Y2K Take 2. Bonus episode 4. Olivia. Madagascar. July 2023.

Scene B1:1

OLIVIA

...and that’s it I suppose. (slightly sad smile) My final episode from Madagascar. (clears throat) I’ve had some listener questions, mostly about what will happen to the podcast now that I’ll be moving again. (smiles) Don’t worry, podcasting is practically part of my DNA after all these years. I’ll continue the Y2K23 podcast wherever I go, and Tammi and Becca will keep guesting when they can. However, if you’ve been listening to the Adalatherium podcast you know that we are handing it over to the new group of interns, and I for one will definitely be listening to hear all about their discoveries. This... It’s hard to believe this internship has only been ten months. It’s been... everything I could have hoped for. I have learnt so much. (slight laugh) Not just about fieldwork and excavation, but specifically about late Cretaceous vertebrate animals, all of which is fascinating - I feel like my mind has expanded to five times its size! (beat, more serious) And my heart, too... Being here, working here, living here, making friends... It’s been... feels trite to say, but... It changed me. Changed my perspective, mostly on myself, I think. I was talking to one of my newer friends the other day, and saying how much I would miss Madagascar, and all my friends here, when I leave. She asked if I was going home. And I... I didn’t know what to say. What is home, for me? Most people have an easy answer to that, but me? Is it Birmingham? I only lived there for three years. Ireland? Since mum moved I don’t really have a connection anymore. Brighton, maybe? Grew up there, but don’t really have any ties left there either... And I’ve still never been to Canada... Suppose I should put Edmonton on my list of places to visit, but home? No. I suppose the... fleetingness of all this is one reason my parents’ divorce hit me so hard. I don’t know if I will ever feel completely at home anywhere. (small smile) On the other hand, I can feel nearly at home in many places... It’s as though I have little pieces of home all over the world. Suppose that makes me lucky. (lets out breath) And so - all of this rambling is leading somewhere, I swear! – I don’t know if I am going home. But as I told my friend I am going somewhere that, for me, feels more like home than anywhere else. (big smile) It is finally settled. (deep breath) I’m going back to New Zealand. Back to Auckland. I’ve really missed living there. I have another internship lined up starting in August, and hopefully I can go back to uni and work toward a PhD sometime within the next few years. Of course it doesn’t hurt that both my parents are there now... As well as aunt Bri [Bree] and uncle Antonio. (quickly)  Though, no, my parents aren’t back together! (smile) I could feel you starting to write that question, listeners... I’ve stopped hoping for that. Well. Mostly stopped. At this point I’m just happy they are friends, and are able to be there for each other. I am looking forward to spending time with both of them, and all of my other relatives and friends... (lighter) But before all of that I’ll be hanging out with Tammi and Becca in Paris - for two whole weeks! Yes! I am so excited! So you can expect at least one podcast episode with the three of us talking over each other and laughing a lot, maybe we’ll get some of Tammi’s old friends to join us too... (deep breath) Right. I really have to go now. Thank you so much for listening. And... (smiles) Kia ora!

Bonus 3: Drama School Director

Scene B3:0

(INTRO MUSIC)

NARRATOR

Y2K Take 2. Bonus episode 3. Radio interview with (beep) from (long beep), a drama school in London. May 2015.

Scene B3:1

(EXT. Daytime. Quiet city street. The DIRECTOR is being interviewed.)

DIRECTOR

Ahh… Sorry - who? Ina… Ina Fischer? Oh, yeah, I remember her. Called herself something else in those days, what was it now... Tip of my tongue... (beat) Nope. Flew away. Must have been, what... Seven or eight years ago? More?... What was that? (surprised) Fifteen? Well. Time sure does fly, doesn’t it? Must have been having fun. Eh, you know, many students passing through the school since then. I can’t… Can’t keep track of them all, now can I? Always good when they go on to make some noise in the world, though, in one way or another. Not all of ‘em in acting, mind you, a lot of ‘em in completely different fields. Writers and directors, and TV presenters... That sort of thing. (thinks) Actually I’ve had lots of famous students actually. Weren’t famous when they were students, o’course. Most of them. Actually I did teach a child star once, they were awful. Thought they were the center of the universe... What was that? (snort) Oh I won’t tell you their name, that’d be all over the tabloids in a hot minute. Hm? Nah. Keeping some secrets. Ina, though, nothing bad to say about her. She never could shake that accent, but, yeah, turns out she did all right anyway, didn’t she? These days, everyone wants authenticity, don’t they?(emphasis) Natural accents. Bit of a bummer for someone like me, you know, I mean (changes accent)I’ve got my Christian Slater voice I can, you know, put on, (changes accent) and, like, ah got mah Southern Belle (changes accent) and my New York, but nobody seems to want that anymore (changes accent) and, you know, like, I’ve got Scottish coming out of all sorts of places, my Sean Connery, I could do a female version of that (changes back to own accent) But yeah, not as much- Not as much demand for accents anymore- What was that? Right. Ina Fischer, yeah. Practically a movie star, yes? Well, good on her! Not everyone does as well as that, do they? Most of ‘em just go ‘round endless auditions and starve, y’know? S’a tough life, acting truly. Still. It’s the best fun in the world. I love it. Nothing like it. Do you know, once I played the Mona Lisa in this kind of punk rock installation in one of the royal palaces, we ripped up- you know we made it rain fish, and I was there in this beautiful gown with, you know like, like Jason’s technicolour dreamcoat but just gold, with blood all over it, and ah, the atmosphere, you could cut it with a knife… And we did. We basically just cut most things. With a knife. But- You know art is so beautiful and, all the challenges I’ve had, you know, as an actor, I- What? Ina. No. No dirt on her. (laughs) Not that I’d tell you if there were! Can’t go ‘round talking about people to the press, that’d be rude. Sorry to disappoint. (footsteps start walking away) Wait! (calls) Where are you- (calls louder) I remember now! Kat! Called herself Kat!

(running after reporter, calling, out of breath) Wait! So unfit… Ina Fischer! Called herself- (reporter has stopped, DIRECTOR stops, lets out breath) Ah. Kat. (smiles) Gotcha! Haven’t told you about my play yet! It’s all about the inequality of time, and as you grow older, time goes faster, and as you’re young it’s all about grabbing life by the testes and just squeezing- No. it is not. I didn’t mean that! I mean, it’s about the hierarchy of the patriarchy with the matriarchy and are we existing now or are we living in our own tomorrow with yesterday’s dreams? You know? And we’re going to perform it all in monster trucks, in Peterborough, in England...

NARRATOR

Please note that this episodes features strong language and references to abuse and self harm.

(INTRO MUSIC)

NARRATOR

Y2K Take 2. Bonus episode 2. Selected LiveJournal entries written by Katarina Fischer from 2000 to 2002.

Scene B2:1

NARRATOR

February, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

I keep thinking about J. It is rare for me to be so attracted to someone. And yet a relationship between us would not be a good idea. He would try to dominate and I would alternate between stubbornly dominating back and sulkily surrendering. We’d have huge, unpleasant arguments and I’d end up witha crushed sense of self-worth. Not good. (sighs) He really is a lovely generous person but his ego is enormous.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:2

NARRATOR

March, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

...and then he said something patronizing and condescending and I left rather than snapping. On the bus on the way home I thought about what kind of person he is. He is intelligent, generous, social and popular... But he’s also self-centered, and he has no social antennae. Doesn’t pay enough attention to other people to develop any. And it really bothers me that he keeps saying I’m so... bad. I don’t quite know what he is picking up on, but it’s not a response I’ve had before. (beat) I stand up to him. Maybe he’s not used to that. (thinks) And he puts down my taste in music and plays and everything. Proclaiming his taste superior in every way. He is so annoying!

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:3

NARRATOR

July, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(has cried for days and has no tears left) Oh fuck. I can’t... I can’t write about this. I mean, what would I say? It happened. It is over. The dream is in pieces, shattered all over the floor. Can I pick the pieces up and put them back together? (beat) I don’t know. Feel like I’ll never be whole again. (beat) J is... He tries. And I’m sure he mourns, too, in his way. But still. It’s like the grief is all mine, it was my body that failed, and I... I want to punish it. I want to punish my useless body and I don’t know how. Everyone keeps telling me to eat, and rest, and take care of myself... I don’t want to do any of that. I don’t *deserve* any of that. My body failed me, failed my (voice breaks) child, and I hate it.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:4

NARRATOR

August, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

I always used to say if anyone ever uses physical violence against me, I am gone. Leaving. I cannot let anyone do that to me. Ever. I wanted to hold onto that, but... (long pause) Then it got all muddled. He’s promised never to do it again. And I hit him, too, a while back. Didn’t mean to, of course. But the fact remains. I did hit him. (beat) And he forgave me. So I owe it to him to forgive him too. (sigh) Working on that.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:5

NARRATOR

November, 2000.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(very tired and disconnected, slowly)

I thought

My thoughts

Were mine alone

Turns out

I thought

All wrong

(deep sigh)

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:6

NARRATOR

January, 2001.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(very, very sad) I want myself back. Whole. (beat) I feel broken. He hacked and carved in me to shape me to his liking and the blood is still seeping. It pools around my feet along with the unwanted parts of me that he chopped off. How am I supposed to put myself together again? (beat) So helpless. So mutilated.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:7

NARRATOR

February, 2001.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(like she’s about to throw something, or punch someone) Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Why do I care that he’s found someone else? I hate him. (long pause, sighs, calmer) And that’s the explanation I suppose. I am not yet indifferent toward him. He still has power over me. Power he does not deserve. That I do not want to give him. Power that he took a year ago and hasn’t given back. (beat) He had no respect for me. Who and what I was did not matter. I was to be squeezed into his perfect girlfriend mold and be happy about it. (beat, more forceful) I feel like I should warn her. That I should have branded his forehead for all to see. With a scarlet letter A for Abuser... (lets out breath) But I don’t know how. She probably wouldn’t listen. (beat) Someone tried to pass on a warning from his ex, after all, and I didn’t listen. Hell, his ex tried to warn me herself, in a way, and I was completely oblivious. (beat) I want to save her but... I don’t know how.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:8

NARRATOR

April, 2001.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

Kazakhstan is beautiful. The landscape... There are no words. Been here a month now and am slowly feeling like I am getting the hang of things. The first few weeks were a blur. Constant stream of new people and new challenges. (small snort) And so many hours on horseback. I just fell into bed every night. No time to think. Didn’t even dream, at least not that I remember. I think... It’s been good. Going far away. No chance of accidentally meeting J and his new girlfriend somewhere. Ugh. The ‘new girlfriend’ part still hurts. How could he move on so quickly? He said I was ‘the best girlfriend he’d ever had’. That what we had was special. (beat) I suppose this is a question that answers itself. It wasn’t special. (beat) *I* wasn’t special. I was replaceable. Easily replaceable. And that still hurts. A lot. But being here helps. And the work... I don’t know if I will ever get a chance like this again, but the work is (awed) exhilarating. I am giving it everything I have. And I hope that is enough so that I get to do it again. Because, this? It is everything I ever wanted.

(‘enter’ key sound)

Scene B2:9

NARRATOR

April, 2002.

(Typing on 00s laptop, fades out after about two words)

KATARINA

(smiles) Been so long since I wrote anything here. Probably no-one reads it, anyway. (slight laugh) They might, if they connected it to my... work, I suppose. But I’ve made sure to erase all connections. (beat) I found out today that J’s latest girlfriend dumped him. (smiles) E told me, apparently she ran into them down the pub the other week. And E decided to call him out for his behavior toward me. I wish I could have been there! I am sure she was magnificent. (beat) The new girl overheard some of E:s rant and seems to have had second thoughts. I am so glad she got away, and I will just admit that I am (beat) happy he was hurt and humiliated. I may be mostly over him, but what he did to me... It was not OK. I am still not fully healed. Maybe I never will be. And while I hope he learns from this, and changes his behavior, I don’t think he will. Don’t think he can. So I will continue to quietly celebrate when I hear of another girl escaping his clutches. Another girl surviving. Maybe we should all form a secret society. The I-survived-J-club. (small laugh) This latest girl can be president. I admire her... (small sigh) <

(INTRO MUSIC)

NARRATOR

Y2K Take 2. Bonus episode 1. Voicemails from Jessica Shaw to Katarina Fischer in 2001.

Scene B1:1

(Modem, clicks)

JESS

(softly) Kat! (shakes head) I mean, Ina... I am trying! Promise... Sorry it’s been a while. Still in new-baby-shock-mode. Yeah. Rachel and Liv fell asleep a little while ago, and I should probably catch some too, but you know me. No good at sleeping in the day... Plus I *should* get some writing done. (sighs) Not sure how. My brain is mush. I had all these plans... (snort) I was going to start a novel. I’ve had this idea percolating for a while, and it feels like the story needs to be in novel form. (stifles a yawn) I’ll tell you about it when I’m less tired. (smiles) If that ever happens. How much time could one tiny baby really need from two parents, right? I was... (smiles) extremely foolish. Turns out: *all* of the time. One hundred percent. More, if she could. (sheepish) I start part-time at the library next week, and I’m almost... looking forward to it? To be somewhere else and do something with other adults and not be in this constant baby fog... I’ll miss them both, of course, and still won’t get any sleep, but maybe I can- (baby starts crying in other room, JESS lets out breath, quickly) Have to run – love you!

(clicks)

Scene B1:2

(Modem, clicks)

JESS

Kat! Ina! Sorry! Hi. I’m working. It’s good. I like the library. Weird not to be home though. And I MISS them. But also: Talking to other adults about things that have nothing to do with babies? Bliss. In fact, so blissful that I feel guilty. Rachel doesn’t get to do that. We joined this mummy-baby-group-thing and went together the first few times but guess what everyone’s talking about? Yeah. Babies... And sleep deprivation. And nipple pads and cloth diapers – sorry – nappies! – and baby swim classes and baby yoga. It’s this whole new weird world. Honestly I’m impressed if we manage to get the three of us dressed and out of the apartment in anything resembling a reasonable time for doctor’s appointments and the baby group – can’t really imagine trying to fit in baby yoga... How are you? I tried to listen to your latest voicemail this morning but I only had a minute at a time so it was a bit disjointed. So glad the shoot is exciting, though, I- (baby starts crying in other room, JESS lets out breath, quickly) Sorry! Oceans!

(clicks)

Scene B1:3

(Modem, clicks)

JESS

(baby is whining in other room) Ina! Kat! No – got it right! This is not a message. It’s a placeholder. Liv will not stop crying and we don’t know what to do. At some point, I will be able to finish sentences again. Complete thoughts. Wish I knew when. Oh Kat, I’m so tired. Have to get back to Liv and Rachel. Am sending Rachel over to Bree’s to get some sleep. I love you.

(clicks)

Scene B1:4

(Modem, clicks)

JESS

(exhausted, almost whispering) Ina! Dearest Ina, so sorry about the radio silence. It’s been... These past few weeks... We do everything they tell us to but it’s not enough. Liv has colic. Because, of course that’s what it is. Even in our muddled states we should have realized. It will pass, they say. Sometime. (sighs) My dear, I think we have to give up on voicemails for a while. Much as I love hearing your voice, I either am so tired I can’t focus or Liv is screaming, poor thing. I’ll write you, instead. At least with e-mails I can stop and start as many times as I need. I am so excited about your movie and everything wonderful happening in your life, and I really want to know what is going on, but I can’t handle voicemails right now. Sending you oceans and oceans of hugs. (beginning of baby cry, cut off)

Bonus episode 4: Tammi’s Takeover

(INTRO MUSIC)

Scene B4:1

TAMMI

Hello and welcome to Tammi’s Takeover – our exclusive show for you wonderful Patreon supporters of Y2K! My name is Tammi, and here with me is Olivia...

OLIVIA

(sounds as if she’s on phone all through episode) Hello! (smiles) Though in reality, we are just finishing our conversation from the final episode.

TAMMI

That’s right. Only, now I’m in charge! (evil laughter)

OLIVIA

(laughs) All right. So what are we doing?

TAMMI

Well, this is our very last episode. And you’ve talked a little about this, but... Has it been like you expected? This podcasting business?

OLIVIA

Yeah, no. Not at all. Think I’ve said before that I didn’t expect very much. I didn’t really do this to communicate with the listeners, and yet that has been the most brilliant part of it.

TAMMI

In what way?

OLIVIA

Just... Getting people’s reactions to things. Listeners getting invested in my life, and in what I say... Also thanks to the podcast, I feel like I understand my parents better. It’s hard to stay really angry when you sympathize, you know? And I’ve got in touch with Mike, that would have never happened without the podcast, and without the help of listeners.

TAMMI

Yeah, that is pretty cool. I wanted to ask you about that actually – what kind of contact do you see yourself having with Mike in the future?

OLIVIA

We’ve sent some e-mails back and forth since we were there. I like him. And I like Scott too. But, you know, time will tell. I guess I wanted Mike to be the answer to all my problems (slight laugh) and he can’t be that. Of course he can’t. Also now everything’s out in the open with my parents and I don’t really feel that need anymore. Maybe we can visit Mike and Scott again when we fly back from Auckland in July?

TAMMI

Yeah! And maybe stay a few days and see some more of Melbourne?

OLIVIA

That would be great. So, yeah. I don’t know what we’ll be to each other. He’s definitely not my dad!

TAMMI

Nope, that’s pretty clear.

OLIVIA

Right. I have a final recording to play, you want to do that now?

TAMMI

Yes! Tell us about it.

OLIVIA

So I believe this is their final production. They were doing Sophocles’ Antigone. Do you know the story?

TAMMI

Only very vaguely.

OLIVIA

The drama school director explains it pretty well in the recording, but it’s a Greek tragedy about Antigone (an-TIG-uh-nee), played by Kat, who wants to rebel against the king, and in this scene she is telling her sister Ismene (is-MAY-nee), played by Jess, about what she wants to do.

TAMMI

OK. Sounds complicated.

OLIVIA

We should just listen, it makes pretty good sense.

TAMMI

All right, here we go.

Scene B4:2

(dramatic music)

DIRECTOR

You sit there, Jess, and Kat, you’re coming in from stage left... (Rustle of scripts) Good. Whenever you’re ready.

KAT (as ANTIGONE)

(stiff, trying to do RP)

Now you know, and you’ll quickly demonstrate

whether you are nobly born, or else

a girl unworthy of her splendid ancestors.

 JESS (as ISMENE)

(stiff, trying to do RP)

O my poor sister, if that’s what’s happening,

what can I say that would be any help

to ease the situation or resolve it?

DIRECTOR

Right, stop there, please. You’re both getting stuck on the accent and forgetting the story. Let’s just work out... What is going on in this scene?

KAT

Um, Antigone (an-TIG-uh-nee) wants to bury her brother.

JESS

And she wants Ismene (is-MAY-nee) to help.

DIRECTOR

And what are they to each other?

KAT

Sisters.

DIRECTOR

Yes – and, at this point, well, they only have each other. Their parents are dead, their brothers have just killed each other, they are shocked and scared and in a very tenuous position. Their uncle is now king, and, well, they don’t know what will happen to them. And right here, right now, Antigone suggests something that is completely unthinkable to Ismene. You see, this...   This is that scene. So, y’know, stop worrying about the accents and get the emotions right.

JESS

Still want me to do a British accent?

DIRECTOR

Yes – but don’t worry about it too much. Y’know, an accent, you can tell when it’s shite, right? (laughs)

JESS

All right.

DIRECTOR

Right. (claps hands) From the top. Whenever you’re ready. Impress me. (under breath) Emotion – emotion – emotion...

(Rustle of scripts)

KAT (as ANTIGONE)

Now you know, and you’ll quickly demonstrate

whether you are nobly born, or else

a girl unworthy of her splendid ancestors.

 JESS (as ISMENE)

O my poor sister, if that’s what’s happening,

what can I say that would be any help

to ease the situation or resolve it?

KAT (as ANTIGONE)

Think whether you will work with me in this

and act together.

JESS (as ISMENE)

In what kind of work?

What do you mean?

KAT (as ANTIGONE)

Will you help these hands

take up (struggles to pronounce the name) Polyneices’...

DIRECTOR

Polyneices – Polyneices, poly-whatever-his-name-is... Right, OK, good. Now. We can stop there. Better. Kat, before next rehearsal I want you to work a bit on the accent – doesn’t have to be perfect, but get rid of as much of your own accent as you possibly can.

KAT

OK.

DIRECTOR

Great. Don’t worry about it now, though. (thinks) You’re both a bit stuck, aren’t you... We need to do something to get those jaws unclenched... Got it! Kat, go stand in that corner. Go go go go!

KAT

O-K. (footsteps)

DIRECTOR

And Jess, you go in that corner. Quick quick quick, choppy-choppy, hoppy-hoppy, good, right...

JESS

Right. (footsteps, distant, calls) Hi Kat!

KAT

(distant, calls) Hello Jess!

DIRECTOR

Now, don’t worry about the accents, don’t worry about the emotions, just make sure the other can hear you clearly, right?

JESS

So... you mean we should yell?

DIRECTOR

No, more like, project your voice all the way across the room so your message will be heard.

JESS

Yeah.

DIRECTOR

Right. Now I only want you to use those first lines - “Now you know...” Kat and “O my poor sister..” Jess, and y’know, just,

really throw them across the room, over and over.

KAT

Both at the same time?

DIRECTOR

Yes. All right. Ready?

KAT and JESS

Yes!

DIRECTOR

Go!

KAT (as ANTIGONE)

(same time as JESS, calling over and over)

Now you know, and you’ll quickly demonstrate

whether you are nobly born, or else

a girl unworthy of her splendid ancestors.

 JESS (as ISMENE)

(same time as KAT, calling over and over)

O my poor sister, if that’s what’s happening

TRANSCRIPTTammi's Takeover - Patreon Bonus Episode 3: A *little* uncomfortable

(INTRO MUSIC)

Scene B3:1

TAMMI

Hello and welcome to Tammi’s Takeover – our extra-special show exclusive to Patreon supporters of Y2K! My name is Tammi, and here’s also Olivia...

OLIVIA

Yes, hello!

TAMMI

So, today we are going to be looking at some of the things that have been happening in the podcast so far. I’ll be playing some clips, and you can tell us a little bit about your thoughts and reactions. All right?

OLIVIA

Oh! All right. That makes me a little nervous.

TAMMI

You’ll be fine. You ready for the first clip?

OLIVIA

(jokingly) No..?

TAMMI

(laughs) I’m playing it anyway! (OLIVIA laughs)

(Clip from episode 3)

OLIVIA

All right. That was pretty emotional. You know, I thought there would be only my Mum and her friend on these files, but other people seem to creep in as well. I haven’t decided yet if I like that or not. Will let you know.

TAMMI

I was listening through the early episodes, and I think this, from episode three, is where you really seemed to grasp the fact that this was not just going to be about Kat and Jess.

OLIVIA

Yeah. That was strange, listening back... I thought it would be pretty mundane, you know. Just two people telling each other their minor daily happenings...

TAMMI

That’s not how it ended up at all!

OLIVIA

No! So many other people turned up in the voicemails, and so many things started happening.

TAMMI

Yes – their lives were certainly eventful. But your life’s been pretty eventful too.

OLIVIA

And yours! We both moved to Auckland after all... And... In the beginning I thought the podcast wouldn’t be about me at all. I would just be the objective narrator of it all, not sharing anything significant about my life.

TAMMI

(smiles) That didn’t really work, did it?

OLIVIA

No! And I think it has to do with the voicemails, somehow, they were so personal and dramatic and everything that I couldn’t stay distanced.

TAMMI

Makes sense. And that sort of leads us to the second clip, from episode twelve:

(Clip from episode 12)

OLIVIA

In a way it’s like they are characters to me at this point. Even though I know they were actual people and of course still are actual people now, twenty years later, this world of theirs, at this time... it’s all *very* different from the people I know. We’re more the same age, and they seem much easier to relate to. I suppose... I always thought of my parents as... not old... but static. Like I’m the kid so I am doing all this growing and changing and they are done with all that. But lately they... are changing things, and changing (hesitates) as people and doing things they never used to do and... well, it freaks me out. They’re supposed to be stable, dammit! (sigh) I know that’s not fair. Or reasonable. (small laugh) But maybe listening to all these voicemails and hearing my mum as a younger, less sure and... unformed version of herself is helping me understand her a little better now as well.

TAMMI

It seems the voicemails have affected how you, like, relate to your parents in the present, as well.

OLIVIA

They did. (sighs) Suppose it’s all a part of growing up, seeing your parents as people rather than... well, parents. And it *has* been helpful. And sometimes really beautiful. But it’s also been hard hearing them so happy in the voicemails when they are... not happy together in the now.

TAMMI

Yes. That must be very disorienting.

OLIVIA

It is! And in a way it is wonderful to have heard them from the time they fell in love, but in another way it is also... painful, yes, and... it makes me question their love then, you know? Knowing it doesn’t last?

TAMMI

Yeah. Twenty years is quite a long time for it to last, though.

OLIVIA

Yes. It is. I know.

TAMMI

So what did you expect to learn from the voicemails?

OLIVIA

At the beginning, nothing really. I didn’t think about it properly, I just thought it would be a fun way to look into the past.

TAMMI

But you were looking for clues about Mike from the start, right?

OLIVIA

I was. But I never thought that the podcast listeners would actually be able to help with that. I hoped they would, of course, but I didn’t believe it.

TAMMI

On that note, here’s our last clip for today:

(Clip from episode 32)

OLIVIA

(emotional but tries to hide it) What did... what did Mike look like?

CASSANDRA

(smiles) Oh, he was a looker! Brown hair, dimples, great smile! (beat, just realizes this) You look a little like him you know.

OLIVIA

(excited and a little embarassed) Oh. Wow. (beat) I only have one dimple, though.

TAMMI

So that was pretty recent – episode 32.

OLIVIA

Wow. Yeah. That was... To hear that I looked like him was... yeah.

TAMMI

Does it feel like you will find him now?

OLIVIA

I don’t know. Trying not to get my hopes up. But Cassie has definitely made me feel like it’s possible.

TAMMI

Yes. I think so too. What would you like to say to him?

OLIVIA

So many things! But it’s more... There are so many things I want to know.

TAMMI

You should start writing all the questions down so you have them ready to go.

OLIVIA

Yeah. That’s a good idea.

TAMMI

So how do you feel after listening to all these clips?

OLIVIA

Um... I haven’t relistened to any of the episodes, so that was really interesting. Also, the clips were all of me, I thought you’d pick clips from the voicemails.

TAMMI

Thought about it, but wanted to focus on, like, your perspective.

OLIVIA

I can see that. (smiles) A bit more uncomfortable for me, but it does make sense I suppose.

TAMMI

(smiles) That’s my job on this show! To make you just a *little* uncomfortable (laughs)

OLIVIA

(laughs) Yes, I suppose it is.

TAMMI

Think that’s it for today. Thank you, as ever, dear Patreon supporters. We couldn’t do it without you!

OLIVIA

We really couldn’t. Thank you so very much.

TAMMI

And we have another drama school recording for next time, right?

OLIVIA

We do! Same director as the last one, but a different play. It seems like it’s their final production at drama school.

TAMMI

Exciting!

OLIVIA

Yes!

TAMMI

All right, I will take over again in about three months! Bye!

OLIVIA

Bye!

TRANSCRIPTTammi's Takeover - Patreon Bonus Episode 2: You think I’m typecast

(INTRO MUSIC)

Scene B2:1

TAMMI

Hello and welcome to Tammi’s Takeover – our very special show just for Patreon supporters of Y2K! I’m Tammi, and with me is of course Olivia...

OLIVIA

Hello everyone!

TAMMI

So excited to take over again!

OLIVIA

(laughs) I’m glad you are! I couldn’t do this on top of everything else.

TAMMI

Happy to. So, a lot has been happening in the voicemails lately.

OLIVIA

Oh yes.

TAMMI

How do you feel about it all?

OLIVIA

I feel... relieved that I am not trying to keep so many secrets anymore. (beat) And awful about Kat’s miscarriage, of course.

TAMMI

Yes. Did you know that would happen?

OLIVIA

No! I mean, I knew she doesn’t have a kid my age, but I knew nothing about the miscarriage. Not really the sort of thing she would talk to a child about, I suppose. And by the time I was grown up, it was so long ago.

TAMMI

But that means you knew something would happen.

OLIVIA

I did. And I was waiting for it – dreading it. But I couldn’t know when it would happen. And of course I *did* think she could have had a child and then put them up for adoption, too.

TAMMI

Oh... Didn’t think of that. So you were surprised when Kat announced she was pregnant in the voicemails?

OLIVIA

More like shocked. I was waiting for my mama – Rachel – to start talking about being pregnant, and sort of mentally preparing for telling the listeners, and then all of a sudden Kat is pregnant instead.

TAMMI

I can imagine. So, you call Rachel your mama-

OLIVIA

And Jess my mum, yeah. I don’t know if my parents planned that or if it just happened, but it’s handy for keeping them straight.

TAMMI

(raucous laughter) Straight?

OLIVIA

(joins in the laughter) Oh dear. *That* came out wrong.

TAMMI

(still laughing) Came out?

OLIVIA

(laughs again) Stop it!

TAMMI

(laughter winding down) OK. Fine. Where were we?

OLIVIA

(still a little giggly) I don’t know.

TAMMI

(slight laughter left) Guess it’s my job to... take over and check what we are supposed to be talking about... (paper rustling, deep breath) Right. Yes. We talked about this last episode, you found something special for us to include today, right Olivia?

OLIVIA

I did! In a different folder of my mum’s old computer I found some recordings of Kat and Jess from drama school. They start off serious but it’s a rehearsal so I think there’s some silly stuff too.

TAMMI

Fun! What are they rehearsing?

OLIVIA

A play called House of Bernarda Alba by a Spanish playwright (paper rustles) Federico Garcia Lorca. I’d never heard of it – googled and it seems to be a pretty depressing story about a group of sisters in 1930’s Spain. But it’s all women which is pretty cool.

TAMMI

Yeah – that must be unusual for the time. All right, let’s listen!

Scene B2:2

(click, dramatic music?)

DIRECTOR

(claps hands twice) Right, everyone, we’re doing the scene with Amelia and Martirio, everyone else can take 30, you lucky bastards. (sound of group of actors leaving, low chatting (all female), doors closing) Right. So where are you when this scene begins?

KAT

Um... (script rustles) I’m at the table, doing some mending.

JESS

Me too.

DIRECTOR

All right, all right, good. Places. (sound of movement, wooden chairs, sitting down) Whenever you’re ready, you can... start.

KAT (as AMELIA)

(sighs) I no longer know if it’s better to have a fiancé or not.

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

It makes no difference.

KAT (as AMELIA)

It’s all the gossip that’s to blame, they won’t let you live. Adelaida must have had a bad time of it.

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

(uncertain) They’re afraid of mother. She’s the only one who knows the truth about Adelaida’s father and how he got his land. Whenever she comes here, mother sticks the knife in. Her father killed his first wife’s husband, in Cuba, to marry-

DIRECTOR

Right. Thank you. All right. Um. You know. It sounds like you’re reading a grocery list, Jess, and it’s not a good one, y’know? ‘S... just full of oranges. Just... C’mon!

JESS

(frustrated sound) All right.

DIRECTOR

This is one of those lines that you have to (makes grunting noise), you have to (makes grunting noise), yes, you see? You have to inject some interest into it, because it’s all exposition. Right? You got that?

JESS

(scribbles on script) Right.

DIRECTOR

And you know it’s a, it’s a dramatic story, it’s not a... you know, it’s not a introverts festival- It’s just... Look, do we have a hat anywhere? (rummages around) Do we have a hat? Do we have a hat somewhere? Yes! Here! (throws it at JESS, she catches it) Right. OK. So- Put that on. Right. Now do the scene from the top, but stand over here. Kat, your job, right, if you’re willing to accept it, is to grab the hat.

KAT

(smiles) OK.

DIRECTOR

Right. And Jess, right, you, you cannot let her grab it.

JESS

(smiles) Got it.

DIRECTOR

Whenever you’re ready.

(sound of tussle and slight giggles, also scripts being waved around, throughout scene, BOTH much quicker and more energetic)

KAT (as AMELIA)

I no longer know if it’s better to have a fiancé or not.

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

It makes no difference.

KAT (as AMELIA)

It’s all the gossip that’s to blame, they won’t let you live. Adelaida must have had a bad time of it.

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

They’re afraid of mother. She’s the only one who knows the truth about Adelaida’s father and how he got his land. Whenever she comes here, mother sticks the knife in. Her father killed his first wife’s husband, in Cuba, to marry the wife. Then he abandoned her here, and went off with another woman who had a daughter, and *then* had an affair with the daughter, Adelaida’s mother, and married *her* when the second wife died insane.

DIRECTOR

Thank you! Better. Right. Jess, Jess, Jess, Jess, come here, come here, could you feel the difference, yes?

JESS

Yes!

DIRECTOR

Yes, good. Good, good, good. Right. Now you need to keep that energy, both of you, OK, but now get into the emotions of the scenes, right. Now, can’t have you sitting down. Um... (script pages rustling) Jess, you stand up, right, and you go down stage left on “It makes no difference”. OK, do that.

JESS

Yep. (scribbles on script)

DIRECTOR

OK, good. Aah, and Kat, um, can you follow her on “It’s all the gossip...” so you end up here. (sounds of moving around) Like this. OK? No... That’s right, good. More hip. Good, lovely.

KAT

OK. (scribbles on script)

DIRECTOR

Take it from “And why is the wretch...”, Kat.

KAT

Where? (script pages rustling) Oh. OK.

DIRECTOR

Whenever you’re ready. (pause) OK, come on. Whenever you’re ready.

KAT (as AMELIA)

And why is that wretch not in jail?

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

Because men cover up things like that among themselves, and no one’s willing to speak out.

KAT (as AMELIA)

But Adelaida’s not to blame for all that.

JESS (as MARTIRIO)

No, but stories are repeated. And to me it all seems one dreadful repetition. Her fate is the same as her mother’s and her grandmother’s, both wives of the man who enge

Tammi's Takeover - Patreon Bonus Episode 1: Google Fu, of course

(INTRO MUSIC)

Scene B1:1

TAMMI

Hello and welcome to Tammi’s Takeover – our extra-special show exclusive to Patreon supporters of Y2K! My name is Tammi, and here’s also Olivia...

OLIVIA

Hello!

TAMMI

And first of all we have to say thank you!

OLIVIA

Yes – thank you so much! Your support is fantastic and means we can cover our hosting fees, among other things.

TAMMI

Yes! So this is our way of giving back to you. And you don’t know what we’re doing, right Olivia?

OLIVIA

(slightly nervous laugh) No!

TAMMI

(evil laugh) So this is all me... And for this first one I thought I’d interview you.

OLIVIA

Oh. (smiles) All right.

TAMMI

So the listeners know some things about you, but definitely not everything. I have a list of questions here, and we’re going to start off with some quick rapid fire ones – don’t think too long, just give an answer. All right?

OLIVIA

(a little dubious) OK.

TAMMI

Don’t worry, it’ll be fun! Here goes. (beat) Favourite TV show?

OLIVIA

Um... Stranger Things, probably, I...

TAMMI

Stop! Rapid fire, remember? Favourite food?

OLIVIA

Avocado... avocado anything really.

TAMMI

(laughs) Quicker, one word! Best movie ever?

OLIVIA

Memento. Or-

TAMMI

You said it now! Worst movie ever?

OLIVIA

A.I.

TAMMI

Good! Most re-read novel?

OLIVIA

The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

TAMMI

Oh, good one! What is your favorite band or artist?

OLIVIA

Men I Trust, I think-

TAMMI

OK, moving on to some longer questions. If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

OLIVIA

Well, right now it’d be some sort of drama, I suppose, (laughs) Or a science documentary! (TAMMI laughs) And playing me... Oh that is hard... A young Emmy Rossum maybe? With glasses!

TAMMI

Good choice! All right. What’s your dream job?

OLIVIA

Well, you know that. I’d love to go into research in the field we’re studying right now.

TAMMI

Palaeontology or Geology?

OLIVIA

Palaeontology probably... or both!

TAMMI

Of course. If you were famous what would you be famous for?

OLIVIA

Um, my podcast? (BOTH laugh) Or, later, my ground-breaking research, of course.

TAMMI

Right. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

OLIVIA

(laughs) These questions are all over the place. Where *did* you get them?

TAMMI

(laughs) Google Fu, of course. (BOTH laugh)

OLIVIA

Of course. (smiles) I’m quite quick in the mornings – I’m a morning person anyway, and I don’t fiddle too much with my hair or my clothes, and I don’t usually bother with make-up, so... half an hour tops? Including shower and breakfast.

TAMMI

Quicker than me! All right. What is the first thing you notice about someone when you first meet?

OLIVIA

Oh... I don’t know... Their voice maybe? And if they seem friendly. Warm. Yeah.

TAMMI

Not anything about their looks?

OLIVIA

Sure, if their looks are particularly striking in one way or another. But in general, think it’s the voice.

TAMMI

You are the perfect podcaster! Strange really that you haven’t done student radio before this...(beat) Right. If you had access to a time machine where and when would you go?

OLIVIA

(laughs) Well I should really say sometime in the Mesozoic era, shouldn’t I? And that would be incredible. But finding these voicemails... it’s made me really curious about what was going on in the year 2000, so I’d probably say that.

TAMMI

Wouldn’t that be really weird? Seeing your mum and... everyone?

OLIVIA

(laughs) Probably! But also I could find out some things... Things I want to know.

TAMMI

Like what?

OLIVIA

Things about... my family, my... origin.

TAMMI

Can’t you just ask them?

OLIVIA

I could. But... now is not the best time. I figure if I keep asking our listeners if they know anything about Kat or Jess or their friends, eventually I will get a lead to what I want to know.

TAMMI

(smiles) Which is?

OLIVIA

(laughs) I’m not telling you!

TAMMI

(smiles) Fine. But surely you can tell our Patreon supporters *something* the regular listeners won’t know?

OLIVIA

Yes, that is only fair, isn’t it? Hm... I can say that I’ve got no siblings. And that I know both Kat and Jess in the present. Does that work?

TAMMI

Yes. Anything else you want to say about the podcast, or the voicemails, before we wrap this up?

OLIVIA

Well, thank you again so much. This podcast has been so much more than I expected when I started. Finding listeners who care about the show, and about... me ... is wonderful.

TAMMI

Yes! And I am so excited you brought me on board, too! Thanks for doing this, we are planning on doing more Tammi’s Takeover episodes. And you found something you wanted us to include next time, I think?

OLIVIA

Yes! I found some drama school rehearsal files with Jess and Kat.

TAMMI

That will be fun! So... watch out for that – I will take over again in about three months! Bye!

OLIVIA

Bye!
