Ben Player and I had been planning to do this interview in person when we next met up. It hadn't happened. Sean and I sit in a studio adorned with images of some of my favourite surfers. He talks me through a few as we warm up the vocal chords before the onslaught of questions I'm about to ask him. Australian Surfing Life magazine (ASL as it used to be named) was a stable of my grommethood...first released in 1985, I didn't come across it untill two years later when my addiction to surfing began. When I hit my teens and our tiny coastal town had a dedicated newsagents, the only thing better than walking the 40mins to the shop, pulling the mag from the stand and thumbing the glossy pages of endless waves and being transported to tropical locations, the only thing better was not having to put it back and actually being able to pay for a copy. Travis and I walk the elevated driveway to the legendary Peter Joli Wilson's residents. Perched atop a hill we overlook the distant waters of the Gold Coast. "Please, come in." Joli greets us and invites us in. "I've never done a podcast before!" He smiles as we sit at the family dinning table. "Don't worry mate" I reply..."I've done a few." Dylan re-assures me that we should paddle out here....I dont agree, I've surfed this place for 20 years....a bomb set washes through the keyhole further up where I'm pointing...."Ok, we'll go out here I say". Dylan's already 20 meters away, paddling out...I'm arguing alone.lol. I've been trying to have a conversation with Dylan for over a year, his Youtube clips would inspire me when feeling flat to get in the drink. Thundercloud...a surf documentary about MASSIVE waves at a life threatening location...this was Talon's pinnacle of his craft at the time...independent film making. Talon's an award winning Cinema film maker that's humble enough to only mention it after pressing him. In this Episode we talk about his experience working in the TV industry, being head of audio/visual for Billabong at the height of the industry and his drive to make surf movies since being a teenager. We discuss his love of travel and adventure and what it's like to release a film to the world....spoiler alert....its stressful and rewarding!lol.
