Building the Foundations of a Future Franchise w/Cookeville’s Shane Ray - Ep 192 MMTBP

A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com

I met Shane Ray in 2017 through a local coaching program. We hit it off immediately and have been friends ever since! He’s replaced some of my AC units and maintained others. He has one of the most franchise-able brands I have ever seen and he’s finding his way to that eventuality.

From Shane:

“Hi, I’m Shane Ray, owner and founder of Aloha Air Conditioning. I grew up in the HVAC industry. I wanted to start and operate a company that would make customers say, "Wow!" My team and I maintain a culture of respect and generosity. Our philosophy involves treating customers and employees like family. We back up our promises with action and written guarantees.

I grew up in the area, and when I wasn't engaged in my unique hobby of reading, I spent time with my family learning about the HVAC industry. After graduating from high school in 1991, I started working for my family's HVAC business. Having served more than 25,000 customers, I've experienced every possible situation in a home. My family eventually sold that business, and I chose to continue to stay in the industry and provide my community with the products and services they need for indoor comfort."

A Brooklyn Legacy in Nashville w/The Maccas - Ep 191 MMTBP

1h 22m · Published 07 May 18:39

Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com

When we left Connecticut in 2001, we left the ability to get great New York-style pizza on a moment’s notice, from almost any pizza place.

In Las Vegas, it took us 3 years to find a place that came close, but still too far.

In the Middle Tennessee area, we had better luck. My friend John Tumminello introduced me to Joey’s House of Pizza, which was in Brentwood at the time.

Upon entering the restaurant, the sights, smells and thick New York accents brought me back to those days when we lived in the Northeast….the days when we took getting good pizza very much for granted.

I have been a champion of the Macca family ever since. When they opened a Joey’s House of Pizza in Spring Hill, you probably could have heard the celebration of joy coming from my house from several hundred yards away.

Joey’s eventually moved to Elm Hill Pike, and then, much to just about the entire community’s chagrin, closed with no prior notice. The Spring Hill store is still open but has also moved and changed their name to Nelly’s, which is operated by Joey and Crescenza Macca’s daughter and son-in-law, Danielle and Ryan.

The Macca’s aren’t done.

They’ve opened Macca Villa at Riverside in Murfreesboro, where you can still get your Joey’s House of Pizza fix as well as a beautiful property to have a wedding, celebrate an anniversary or have a really bodacious birthday blowout!

“Ciao, y’all!” - Perfectly said, from a Brooklyn born, deeply Italian family who planted roots in our backyard back in the 80s.

Maximizing Your Freelancing Career w/Nashville’s Steve Lomas - Ep 190 MMTBP

49m · Published 30 Apr 16:16

A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com

If you’re a freelancer in Middle Tennessee, this episode is a must listen!

I met Steve Lomas through my good friend and MMTBP regular, Amanda Banks. She saw the immediate connection Steve and I had in the creative space.

our conversation revolved around the challenges of finding reliable freelancers on platforms like Fiverr, the importance of networking and relationship building in business, and the evolution of the creative industry.

We discussed the value of personal connections in the broadcasting and content creation fields, and the need for onboarding and developing young talent.

Collaborating with skilled freelancers and the importance of building a strong foundation through basic strategies is also a strength. Just be aware of the nature between transactional and relational people, and the value of small gestures like buying coffee for others in building genuine connections.

The Art of Personal Branding w/Nashville’s John Mediana - Ep 189 MMTBP

1h 17m · Published 23 Apr 12:27

I met John Mediana at Jim Morris’ Impact Effect 23 in October 2023. He and I had an instant connection upon discovering that we both lived and worked in Las Vegas once upon a time, prior to moving to Middle Tennessee.

John has produced some impressive content for a myriad of equally impressive clients over his years in video production. He’s found a powerful niche within personal branding for executives in and around Nashville.

About John:

“Since the fifth  grade, I had a desire to create; I developed a passion for photography and the filmmaking process. I couldn’t wait for TBS’ dinner & a movie just to watch the behind the scenes and hear the director discuss the film. I never knew the relationship between the two. When I realized the connection between  photography and filmmaking, I began to wonder how my still photos would translate into motion picture form. I was shaped by the skateboard & hip hop culture growing up, and then started writing songs and playing in garage bands. At that moment, I started making things and discovering and exploring more. I started designing myspace pages for bands and creating EPK’s for artists my senior year of high school.

Throughout middle school and high school, I continued creating, which led to my acceptance at The Art Institute of California, Santa Monica.

I was in my own little world at The Art Institute until I started collaborating with talented, like-minded individuals which further led to groundbreaking projects. While I was working on collaborative passion projects, I continued to build my brand as a freelance photographer & filmmaker. The best part about where I am today is that my work both motion and still has gotten me here. They did and still do continue to open doors for me.

I’ve pursued my art education for a span of over 6 years and have directed and worked on countless industry projects, I can't wait to continue turning the page of this new chapter and seeing where the future takes me.”

Un-Squandered Opportunities and Healing by Faith w/Spring Hill TN’s Matt Rogers - Ep 185 MMTBP

1h 19m · Published 26 Mar 15:17

A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com

I met Matt Rogers at a BNI meeting a few years back. We’ve loosely kept in touch over the years, but once I had a podcast of my own, I knew I would have to have him as a guest!

In his mid-forties, Matt has packed some life under his belt. He’s been:

  • An 11th place contestant on the 3rd season of American Idol
  • An NFL player with the Cincinnati Bengals
  • A Radio and TV Host
  • A Professional Inspirational Speaker
  • An Entrepreneur
  • Tennessee Titans Stadium Announcer
  • Auctioneer

And then some.

To say that Matt has ever squandered an opportunity would be a very inaccurate statement!

Matt is also a very Godly Christian Believer. We delve into the notion that the world is in desperate need of God, the hypocrisy of today’s modern church, and how God isn’t really in control. As we approach Easter this weekend, I thought this episode would be quite timely.

Highlights:

Life experiences, music, and TV hosting. (4:12)

NFL players' financial management and trust issues. (15:33)

Parenthood, career goals, and finding peace in life. (20:17)

Jesus' existence and resurrection. (33:26)

Faith and healing among business leaders. (41:13)

Christianity and living a life of freedom in Jesus. (57:08)

Sexual abuse in Hollywood and seeking justice. (1:06:01)

What it’s Like to Walk the Entire Natchez Trace for Autism :: Nashville’s TN’s Brad Meshell - Ep 184 MMTBP

1h 10m · Published 19 Mar 15:55

A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com

I met Brad Meshell when I was recording podcasts at Jim Morris’ Impact Effect event in October 2023. He was one of the guests who was to have an episode recorded by me. When he told me that he walks the 444 mile Natchez Trace Parkway every year to raise awareness for the parents of children with autism, I was intrigued.  He gave me one of what I thought to be iconic blue 444 hats, which fit perfectly on my head….which is a rarity for me, as I have a larger than average cranium.

Brad started the non-profit after he and his wife learned that their son Jacob was autistic. The reason why he wants to help other parents in similar situations?

The isolation. The loneliness. The feeling of being “on your own” with coping with a new and tremendous challenge.

I wanted to have Brad on to share his incredible story and hopefully encourage you to contribute. He begins his walk on April 1 and spans the entire month.

From the Jacob’s Audible website:

“As parents, we knew Jacob was autistic by his 2nd birthday. We did not get a diagnosis until close to his 3rd birthday, which delayed getting help that much longer. I knew from raising my oldest that babies can do and say things a lot earlier than we think. Forget the milestone checklist. I knew from simply changing his diaper that Jacob was not connecting with me.

The rhythm of his babble was different. The eye contact was there, but the emotional expression was not. These signs showed up early when Jacob was a baby. The checklist screenings at his well checkups did not catch this. I was told not to worry. As a parent it really wasn't about the "worry." It was about making sure my child had what he needed to thrive.

This is where isolation can begin for many parents. Many start internet searching, which only funnels into longer waitlists for a diagnosis and getting your child the tools needed to develop and grow. The process and understanding of an autism diagnosis can be better.

This is why Brad and I are doing this. If telling our story helps another family, I will tell it over and over again. Welcome to Jacob's Audible. We are so happy you're here.

Together we can change the play.”

Highlights:

Walking 15 miles a day on a scenic highway. (4:25)

Ultra-running sponsorship and fundraising opportunities. (17:12)

Growing up in New Orleans with unique cultural experiences. (29:58)

Walking a 444-mile trace and marketing strategies. (49:56)

Autism acceptance and support for parents. (58:20)

Electrical Trade Challenges in TN :: Morristown TN’s Michael Burdette and Lauren Gamache - Ep 183 MMTBP

With one of my businesses (J2Lighting.com) being in the lighting manufacturing space, I reach out to a lot of electricians. Once upon a time, I was an electrical apprentice…I still am to a certain extent!

Over the last 4 decades, the talent pool for the trades has diminished. They were painted as a last option for kids in High School who just weren’t cut out for college…as if they would be relegated to a miserable life of using their hands and having a skill that could serve their families and provide a good living for many years.

Thanks to people like Mike Rowe, kids today are being exposed to the trades as a very viable and fulfilling route to a bountiful livelihood.

Michael and Lauren operate American Veteran Electrical Services, which focuses on helping Veterans and Civilians with their electrical services and requirements.

We discuss finding the right people to build an electrical business and the challenges that exist in Tennessee for a trade business.

They’re even starting an online course of sorts that will help people do their own surface level electrical work with Empowered Academy.

Highlights:

Electrical trade and licensing. (4:22)

Starting a business and marketing strategies. (12:16)

Business growth and talent acquisition in the electrical trade. (19:10)

Local SEO and personal branding for electricians. (24:28)

Franchising and running a successful electrical business. (32:16)
