Oryx and Crake (pt. 2)

1h 14m · Published 21 Dec 23:41

Final episode before the season finale! Did the pandemic make us numb to the dystopia that is Oryx and Crake? Was the shadow children series actually the greatest YA series of all time? Is Jimmy just a piece of shit? You've got questions, we've got answers. Thanks for riding this ride with us this year. We're back next episode with a book giveaway so stay tuned if you want a chance to win a copy of any of the books we read in Season 2. Oryx and Crake (pt. 1)

1h 9m · Published 25 Nov 18:07

It's the last book of Season 2!! Oryx and Crake finishing off our quarantine season is pretty fitting in the worst of ways. We dive into this dystopian novel that has an uncomfortable amount of similarities to 2020. Halfway through we're trying to work through the quote on the front of our copies saying that Atwood does Orwell one better(?). We still have half the book to go to find out. Two more episodes to go before we close out this year for good. You can comment on a "video" version of this podcast on Brian's Book Bastion on YouTube.

The Master and Margarita (pt. 2)

1h 10m · Published 01 Nov 23:25

With two days to go before Halloween, we got in our last episode on The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. We got an underworld ball, witchy transformations, and continued hijinx from a boisterous black cat. What's more Halloween than this piece of Soviet criticism? Join us for the fun on our look at the back half of this fantastic tale.

The Master and Margarita (pt. 1)

1h 12m · Published 20 Oct 15:41

The devil went down to Moscow, and we are HERE for it. On this October episode we're looking at the first half of the Russian classic "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov. We kick things off with some thematic drinks (read: vod on the pod) and dive into to this surreal story. How well do we know the Bible? Why is Satan in Moscow of all places? What's the Master's story? Jump in and join us for our latest discussion.

Omensetter's Luck (pt. 2)

1h 12m · Published 14 Oct 00:20

Today's episode is all Furber, and from what we saw last time, we're in for one wild ride. We put on our detective caps to debate on what happened to Henry Pimber, and hit a few different scats along the way. We're back next episode with the second to last book of Season 2. 1h 14m · Published 10 Sep 21:28

After an unplanned summer break, Beer Time with Books is BACK with the OG three talking about our 5th book of season 2: Omensetter's Luck by William H. Gass. We talk about the legitimacy of luck, the sexual tension of the 1890s, and one wild reverend. Stay tuned for part two in our next episode.

Steppenwolf (pt. 2)

1h 12m · Published 16 Jun 22:02

Brian's brother-in-law is back for another round of discussions around Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. Things were a little more "verb-y" this time around, and definitely brought some crazy vibes to the back half. We discuss if we think the magic theater scene was a drug-induced haze, or if there's just some magic in the air. Keep it real out there in this crazy world, and remember to laugh along the way... Steppenwolf (pt. 1)

1h 4m · Published 31 May 20:15

We're back with a NEW GUEST. Brian's brother-in-law Corey joins us for our fourth book of season two, Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse, to get a little existential, explore the many dichotomies found in this novel, and get into a light but potentially significant connection to Harry Potter? Join us! You can comment on a "video" version of this podcast on Brian's Book Bastion on YouTube.

Rabbit, Run (pt. 2)

1h 9m · Published 12 May 16:37

We finished up the second half of Rabbit, Run for our 4th quarantine episode and this book went in directions none of us were expecting... We debate what Updike was actually trying to criticize, break down the portrayal of women in this novel, and talk about if we are interested in the rest of the Rabbit series. Buckle in!
