Welcome to the Career Composing Podcast - Episode #6

In this episode, we interview Lee Elberson, the CEO of Clayborne Education, a tutoring company based in Charlottesville, VA. He’s been tutoring since college, but turned it into a career after a stint in academia showed him his love for teaching others.

We discuss different pathways to get into tutoring, and some misconceptions about the level of content expertise required. Lee says skills such as one-on-one interpersonal skills are paramount, and using those skills can lead tutors to be successful in a number of different capacities. We also discuss some challenges in getting started and the outlook for the tutoring market.

In this episode, we interview Ryan Zaleski – Software Architect and Director of Software Engineering at TechDynamism, a technology consulting firm. As a kid, Ryan built his first computer with his dad and taught himself how to program by reading his dad’s college textbook. He’s been in the tech industry for 18 years, doing everything from Network Administration and Help Desk to Software Development and Systems Design.

We asked Ryan about the different types of roles in the software field, as well as the individual characteristics that he thinks might help someone build a successful career in the tech space. We also discussed the different organizations that employ software developers and different roles that are in the tech space but might not rely on programming expertise. For those looking to get started in the field, we cover a few different avenues including formal and informal education.
