Biz503 S03E09 - Retail Survivors

29m · Published 17 Dec 16:51
Today we’re discussing the survivors. Not the reality show but retail survivors, local businesses that keep their heads above water even as so many of us paddle over to Amazon to order every product imaginable delivered to our door. These are the record stores, bookstores, gift shops, and all the other businesses that were supposed to have died in the internet age. And certainly many have. But what about the others? The survivors? What keeps customers coming through their doors? This week’s Biz503 hosts are Linda Weston of strategic consulting firm Rapporto and Mike Rogoway, business reporter for The Oregonian. This week’s guests: Anna Marum, Retail and Commercial Real Estate Reporter for The Oregonian Alisa Pyszka, Principal at Leland Consulting Group Terry Currier, Owner of Music Millenium Listen to Biz503 Fridays, 1:00 pm. at 99.1 FM in the heart of Portland, or stream from anywhere worldwide at PRP.fm.

Biz503 S03E08 - Centeral Eastside

29m · Published 11 Dec 02:49
From milestones like OMSI to the Tilikum Crossing, the recent transformation of Portland’s Central Eastside is dramatic. The previously-industrial area now features tall residential buildings near the Burnside Bridge and new office buildings near the Hawthorne Bridge. After actively preserving the area as an “industrial sanctuary,” recent plans have put forward a new definition of what “industrial” means in the 21st century. This week, we continue our occasional series on fast-changing areas of the Portland region with an update on Central Eastside’s development. We will speak with two guests who are very familiar with the area’s past, present, and possible future. This week’s Biz503 host is Rebecca Webb, Co-Founder of Portland Radio Project. This week’s guests: Troy Doss, Senior Planner for the City of Portland Peter Stark, Architect and founder of Peter Stark Design Architecture and Planning Listen to Biz503 Fridays, 1:00 pm. at 99.1 FM in the heart of Portland, or stream from anywhere worldwide at PRP.fm. Biz503 S03E07 - Women In Tech

23m · Published 02 Dec 19:17
The tech industry, innovative and as it might see itself, has not always been the most modern in its views of gender within its own work. As if we needed more proof, the now infamous "Google memo" bears that out in an instant. But that begs the question: well, what do we do? Today, we're talking with two women who, we think, have some of the answers. They are pioneers of women's empowerment in the tech industry, and they have salient advice for those both inside the industry and out. This week's Biz503 hosts: Wendy Kotila, Business Coach, Startup Mentor and Teacher Rebecca Webb, Co-Founder of Portland Radio Project This week's guests: Janice Levenhagen-Seeley, Founder and CEO of ChickTech Megan Bigelow, Co-Founder of PDX Women in Tech Listen to Biz503 Fridays, 1:00 pm. at 99.1 FM in the heart of Portland, or stream from anywhere worldwide at PRP.fm. If you miss the broadcast, you can listen to the podcast here on the Monday following the broadcast. Biz503 S03E06 - Portland Mercado

26m · Published 19 Nov 16:09
Today we’re devoting an entire episode to the Portland Mercado, a unique Latino public market at 72nd and Foster in Southeast Portland. That’s just a mile up the street from our studios here at Portland Radio Project, in a 7,000-square-foot space on the site of an old car lot. Now the building is painted in bright colors, with a variety of retail businesses inside and a row of food carts outside featuring cuisine from all across Latin America. The Mercado is a project of Hacienda CDC, which is probably best known for its housing and youth programs, and it isn’t just a market -- it’s a business incubator supporting over three dozen small start-up businesses. On today's show, we’ll be talking about the past, present and future of the Mercado. This week's Biz503 hosts: Wendy Kotila, Business Coach, Startup Mentor and Teacher.
