I Know My Body

33m · Published 14 Aug 07:00
Black lives matter. Three words: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. If you like you can abbreviate it to PCOS, but either way, let’s talk about it. Heather’s guest on this episode is Lianna LaBerge (@unsolicitedstyleadvice). She was diagnosed with PCOS five years ago. Upon learning this she felt relief, that there was some explanation for experiences she had dealt with for years. PCOS is an imbalance of hormones that causes cysts to grow on the ovaries. And it affects 1 in 10 people with ovaries, also known as ovarian humans. Maybe we just came up with that in this episode. One of the symptoms Lianna discusses with Heather is period irregularity, prompting them to compare first period stories. Another symptom is body hair that can grow where you might not ordinarily find it. You can imagine the effect that this kind of relationship with her body had on Lianna while growing up. Also in this episode, Lianna shares a piece she wrote about her anxiety. What you’re feeling is real. And also you. You are real. Thank you very much to Lianna for sharing with us. And thank YOU for listening. The production is produced by Heather Ann Gottlieb, Cameron Tagge, Alex Salem, and Tristen Bankston. The theme song vocals are vocalized by Natalie Sharp. The artwork is worked by Kevin Laughlin. The distribution is distributed by WhoHaHa.

Chemotherapy is the Worst Hangover of Your Life

36m · Published 07 Aug 07:00
Black lives matter. Knowing your family history is very important. It makes a huge difference should you have a higher likelihood for lymphoma. Heather's friend Joy Mamey (@joymamey) was diagnosed at age 28 after finding a bump on her neck, followed by two more. "I think it hits when it wants to hit." Joy spoke with Heather about the effects of chemotherapy. It's not great for pooping, or for appetite. Fortunately, there is weed. And just like any hangover, it is essential to hydrate! The whole experience brings many unexpected feelings as well. The reactions she received after losing weight were surprising, and Heather is here for shaved head solidarity. Joy has a new podcast! It is called Terrified Together. It's available on the platforms AS WE SPEAK. Thank you very much to Joy for sharing with us.

A Decade of Loud Sex

21m · Published 31 Jul 07:07
Black lives matter. What do white people need to be doing to change consciousness and truly support equality? Heather chats with Maury about protesting in Seattle's Capitol Hill Organized Protest, as well as quarantining with the first woman she has been in a relationship with...while at her parent's house. Along the way, Maury discusses attending her first pride parade as an openly gay woman, which was also a Black Lives Matter protest. Some of the pearls from this episode include: guilt is the least helpful place to put your energy into, and quarantine can take a toll on your sex life if you got roommates, ya dig? This episode was recorded while the CHOP was still in effect. Welcome to The Pink Umbrella Family.  Did we mention that today is just a PHENOMENAL day to arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor? You can send a message to the Attorney General of Kentucky on their website right here, and ask him to do just that. https://ag.ky.gov/Contact-Us/Pages/default.aspx  Thank you very much to Maury for chatting.  And thank YOU for listening. The production is produced by Heather Ann Gottlieb, Cameron Tagge, Alex Salem, and Tristen Bankston. The theme song vocals are vocalized by Natalie Sharp. The artwork is worked by Kevin Laughlin. Cody Heller's Feminist Sex Doll Has a Crusty P*ssy

1h 6m · Published 24 Jul 07:00
Black lives matter. Cody Heller is a baller who wrote for Wilfred, co-created Deadbeat, and co-executive produced Kidding. She just created Dummy (on Quibi) starring Anna Kendrick. And also she and Heather Ann are now best friends! No joke, if you have not seen this show yet, WATCH IT. Anna Kendrick plays a writer, named Cody Heller, who for real has adventures with her boyfriend's sex doll, played by Meredith Hagner. Heather Ann chats with Cody about the show, but also Cody's path as a writer and showrunner, sexual taboos, communication in relationships, discovering masturbation and orgasms, representation in Hollywood, being a better accomplice, and a VERY important examination of how a sound designer approaches the portrayal of a fart. And what's an episode of Dirty Girl without a good shitting of pants? THIS IS NOT A JOKE. If you want to check out Dummy (and why would you not?) but cannot afford Quibi, DM Cody on Instagram (@normalheller) and she will VENMO YOU A ONE-MONTH SUBSCRIPTION. So you have NO EXCUSE! Thank you to Cody for being a badass.

Whirlwind of F*ckery

43m · Published 17 Jul 07:00
Black lives matter. Get ready to feel the God presence folks. This episode finds Heather chatting with Tamara Perry (@t2thetam), Curator of Love and Purveyor of Magic. You may notice that a child never has to remind themselves that they are enough. They just go about their life knowing that they are. This observation, and several others, are part of the Magic purveyed by Tamara in this episode. She shares her experience of being biracial, understanding her sexuality, and finding her identity at 35. There is even a bona fide mic drop moment. Let's talk about sex, and how many folks may get the wrong ideas about it from the porn industry, when really it is a truly spiritual experience. Let's talk about our personal trauma, and our societal trauma, both of which need healing. Let's talk about moments of confusion, and moments of beautiful, beautiful clarity. A tremendous thank you to Tamara for sharing with us. And thank YOU for listening. The show is produced by Heather Ann Gottlieb, Cameron Tagge, Alex Salem, and Tristen Bankston. The theme song vocals are vocalized by Natalie Sharp. The artwork is worked by Kevin Laughlin. The distribution is distributed by WhoHaHa.

The View Through the Prism Called Hypnotism

24m · Published 10 Jul 07:00
Black lives matter. On this episode Heather listens to Diona. Diona shares some of her experience understanding the full reaches of white supremacism in mainstream culture. Why, as a young black woman, would she feel afraid of black men? To what extent have beauty standards and self-esteem been distorted by a white dominated media? Why was Damon Lindelof (and the talented writing staff of HBO’s Watchmen) responsible for the first time that so many people ever even heard about the tragic events in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921? Let’s continue doing the work of anti-racism, shall we? Diona is kind enough to remind us, that this has nothing to do with posting on social media just so you can say that you did it. “We can’t go back to normal. Because normal is shit.” If you missed it last week, a helpful resource is antiracismforbeginners.com Thank you Diona for the talk. And thank YOU for listening. The show is produced by Heather Ann Gottlieb, Cameron Tagge, Alex Salem, and Tristen Bankston. The theme song vocals are vocalized by Natalie Sharp. The artwork is worked by Kevin Laughlin. Out of The Office to Dismantle Systemic Racism

50m · Published 03 Jul 07:00
Black lives matter.   Let’s take a bird’s eye view. This episode is a conversation Heather had with Elena Muslar. A few weeks ago, Elena wrote an automatic out of office email reply, stating she would be taking the day off to “rest and recharge from the extra work [she] continue[s] to put in as a Black employee … trying to dismantle issues of systemic racism from within the walls of a predominantly white institution.”   At the same time, she blocked off the entire day of Juneteenth in her work calendar, a virtual calendar that co-workers had access to, and wrote that she would be required to use vacation time in order to take Juneteenth off. Why is this the case, she asked, when Juneteenth is the oldest celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in America, and should simply be a national holiday?   During this conversation, Heather asks Elena about something that happened when they were co-workers five years ago. Instead, Elena invites Heather to unpack it herself.   So. What have you done to help black lives today?   A helpful resource to look at is right here: antiracismforbeginners.com Thank you very much to Elena Muslar for taking the time and sharing. Elena is a Creative Career & Mindset Coach and Community Arts Consultant. She’s an educator for creatives looking to level up their personal development to enhance their professional ROI (return on investment), and confidant for entities who want to better connect with the communities they aim to serve.    @lelemariecreates www.elenamuslar.com   And thank YOU for listening. The show is produced by Heather Ann Gottlieb, Cameron Tagge, Alex Salem, and Tristen Bankston. The theme song vocals are vocalized by Natalie Sharp. The artwork is worked by Kevin Laughlin. Losing Your Mom to Alcoholism

36m · Published 26 Jun 14:03
Black lives matter. Do you ever think about a goldfish’s last memory? At the beginning of this episode, Chelsea London Lloyd  (@_chelswhoelse_) asks Heather what her goldfish moment was. The moment when she first became aware of death. Today marks ten years since the death of Heather’s mom. Heather was 17 at the time. A while back, Heather sat down with Chelsea for her podcast Dying of Laughter (@dyingoflaughter_podcast), where Chelsea talks to comedians who have lost a parent or sibling. Heather talks about her mom and her experience, and today we wanted to share that talk with you here as well. But go check out Dying of Laughter for the full-length version. That version includes bloopers. Please look at al-anon.org if you are experiencing something similar. You are not alone. Your pain is valid. Thank you to Chelsea London Lloyd for producing and editing this interview.

Poly Party Part 2

43m · Published 19 Jun 07:00
Black lives matter. WOW. You folks are in for a very insightful conclusion to our awesome panel of ethically non-monogamous badasses. In part two, Monica, Nicole, and Lauren offer more stories and experiences that involve in-depth self-reflection. And pay attention to how being honest about their feelings, as well as specific, is crucial to both understanding, and dealing with potential challenges. One of the primary topics in this episode includes undoing various types of cultural programming. In this discussion, that programming is in relation to preconceived notions about relationships and commitment. But we sincerely hope that right now, every white person reading this is on their own journey of self-reflection and undoing the programming of systemic racism. Other topics in this episode are family dynamics, hierachical and non-hierarchical non-monogamy, and the j-word. (You Gin Blossoms fans know what we're talking about.) A big thank you again to these three ladies for showing up and sharing. Just a reminder, Nicole's podcast is called Coming Out with Lauren & Nicole. And we hope to have our panel back again, possibly to discuss a different topic altogether! We would still love to hear a voice memo or audio recording about the dirtier parts of your quarantine experience. We hope you are doing alright. Email your stories to [email protected]. Thanks to everyone who has sent one in so far!
