58m · Published 29 May 17:00

On this episode of The Burial Plot, we visited with Michael Picco.

Michael is an award-winning short-story writer, poet and essayist; novelist; and occasional columnist living in the Colorado high country. Michael received his B.A. in English from Western State University in Colorado but his fascination with the genre started when he read The Outsider by H. P. Lovecraft in third grade. Since receiving his degree, he has contributed to several well-reviewed anthologies and has written an award-winning collection of short stories titled: Scenes from the Carnival Lounge, A Collection of Odd Tales.

Michael released his second collection, Corpse Honey, A Banquet of Gruesome Tales in 2020. His latest publishing credit, The Wheel, can be found in the Murder & Machinery, Tales of Technological Terror and Mechanical Madness, released this year.

We discuss the particular vein of horror that Michael creates in and why he writes horror. Michael shares some places where he gets inspiration complete with a wonderfully horrid description of corpse honey and zombie creating fungi.

Michael describes his involvement with the Colorado Independent Publishers Association (CIPA) and his own Sisyphus Publications imprint and why he set it up. He shares with us about his book cover and interior design offerings and some upcoming releases.

He reads from Mortimer the Maus from his book Corpse Honey.

EP.5 With HOWLS Own Solomon Forse & P.L. McMillan

53m · Published 21 May 23:00

In this episode of Burial Plot, we are joined by P.L McMillan and Solomon Forse with HOWLs, aka the Horror-Obsessed Writing and Literature Society.

P.L. McMillan writes of all things murderous, macabre, and monstrous. She has been described as one of the next great cosmic horror writers. In addition to her dark compositions, PL is an accomplished artist working with cross-stitch, digital art, oil painting, and resin art. Her latest piece Sanitize can be found in Cosmic Horror Monthly Issue 8.

Solomon Forse is the founder of HOWLs who also teaches English during the day and reads, watches, and writes horror at all other times. You might find him role-playing horror with tabletop RPGs like Call of Cthulhu or shredding horror on the guitar in his Lovecraft-themed black metal band Crafteon.

Solomon shares with us the birth of HOWLs and gives an overview of this wonderful and diverse community of horror creators and fans. P.L. discusses the Society's growth and the many facets and areas of participation for members and how we can join in the mayhem.

Solomon and P.L. talk about HOWLs anthology Howls From Hell: A Horror Anthology which released on May 18 in paperback, ebook, and audiobook on Amazon and most other major booksellers.

We are thrilled that they each shared from their pieces that appear in the anthology.
P.L. reads an excerpt from “Manufactured God” and Solomon reads an excerpt from “Gooseberry Bramble”.

Burial Plot EP 4 With Adrianne Montoya

1h 20m · Published 04 May 19:00

In this episode, we chat with Adrianne Montoya.

Adrianne writes literary horror with a folkloric and historical flavor. She has studied and worked in fields as varied as anthropology, archaeology, literature, languages, linguistics, and education. She specializes in developing long-form literary fiction, thrillers, horror, and historical fiction, but also enjoys taking on non-fiction projects. She is the curator of the paused Southwest Gothic podcast.

We cover tropes and ghost stories of the Southwest, the function of oral tradition in the West, and how to make these timeless stories accessible to readers. We ask Adrianne about her opinion of women horror writers taking back tropes and using horror as a platform for catharsis. She was also kind enough to read from one of her works in progress inspired by the tale of La Llorona.
