Adding secure low-code to the developer's toolkit

22m · Published 17 May 13:36

With the pressure on teams of developers to iterate quickly and bring projects to production status, low-code frameworks can be the difference between success and failure.

In this episode of Tech Means Business, we talk to Richard Davies, Director, Strategic Customers (APAC) of OutSystems, about how dev teams in the region can use low-code to produce secure and governance-compliant code that's up and running faster than using traditional tooling.

We cover different use cases for low-code, too, like updating legacy code, recreating more scalable extant applications, and creating scalability in what might be seemingly immovable, business-critical systems.

If your organization is looking at low-code, there are ways to test the water, like day-long jump start sessions, plus multiple online resources to absorb information and see what's possible.

Shopping around for cybersecurity partnerships

20m · Published 11 May 13:27

This podcast is produced in conjunction with Wipro.

The last time we talked to Wipro about retail, we were looking at some of the challenges facing companies as they transitioned their IT stack to the cloud. In this episode of the Tech Means Business podcast we look at cybersecurity in the retail space, and how outsourcing helps companies find compliant, scalable and safe ways to operate.

To attackers, every retailer and its assets (brick and mortar or virtual) are just IP addresses. So, what are the specific security issues facing the sector that, more than most, defines "edge computing" (or "many shops" as we might say)?

And with OT (operational technology) so significant in what are often long and complex supply chains, retailers have very specific cybersecurity issues that our guests address during the course of our discussion.

Safer digital public services in focus

21m · Published 11 May 07:49

The economic downturn is turning the screws on public sector funding right across the world. In the UK and Ireland that's no different, with smaller budgets, a demand for more open, easily accessible services and, of course, the expectation that everything is to be delivered safely.

Many government departments, authorities and taxpayer funded organisations look to outsourcing ‘non-core or enabling functions’ as a way of focusing on delivering the best core value to citizens.

There are particular constraints on the public sector in the UK & Ireland in terms of data sharing inside the auspices of the legal & regulatory requirements, plus a need to offer services down as many routes as possible to a very broad demographic.

On today's episode of the Tech Means Business podcast, Joe Green talks to two representatives from Wipro, a global multinational service provider, about some of these challenges and possible ways to approach cybersecurity service delivery in the public sector. Our guests talk about risk, cybersecurity education, and budgetary difficulties facing the sector, and bring their expertise to bear on this complex area.

Equipping and running the green data center with AMD & Dell Technologies

21m · Published 18 Apr 19:11

Data centers are crucial to the operations of businesses and individuals in today’s world. The hardware in these installations is responsible for many aspects of everyday life and global commerce. But like every device, each piece of technology in a DC needs resources to build, run, and often, cool.

To commemorate Earth Month, in this episode of the Tech Means Business podcast, we talk to two major players in the data center equipment space, AMD and Dell Technologies. Can these two global players change the ways that data centers operate so they run cooler, faster, and greener while ensuring the best performance and ROI?

In the APJ region, the race for cutting-edge technology is particularly strong: HPC (high-performance computing), AI (artificial intelligence), and ML (machine learning) are increasingly becoming table stakes in competitive markets. Listen in to hear how Dell PowerEdge servers, powered by the latest generations of AMD's microprocessors are producing tangible business results while reducing carbon emissions.

Secure by Design: AMD and Dell in the DC

16m · Published 04 Apr 09:30

There are no avenues that cybersecurity bad actors won't pursue - emails, software supply chain poisoning, networking, and hardware. For data center operators, and anyone who uses data center applications and services, keeping the systems that run in today's DCs is of paramount importance.

In 2023, even hardware manufacturers have to be hyper-vigilant about cybersecurity. With attacks on the internal workings of microchips themselves to the memory resources of a server, there's nowhere that's not susceptible to attack.

In today's episode of the Tech Means Business podcast, we talk to two household name technology vendors about how hardware can be hardened so the services running on them are more secure. Andrew Underwood from AMD and Chris Kelly from Dell talk about chips and servers that are shipped with security baked into hardware, and in Dell's case, accompanied by advanced tools to keep its latest Power Edge Server range more secure.

Whether you're running Kubernetes clusters or a Windows Server file share, your servers, or those in the data center you're using need to be as resistant as possible to types of attacks that are still evolving.

Why CIOs Promote Paperless Agreements for Digital Transformation

35m · Published 13 Mar 14:48

One of those areas of the modern enterprise that's crying out for digital transformation has to be agreement management: the process by which organizations can do business together.

The reason why agreements are in need of some technological muscle is down to their number, and the different layers of approval typically required in participating companies. How can the IT function help speed up agreement processes, but do it safely, efficiently and in line with best practice.

We turn to the de facto digital agreement solutions people, DocuSign, for some answers, in the form of Kartik Krishnamurphy. He's joined in conversation with Patrick Lam of SoftwareOne, and James Cooke University's Vijay Shreenivos: two end-user organizations with very specific requirements.

How can companies generate value from digital transformation rather than just "make things happen on technology"? Our guests on this episode of the Tech Means Business podcast have the answers.

For the Many, One: MSP Cybersecurity Considered

14m · Published 17 Feb 12:42

In light of the latest reports from the NCSC and ACSC (National [New Zealand] and Australian Cyber Security Centre) on best practice, companies and organisations in the region are looking to amend their everyday work processes. But many smaller outfits (think fewer than 100 people) have no dedicated IT team. In many cases, these will turn to their MSP (Managed Service Provider) for advice and, ultimately, protection from hackers and malware.

In this episode of the Tech Means Business podcast, we talk to Leon Friend of ConnectWise, about the software and systems that his company provides to MSPs: dedicated security systems designed from the ground up for MSPs. With each of an MSP's clients having specific requirements, configuring and managing mixed security provisions would be a nightmare with "normal" cybersecurity tools. Not so with the ConnectWise platform.

We cover some of the ACSC and NCSC's recommendations and talk about going further: back up, sure, but what to back up? Multifactor authentication, great, but is SMS really secure?

Access to data value for developers and the business, with Tinybird

27m · Published 09 Feb 10:54

The collected data at the modern organization's fingertips is truly immense in scale but also in possibility. Predictions of every company being "a data company" have been proven to be pretty accurate. But why then are so few organizations making the most of the information they have access to literally at their fingertips?

The answer lies in what has to happen to data before it can be queried, and then, of course, there's the thorny issue of composing queries. Neither process is particularly easy, and the situation is made more complex by the element of time: so-called up-to-date findings can be weeks or months old.

So how can companies access insights from data that's as close to real-time as possible, and do it at scale? The same repositories can yield value to multiple stakeholders, so there are multiple queries that need to happen.

Problematic? With today's featured guest, Jorge Sancha, co-founder and CEO of Tinybird the answer's "no." His company provides a way that developers (not data scientists) can create simple APIs in seconds that allow fast and powerful queries onto real-time data - without months spent at data science boot camp.

The MSP's Vital Role in Keeping the Internet Safe, with Kaspersky

21m · Published 01 Feb 12:32

Until companies and organizations get large enough to run their own dedicated cybersecurity function, many use the services of an MSP (managed service provider) to help protect them from the increasing number of attacks that happen each year.

Getting external help certainly works in dynamic computing environments, where companies are changing between on-premise, multi-, and hybrid-cloud deployments. But some companies shy away from contacting so-called big-name cybersecurity providers, wrongly assuming that large, expert companies are not interested in helping the smaller business.

In the APAC and Australasia region, Kaspersky is happy to explode the myth: it's here, especially that its expert services can be leveraged. As part of a larger digital transformation project, Kaspersky's easy licensing models keep the MSP's clients safe, drive cost efficiencies, and bring relief to organizations struggling to find specialized staff or with limited in-house resources.

Today's guests are Bridget Huang and Tako Nijsson from Kaspersky. We discuss the why's and wherefore's of cybersecurity via a third party and the growing threat landscape facing any online business in the APAC and beyond.
