DSO 2.0. How new regulations in Germany affect digital transformation.

19m · Published 09 Feb 20:00

New requirements and regulations are demanding DSO in Germany take on new responsibilities. According to the Energy Industry Act, electric network operators are obliged to ensure the security and reliability of the electricity supply in their network. Redispatch measures are carried out to ensure grid stability and to avoid network bottlenecks.

In this podcast Remigiusz Pluciennik, Renewable Energy Expert at E.DIS | E.ON Distribution Grids introduce a new definition of the distribution system operator in German: DSO 2.0 and share his insights as well as offer tips to utilities challenged by the new regulations and digital transformation. You will learn:

  • What is Redispatch 2.0
  • How does it affect utilities
  • What utilities need to do to prepare
  • Tips towards DSO 2.0

What is redispatch?

The term "redispatch" stands for a change in the intended use of the power plant to avoid network bottlenecks. In order to ensure grid stability, the transmission system operators are currently primarily producing and using an overview (load flow or network load calculation) of the expected feed-in and feed-out at the various grid levels. If network congestion can be expected from the load flow or network load calculation, so-called redispatch measures are taken. As a rule, this means that additional power plants, for example in regions with high consumption, are activated or instructed to increase their output. At the same time, other power plants originally planned in the power plant deployment planning, which due to their geographical location contribute to the emergence of the network bottleneck, are instructed to reduce their performance. Redispatch is currently carried out with conventional large power plants from 10 MW and the new regulations will add new obligations for DSOs in Germany.

The future for digital integration platforms: A new architecture for innovation

15m · Published 15 Jan 17:00

With the unprecedented rate of change happening in the energy sector today you could say “The only constant is disruption.”

Where there is constant disruption, there must also be constant innovation.

Where once innovation might have been the remit of a particular team or department within utility companies, now it must come from across the organization. In this podcast Greenbird's Enno Dreier shares how utility IT organizations can be structured so that innovation can be maximized.

You will learn:

  • What a pace-layered application strategy is and how it is used in the energy sector
  • What slows down innovation and what can be done about it
  • Recommendations to optimise time and resource to accelerate innovation
  • Predictions for the energy sector from an architectural point of view

Trends in the European Energy Sector

13m · Published 05 Dec 09:00

Thorsten Heller, CEO of Greenbird discusses the hottest trends in the energy sector with Claire Volkwyn, Editor at Smart Energy International during European Utility Week and POWERGEN Europe.

Four years ago, the landmark Paris Climate Change Agreement was reached. Fifty-five countries agreed to “combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future.”

Change is hard, and of course the agreement has had its own recent challenges, but it was interesting to see how these values were very much in focus at European Utility Week in Paris. In the opening keynote presentations, many of the speakers addressed the urgency for the Energy Transition, reflecting the industry’s awareness that change is not only here, it needs to accelerate.

Today, there are numerous challenges for the sector. In the keynote panel discussion, participants identified many, including infrastructure issues, growing complexity, affordability, cooperation from players within the industry and the increasing volumes of data utilities and their employees are now managing.

The city of Paris was a pioneer both of street lighting and new ideas; hence its nickname ‘The City of Light’. As the world’s energy community gathered in the city, will their discussions lead to the innovative ideas that will keep all our cities well lit and powered in a sustainable way for generations to come?

So, let’s shed some light on the key themes under discussion at EUW 19/ Enlit at the Greenbird stand.
