Episode 6 - Business Boyz feat. Jason Lynch

1h 47m · Published 01 Jun 19:00

It's business time. Support the show at patreon.com/justinreid

Townsville entrepreneur, pinball wizard and creative mastermind Jason Lynch joined me, and we talked business - real business. This episode will be great for anyone who's excited about learning the inner works of entrepreneurial endeavours, and hearing how creative people like he and I channel our insanity into interesting business ideas. This was a riff-heavy episode, a little more loose than the usual episode flow but it was so fun, and we laughed the whole time.

Jason is based in Townsville, Australia, and runs local arcade-bar Empire, alternative gifts store Natures Wisdom and clothing label Pinhead. You can buy his awesome shirts here.

Episode 5 - 2Kool4Skool feat. Elijah Clarke

1h 52m · Published 21 May 06:16

Folks - we went long on this one. Support the show at patreon.com/justinreid

Film photographer, videographer and good friend Elijah Clarke joined me this week, and we reflected on our previous and current experiences with higher education - the good, the bad, the ugly - and ideas for how our arts education system could be improved. We also waxed lyrically about the benefits of taking creative risks on commercial projects, and the satisfaction that comes from putting yourself out there and delving into fields and subject matter you have no experience with.

Elijah is based in Melbourne, Australia, and you can view his work on his website, his YouTube channel and follow him on Instagram.

Happy May, and welcome to Episode 4. Support the show at patreon.com/justinreid

I'm really excited about this week's episode, as we have well and truly gone international. Filmmaker, knitter and cat whisperer Guðný Rós Þórhallsdóttir joined me from all the way over in Iceland, and we dived deep into the differences and similarities between our filmmaking styles, what it's like going viral on YouTube, gave each other advice on surviving through this nightmarish time and we each had some revelations about where we are headed in our professional futures.

We also talked about her hilarious viral music video for Daði Freyr's Think About Things, which totally would've won Eurovision this year. Check it out here: Think About Things.

Don't miss her darkly funny and gorgeous debut short film Vitamin C. Check it out here: Vitamin C.

Lastly, view her directing portfolio here: Skot Productions - Guðný Rós.

Episode 3 - At The Door feat. Tayla Maree

1h 32m · Published 18 Apr 19:00

Episode 3 - all good things come in threes, especially 7213. Support the show at https://www.patreon.com/justinreid

Super creative friend and thoughtful illustrator Tayla Maree joins me this week. Tayla is a multidisciplinary artist from rural Queensland, who specialises in soft landscapes, plant and animal studies, and has recently branched out into creating quirky digital portraits.

We talk about the importance of taking yourself seriously as an artist as a key tenet of self care, reigniting your creative passion when you're burnt out, and discovering the authenticity that audiences crave in your practice. Chatting with Tayla was really refreshing, and is another key moment for me lately in understanding the need to slow down and really focus on what matters.

Follow her and check out her amazing work on Instagram @dot.taylamaree and at www.taylamaree.com.

BONUS - Thank You Bernie

20m · Published 09 Apr 06:21

Hey folks - for those who know me, know I'm an ardent follower of US politics, and in particular have a love for Bernie Sanders and his populist movement. Last night, he dropped out of the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary, and I just wanted to share some off-the-cuff feelings and gratitude towards him. I'm feeling hopeful despite all this. If you wanna chat about these things, or anything about our crazy world right now, hit me up. Happy to offer some thoughts and feels. Love you all.

Episode 2 - Sons of Liberty feat. Chun Yin Wong

1h 44m · Published 07 Apr 04:57

Episode 2 - welcome back! Support the show at https://www.patreon.com/justinreid

This week I'm joined by long-time friend of mine Chun Yin Wong, fellow freelance filmmaker, animator, and undisputed king of working long hours in a dark room (I'm second to him). We break down the idea of perfectionism and overcoming creative block, and chat about the lack of personal projects in our filmmaking community. In the second half, Chun regales me with some stories of growing up in the Solomon Islands, growing out of an isolation mindset, and finally leaves us with his gaming recommendations for extended time indoors.

In our first episode, together with some dear friends of mine - Alex and Kodie from Townsville indie rock band Late November - we dive deep. Shattering the myth of the starving artist paradigm, dissecting the ways that our creativity can be co-opted for unsavoury ends, and brainstorming our way through the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation and subsequent economic collapse.

Kodie and Alex are good friends of mine, and their music is super special to me. Check them out on Instagram, Facebook, and everywhere you stream music.
