Episode #01 - Introduction to the Host Aswad Thomas - A Survivor of Gun Violence & Author of The Stars Represent You and Me

59m · Published 01 Jan 18:00
To kick off the Black Men That Write Podcast episode, I wanted to share my background story on what led me to launch this new show. Tune in to learn about my experiences of growing up in Highland Park, Michigan & Hartford, Connecticut. During today's show, you'll hear me talk about losing my best friend to gun violence when we were 10 years old, the impact of my brother being incarcerated the past 19 years, my college basketball career, becoming the first male in my family to graduate college, and the day I got shot twice in my back during a robbery. These experience led me to forgive the young men that shot me and started a new chapter in my life, becoming a national expert on gun violence and criminal justice reform. Since then, I have built a national network of crime survivors, helped passed dozens of criminal justice reform laws, and shifted millions of dollars into communities for trauma recovery services. I'm a new author, founder of King & Queen Publishing, and the Black Men That Write Podcast creator. Tune in now to hear my story "From Pain to Power," and stay tuned for more episodes with other Black Men That Write as special guests. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blackmenthatwritepodcast/support
