Colby Carson : #YearOfTheVet Producer and Co-Host | Veterans Off-Grid

1h 14m · Published 31 May 20:21
#YearOfTheVet introduces the newest member of the family, Colby Carson. This guy’s parents are so f*cking American, that they wouldn’t let him play soccer because of asthma, but they signed the papers to let him become a United States Marine!
However like many service members, Colby’s military career was cut short by an unexpected event. Colby was released from the Marine Corps on a Humanitarian Discharge because he had to go home to his sick father, and a family that was falling apart fast without him being home. This was his ball and chain that kept him from making the Marine Corps a career. But it was also the life he had to face when he woke up daily, and soon when opportunity arose—Colby found himself contracting himself out to work in the realm of his previous MOS in the Middle East.

Fast-forward a few years—now Colby works for Sprint as a Global Mission Control Analyst, oh… and helps to build recognition of the non-profit that helps veterans live off the grid by building sustainable living in veteran built communities… called Veterans Off-Grid. A non-profit that offers 100% eco-friendly, zero-carbon footprint housing for homeless veterans. Veteran’s Off-Grid teaches communities of veterans the essential fundamentals of off-grid living, but the non-profit also focuses on building the individuals back up to reintegrate back into society. Building the homes is therapy; and that therapy is adding value to the homeless veteran population, regifting them with purpose, and giving them a second chance to succeed. And Colby shares how enduring a moment of fight or flight in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor ended up becoming a piece of the VeteransOffGrid.org website—figuring out that he has some writing talents which he learned about as he found himself writing to unwind from playing in the sandbox for the years he did.

Colby and I have developed a bond of brothers that can appreciate each other’s hustle and what each other stand for. We frequently keep in contact, although shamefully he more than I; and this bond was developed not through years of service together, but just recently through him having listened to the show and reaching out to see if I would have a conversation with him about a theory he has… and from there a bond was formed. Colby is proof that people listen—and I offered him the platform to talk about Veterans Off-Grid, but you know how I roll if you’ve been listening for a while… we’re going to get to know Colby and try to learn some lessons from another veteran’s transition to make ours a bit easier.

Never forget… Transition is Continuous.

This conversation is fun because he and I had been recording for shy over 35 minutes before you hear my voice, and when you have rapport with guests, conversations just flow a little better. Last thing… if you feel like Veterans Off-Grid is an organization that you can support or would like to get involved with—please reach out to Colby

Hector Cabrera - Air Force | Law Enforcement | CrossFit BOSS

2h 7m · Published 02 May 06:41
This very special episode is dedicated to our guest this week—Hector Cabrera. Hector served/serves in the Air Force, and during his day job—he makes people question if there are really people out there that are this nice.

I met Hector on my journey into USC Marshall, where we were classmates in the Sixth-Cohort of the Masters of Business for Veterans program; and what I learned from this conversation… the answer to that question is—yes. People are actually Hector kind of nice.

Coming to America when he was 8 years old, Hector lost everything he’d ever known as normal life. Hector quickly learned that to improve in life, he should mimic those who are doing well. And so he did… all the way to college… till the tragedy of 9/11.

Hector speaks very candidly about what it was like growing up in America and what patriotism and human kindness mean to him. He speaks about the process of improvement, and the keys to good living being forgiveness, servitude, humility, and gratitude. I can tell from the amount of shout outs he makes, that he is very much valued and appreciated in the lives of the people he comes across.

And you’ll soon see why.

Why this episode is special, is because I purposely waited to get Hector on the mic to get to know him. I knew we’d have a phenomenal conversation, and I got him right in time… because he had to leave our cohort to deploy to **OPSEC**. So as Cohort VI graduates this next week, I held this episode back from being published—so that Hector is with us as we walk the stage! FIGHT ON Hector! FIGHT ON MBV¬¬¬!

Jennifer Marshall - Actor | Vet Advocate | Pinup Model | Non-Stop Superstar

1h 35m · Published 09 Nov 11:00
From a small 3-Stop light town in Colorado, to the silver screen… Navy Veteran Jennifer Marshall is highlighted on this special Veteran’s day release of #YearOfTheVet!

By far one of my favorite conversations to date (even though I sounded like I was out of it the whole time), the #YearOfTheVet family is absolutely going to love this conversation with Jenn as much as I did—and soon you’ll realize why!

Given a pretty shitty and unstable foundation to build upon, Jenn fought to never be looked at as a zero, and because of that she’s a hero! Joining the Navy immediately after High School, Jenn’s military career looked promising until Jenn started to get the adverse reactions to the anthrax shot that was forced upon us right after 9/11. This Operational Iraqi Freedom veteran and at some point Junior Sailor of the Quarter set sails to Hollywood, California (see what I did there?), but not before educating her mind!

Jenn’s primary claim to fame is her face… and that’s not a sexist remark—Jenn lands roles for a living; and you may have seen her in some small productions you might miss if you’re not looking like Stranger Things, and Hawaii 5-0. She’s also been is some American classics like Poseidon Rex. Jenn’s busy. Let’s put this into perspective… She and I are mid-Thirties. She served her country, went to college—twice… volunteered teaching time abroad, volunteers all over California with 5 different groups, AND STILL has 57 acting credits to make up just a scratch of what Jennifer brings to the table.

Man, I tell you… This conversation is bananas, because I feel like we get as deep as we can while trying to fit in as many topics as we can, and we hit some pretty tight emotions! We cover everything from becoming a student veteran in a college that primarily doesn’t share the same views of the world, to the taxing process and emotional joy of adoption! We cover tricks of the trade on the Hollywood scene, as well as the selfish benefits of volunteering.

There’s even talk of drug addiction, and sexual abuse.

Jennifer Marshall came on the show and gave me her all, and I am grateful for her authenticity, and her ability to make me look good in this conversation! I’m honored that she came to share time with me for this conversation, and I hope that all women heroes out there have the opportunity to hear this episode of #YearOfTheVet and find strengths in your own stories, to own your voices like she has—and inspire those behind you!
