Episode 8 - Home *is* where the heart is... but how do I afford one!?

44m · Published 10 Jun 18:00

It’s the Australian dream, right? A spouse or partner, two kids, a house in the ‘burbs with a yard, with prawns cooking on the barbie. Maybe that idyllic picture isn’t for everyone, but for those who do want it -  prices are pushing the property dream further and further out of reach. Plenty of young Aussies are looking at their bank balances, and thinking, 'How am I ever going to scrape together a deposit without a second income to cushion the blow?'

In this episode, Zoe and Carmel look at the challenges in place to buy a house, whether you’re single or loved up. They hear from our wider community about their experiences buying their first house, talk about their different perspectives, before interviewing John Fisher, who runs a Mortgage Broking Business in Sydney. He talks about the options available to you, the things to be aware of when accepting monetary gifts for homes, and the other hidden costs you need to be aware of when preparing to buy your first home.

Episode 7 - Love and other commodities, how do you navigate the world of money, love and dating apps?

38m · Published 18 Mar 21:42

So, it’s no secret that here at MPL, we believe the biggest financial decision you’ll ever make is who you spend the rest of your life with… So while we've spent a lot of time speaking about what to do after you meet your partner, we haven’t addressed how you find that special someone.

This week we talk to Samantha Jayne of the Husband project about what it’s like in the dating world these days. We address dating apps, types of lovers out there and the awkwardness about how do you decide who pays on the first date and how do men and women view this differently?

Carmel and Zoe also talk to two single friends who are out there, in the single market - Dave, and their friend Georgia of the Sh*t Dates podcast. Both give their perspectives on the different aspects of dating!

Episode 6 - Can I afford to have a baby?

37m · Published 11 Mar 17:00

Neither Carmel or Zoe want babies anytime soon… but they *do* know that babies are expensive, and it’s got them thinking… just how many dollars do you need? If you’re a couple who are now going to get by on a single income, what should you be thinking about? How does parental leave work? And how long do you have to be working somewhere to qualify for any type of leave? Does the government help you out? And how much money can you qualify for once the baby arrives?

To help them untangle some of the questions, they speak to Kelsey Jane from Finance Money Life (that's FML for short).

Episode 5 - The real cost of contraception

32m · Published 05 Mar 08:18

This week, we’re talking to Emily from 1800myoptions about the cost of contraception, hygiene products and abortion. 1800myoptions has talked to around 12000 women about their contraception, abortion, pregnancy options and other sexual health needs.

After all, two-thirds of Australian women of reproductive age use birth control. At 1800myoptions, they don’t give specific medical advice, but they’ve definitely talked to enough people to know there are a lot of trends around who's paying for what and who's wanting what. Like, did you know the average woman spends $10,000 on period products in their lifetime? And moving from a short acting to a long acting contraception could actually save women a few hundred dollars every year?

It’s a delicate topic, but Zoe and Carmel want to know more.
