36 - Wilbar Cattle - INC Cattle Co - Cay's Cattle - Serhienko Cattle Co

1h 41m · Published 21 Nov 06:00

This episode is all about celebrating the accomplishment of Canadians having success with breeding cattle in the show ring in Canada and the United States! Each of the three parts were fun to record as the stories of winners and their contributions to programs I truly find hard to resist. From finding or breeding one to following it though to achieve the biggest dreams, its what we all chase.

Wilbar Cattle

Bryan and Tracey take us through their time with Conley Southpoint 8362. Their decision to purchase through showing and then now seeing the rewards of their efforts. I will always cheer for cattle to not only win in the show ring but to work in the real world where livelihoods are made on breeding decisions and quality cattle.

INC Cattle Co

A sweep of the first ever American National Speckle Park Show with Champion Female and Champion Bull. Born and raised, that feeling of knowing they are special, seeing your dreams playout and knowing your efforts and work even in the crappiest of moments all built up to this!

Cay’s Cattle/Serhineko Cattle Co

SVY Mayfield 30H. Registration number 1 million in the AICA. Multiple times Grand Champion in 2022 in Edmonton and at Agribition. The Supreme Champion bull at Agribition. Denver National Champion. His first American semen offering selling in its entirety to one breeder for $140,000USD. It is interesting hearing both side. Finding the right one, breeding that one. Working on him, the team effort it takes. Putting an animal of that caliber in the right place at the right time with the max effort to look the right way.

Congratulations to all of my guests on this episode on their achievements.

35 - Robbert Ballantyne & Diamond B Ranches

1h 15m · Published 17 Nov 06:00

When I had the idea to have Robert Ballantyne on the podcast I reached out to several mutual acquaintances and received back a pile of information and questions to ask. Every person I talked to was excited about what would come from this interview, I felt the pressure to make it happen. Good thing Robert is such a great guy to visit with and really knocked it out of the park.

I wanted to keep this interview to release at Agribition as it is such a special event and place for Robert. He built a career and lifestyle, memories and a brand at Canadian Western Agribition. Robert’s selfless contributions to CWA helped to build its international report and widen its audience.

Diamond B was at the most elite level of Galloway Cattle across the globe and the Ballentyne’s goal was to just keep getting better every chance they could. I will listen back on this interview a lot driving down the road or doing chores. The knowledge and genuine nature of Robert is captivating. His advice is second to none and his love for the Canadian Cattle Industry is alive as ever.

A closing remark from a close friend of mine after telling him Mr Ballantyne was going to be my Agribition release, “He is a damn good human. They don't make them better than Robert.” It is a fact that the Lifestock Podcast audience will enjoy this one.

34 - Chad Ross L-7 Land & Cattle

1h 30m · Published 23 Oct 06:00

The fall is here, chill in the air and snow in the forecast. I love this time of year.

Chad Ross from L-7 Land and Cattle joined me on this episode to talk about cows. Chad has been active in the industry from day one. I had even forgotten about him working in the Semen industry until we visited more about it.

I think Chad’s perspective is unique as he has lived in the purebred world and then built his program with commercial cattle roots. In the episode we only scratched the surface talking about cows and family. I've always admired Chad’s dedication to board activity and being an influential member of the Canadian Beef business. Chad is on these boards and spends his time serving to make a difference, that's something we all should admire.

Enjoy our conversation!

33 - F'd Up Farming & MO Cattle Co.

2h 2m · Published 25 Sep 06:00

When I say my two guests are my guys, I really mean that. This podcast gets a little loose and off the rails because interviewing two of your best friends since college that have seen a bunch of the dumb crap you did, well it's harder to keep a straight tone. I do appreciate Royce O’Neil and Tyler ‘Talls’ Martin for keeping the stories to a decent minimum and the chirps subdued enough.

We got into how I started my podcast first and then they copied my idea… actually we literally had the same brain child at about the exact same time. Then we bounced some ideas and other things off one another. My guest’s podcast is called, F’d Up Farming. If you can’t tell by the name, there are a few cuss words tossed in their episodes that cover farming topics, one of the most badass segments ever called killing the day and how they have built an epic Texas Country playlist on Spotify. Plus, maybe their claim to fame, their booze review. This is primarily bourbon, and it is exceptional. Make sure to find that playlist on Spotify and their episodes on all podcast platforms.

Wrapping up we discussed their new cattle business because heck we had too! MO Cattle Co and their ideas/philosophy. It was fun to listen and hear their perspectives as commercial cattlemen that are stepping into the seedstock market for the first time.

Kreoger if you're reading this, yes i talk about it in the close out.

32 - Tanya Belsham with Poplar Meadows Angus

1h 43m · Published 11 Sep 06:00

Tanya said right from the start before I hit record, “I usually am quite straight forward, I like doing business like that.” Tanya, I sure as heck do too! Poplar Meadows Angus is an elite supplier of Angus genetics world wide. Tanya has built her herd by sourcing top genetics in the breed that fit her vision, readily propagating them and not being shy about showing them off. With the next generation now active in the day to day, Poplar Meadows will keep doing what they love. Tanya has built a vast network of connections and a solid customer base for her bull and female sales. All based on that opening quote, being honest and straightforward.

This interview idea stemmed from a facebook post Tanya made in the winter of 2023 about what things could be done for cost savings at ‘sales events’ such as a bull sale. The post took on a life of its own and really debated topics such as sale management fees, auctioneering fees, facility rent, crew help, meals, beverage offerings, video sales, online sales… and on and on. We cleaned up the debate topics a bit and discussed some of the ideas.

We also talked about her in recent years herd reduction, the type she likes and her fire for a breed that her father loved too! I could have kept talking to her for hours. Selfishly I feel like I have expanded my network that much more too.

31 - River Hill Farm

1h 26m · Published 28 Aug 06:00

It was great to venture into the Speckle Park breed! Barry and Cory Ducherer were great guests to have. A rich history in the breed from literally a crow's flight to the birthplace and origin of the Breed outside of Maidstone Saskatchewan.

River Hill is synonymous with Speckle Park and is admired across the world. They have held record highs in the sales of animals and frozen genetics. The Ducherer family has had a massive amount of success in the showring as they continuously built their brand. My favorite part is that they did all this while helping to develop and market the breed as a whole!

We touched on sourcing genetics, the frozen frenzy of flushing cows sending eggs around the world, how the market changes and having to build breed acceptance when it is not 100+ years old. Where opportunity looks to be in the future and how their family has been a part of it all.

I learnt a bunch from each as we visited, especially that a love for cattle just never seems to fade!

29. Phil & Catherine Brown of Copper Creek Ranch

1h 38m · Published 26 Jun 06:00

This episode starts in the Agribition feed alley. Copper Creek were stalked nose to nose with us so one late feeding I was able to block

Phil from an easy exit and held him at gunpoint to come on the podcast… just kidding, he could have gone the long way around to get away.

Asking Phil and Catherine to be guests to me is a no brainer. Hard Working people I feel is an understatement. They have always led by example and had those results speak for themselves. With a diverse background and unique experiences we are so fortunate that they were willing to share with us on the podcast.  Cow families, what should you expect from your own marketing, pivoting with change.
