardy. The poem ‘Hap’ explores the ambiguity of life and chance, asking whether his sufferings are by chance or due to a Divine plan. His faithlessness stands out in many of his poems. In this poem, however, he states that he would be at ease if it was in fact a god that caused his suffering, he might be able to accept it; - “half-eased in that a Powerfuller than I // Had willed and meted (given) me the tears I shed.” Enjoy!
