God is good. He is loving and kind, and wants the best for you. God is good. His intentions are good. His plans are good. His designs and expectations are good. His ways are good. His Kingdom is good. He is good. And he is a Shepherd. He will care for you. He will protect you. He will lead you to safety. He will bring you to good pastures. He will water you and refresh you. He will fight for you, even when you are unaware. He knows your name, and will go any distance climb any mountain, cross any valley, and face any foe to find you and bring you home.

Luke 24:35-48 The way we encounter the physical body of Jesus is through the bread and wine. This is why the Eucharist is central. And when we encounter this physical body, we know him through the power of the Holy Spirit. And then something really interesting happens in this reading. And this happens twice in the twenty-fourth chapter of Luke. It happens in the house in Emmaus, and here in the upper room: He opened up their minds to understand the scriptures.

The foundation of the Kingdom of God

is the Incarnation.

And this is expressed to us through the sacramental principle:

God uses physical objects, and other human beings

to convey his Person, Presence, and Power.

People love theology,

and we could talk about theology all night,

but nobody cares.

Nobody cares about the theology of the resurrection.

Nobody cares about the substitutionary atonement.

Nobody cares about all the meaning

and layers

in this Passover Vigil.

Because,

at the end of the day,

we are all like Mary

at the tomb.

We weep.

We are alone.

We are disappointed and lost.

And we hear a familiar voice behind us.

“Woman, why are you weeping?”

And Jesus

shows us his hands and his feet

and his side

and says,

See.

I did all this for love.

This tree that was the source of death, the sign of ultimate suffering, the tree of injustice and accusation, the tree of cursing, and abandonment, of nakedness and shame, and the tree of bitterness, This tree in the garden: the tree of the knowledge of good and of evil, has now become a tree of life. Blessed is the wood that brings righteousness.

Jesus spent his whole life pointing toward this event.

This was what he longed to do, establish a new covenant with us. Give us this bread of the new covenant, where God lives in us by the Holy Spirit and does the work through us so that we can do more than real things in this earth. We are not mentally remembering Jesus, we are reconnecting to the covenant and all it's promises: God is in us, and physically we are taking Jesus into us. And when we take Jesus into us, Jesus in us by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to love. And in that place, we can ask anything in his name and our Father will get the glory.

We forget our story,

and we forget who we are,

and where we came from.

This story,

if you are a Christian

is your story.

This story is your identity

and this story is where you belong.

And this story makes one thing clear:

you matter to God,

because,

as St. Augustine said,

if you were the only person on planet earth

needing redemption

our Lord Jesus Christ

would still go to the cross.

He loves you that much.
