Ep 323: Witches, Warriors and Polyamory with Lucy Fry and Kate Hodges

How natural is monogamy? Or do you feel more comfortable with "monogam-ish"?

Author Lucy Fry opened her relationship after having some honest conversations with her partner, although she admits to not starting polyamory in the correct and honest way hear how it's working for her. Harriet, Emma and Natalie all discuss, what their personal preferences are when it comes to relationships.

And Lucy talks about the ways it has strengthened her relationships, how attachment can manifest in relationships and parenting in an open relationship. Her book "There Are Easier Ways To Say I Love You”, documents all of this and some more interesting details of her polyamory…..

The second badass guest this week is Kate Hodges who since childhood has always been more interested darker side of fairytales as the princess’ or heroines never quite did it for Kate admitting was more taken by the idea of the female baddie.

From Slavic witches to Japanese supernatural beasts, Kate is diving into the tales of some of the most nefarious, mythical women and reframing theses stories in a feminist light in her book Warriors, Witches, Women: Mythology's Fiercest Females.

Ep 322: A Glass Half Empty with Clare Pooley

An end of the day drink can be seen as “mummy’s little helper” on this extra spill the badass ladies are discussing the “Wine mum” culture of social media.

Author Clare Pooley aka the "Sober Mummy” tells Harriet, Natalie and Emma how two glasses of wine a night turned into ten bottles a week, and the moment she started to realise this wasn’t quite right!

She started a blog “Mummy was a secret drinker” to document everything she was feeling about her drink habits, Clare paired her blog writing with extensive research on the effects of drinking.  

Clare hasn’t drank for 5 years now, and although she says she doesn’t blame any mother for having a glass of wine of an evening Clare admits she saw positive impacts on her life since going sober, Clare also talks about the negative impacts that drinking had on her life and how things have changed for her, with her career and her role as a mother.

Ep 321: Rebel With Joy with Chidera Eggerue and Emily Aboud

Harriet, Emma and Natalie are joined by Chidera Eggerue AKA “The Slumflower”, the mind that brought us “Saggy Boobs Matter”.

Chidera is talking about her latest book “How To Get Over A Boy” which looks at the idea of romance vs love and the idea of love and relationships we are shown in the media especially in the 90’s era of rom-coms and chick-flicks. Chidera explains what the real “P-word” is and why women seem to accept less than they deserve and compromise within relationships more than a man. 

And together the ladies look at our own biases with our Body hair, why women feel the need to remove body hair and where this phenomena came from. Look out for Chidera’s documentary “Bring back the bush: where did our pubic hair go?” on Channel 4.

The second badass guest this week is Emily Aboud who has created the play “Splintered” which is based on conversations with women from Trinidad, telling the stories of growing up queer in the Caribbean. The play takes the form of a cabaret aiming to “educate the oppressed about being oppressed”.

Emily explains that the Caribbean in it’s history has been a difficult place for queer people and only had it’s first pride festival in 2018, the ladies discuss where this homophobia came from and Emily looks at how colonialism had an impact.

The first guest up on this weeks extra bits is Bangs Carey-Campbell A fitness guru and author.

A self confessed ex couch potato said she fell in love with the adrenaline she got from moving her body, Bangs urges you to adjust your goals to suit you if you’re struggling to meet them. She claims to be a big believer that fitness should not be a punishment but should be enjoyed, it’s all about doing what suits you, having fun, incremental change, and listening to your body.

Her new book will show you how to start moving, discover and fall involve with movement and why “Doin’ it for the ‘gram” might actually help. For more information on her book click here.

The "This Girl Can" campaign changed the way advertising looked at women and the female body, highlighting the strength of women and how normal women exercise and what women’s bodies really look like. 

The ladies are joined by Kate Dale the creator of the campaign, she shares an amazing statistic that, 3 million women have got more involved with sport as a direct result of this campaign and with this new campaign they are continuing to inspire. The latest campaign aiming to show “the unfiltered reality of women’s lives” from childcare to menopause and periods and how they fit into our everyday.

Helen’s new book has a darker feel than her two previous book which has inspired her to take on the pseudonym H. C. Warner. Helen talks procrastination habits and why she found being a full time write rather challenging and actually prefers writing on the train to work?!

Also hear how she made a success of the legendary British daytime TV show “Lose Women” during her early career in TV as well as some of the most trying and testing moments in her career including launching “This Morning” and “Good Morning Britain”.

Harriet asks How we can become an expert at relationships and reveals she is a trained life coach too, she felt the necessity to help other women after feeling the benefits of being coached herself!

And I know we hear this a lot at the minute, but Camila expresses the importance of self care in her life and the things she learnt from burn out as a dancer.

The Coven Girl Gang is a new platform offering a support network to millennial female freelancers and “career babes” the ladies are talking to the founder Sapphire Bates.

Named the social network for “the Instagram generation” Sapphire explains why she started the network, and felt women especially needed a bit of creative support, she also talks about her love hate relationship with the app that has meant she can grow her business in todays social media driven world. 

The second guest this week is Jude Kelly founder of the Women Of The World Festival. Jude gives Harriet and Claudia a lesson in equality, feminism and what is still to be achieved.

“The Women Of The World Festival” is an event to unite women from all over the globe so they can discuss issues that go beyond race, religion and country. This festival is a crucial event to lead women and the future generations to greater equality. As Jude says, “this isn’t about getting women to just level up with men, this is about bringing more complex, intersectional thinking into the world.”

Ep 316: There Is a New Bunch of Angels in Town with Linda Blacker and Enam Asiama

What do you think of when you think of when you think of Victoria’s Secret? The badass ladies are we-writing the norm on the studio this week.

 

This year the woman’s underwear brand Victoria’s Secret aren’t doing their famous Angels shoot so photographer Linda Blacker has stepped in instead. Linda has created the alternative Angels shoot to celebrate women, the diversity and beauty of the female form. She is telling Harriet, Emma and Scarlet about why she felt the need for an image like this to be created and the process of making it happen. Find the image here.

Joining her in the studio is Enam Asiama is a plus sized model and speaker, spreading the message of body positivity and self love and plus sized visibility, who took part in the shoot. The pair are explaining why they believe big brands should be stepping up to represent diversity in their marketing so all women can see themselves represented in the media and life.

Ep 314: Learning Real Love and Respect with Holly Bourne

Are your favourite love films portraying actually damaging relationships?

On this extra snippet from the show is author Holly Bourne, Holly is an ambassador for Women’s Aid, together they have created a campaign aiming to educate teenagers about healthy relationships and the different forms that domestic abuse can take. Love Respect is a website that offers advice and stories showing what genuine healthy love looks like.

Holly explains to Harriet, and the ladies why we could be mistaking love for abuse within relationships, she believes that popular film and tv story lines are actually depicting stories of abusive relationships, even cult favourites like “Love Actually”.

They also ask why abusers take advantage within their relationships and if the perpetrator even realises they are doing anything wrong in the first place?

Also a listener of the show rings up to speak about his own experience with the domestic abuse system and how he has recovered, he shares his own advice for recognising your own possibly abusive behaviour.
