When Reality isn’t Good Enough: Performing and Addiction with Magician Magic Mod (Ben Taylor)

57m · Published 14 May 10:00

Ben Taylor is a magician and has even appeared on Britain's Got Talent and toured with the likes of Paul Weller and The Libertines. He joins Dan to talk about his self-destructive relationship with alcohol and drugs and what lead him to become sober almost a year ago today. Ben and Dan also discuss the relationship between performing and addiction, the unique struggles of the early stages of going sober as well as the clarity and honesty that sobriety brings to your life.

CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Ben started magic at a young age alongside football. When he stopped playing football he fully put himself into his magic career and also began drinking.
  • Separating his true self, Ben Taylor from his stage self, Magic Mod was difficult, people often didn’t see Ben for his true self and that’s when the drinking started.
  • Performing on stage gives such a high, it can be very difficult to replicate and searching for the feeling often results in alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Touring with rock acts such as the Libertines left Ben feeling like he had a reputation to live up to and his addiction began to spiral.
  • Sobriety brings clarity but this can only come when you are honest with yourself and admit you have a problem.
  • It takes a lot to admit to others and yourself the mistakes you have made when you have been struggling with addiction, but you have to do this to be able to move forward with your life.
  • The beginning of sobriety has its own challenges, physically through chemical imbalances in your brain to the emotions that come with realising the bad things you have done.
  • Ben’s addiction got so bad that his partner told him to choose between alcohol and drugs and her. After this ultimatum and after having a disastrous performance, he made the decision to do the work to become sober.

BEST MOMENTS

“The beginning of sobriety is so hard”

“It’s 10% magic and the rest is patter”

“No one gave a fuck about who Ben Taylor is, that’s where the addiction started”

“By me caring what people thought of me almost fucking ruined me”

“It’s like reality wasn’t good enough”

“That band, The Libertines giving me that chance and that platform, forever they will be brothers to me”

“The maddest thing about sobriety is the clarity you get after”

“Mistakes are the only way we learn, try not to harbour that guilt too much”

You Can’t Be an Addict in Moderation with William Armstrong

48m · Published 07 May 10:00

William Armstrong is a sober coach and also someone that Dan first started following and taking inspiration from early on in his journey to sobriety. He joins the podcast to talk through his own journey to sobriety and reveals why being an addict is so dangerous but not for the reasons you might think, why the sobriety community is so important and why it took going sober for him to really start living his life.

CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Becoming sober opens up a new world, you begin to relate to completely different people and often it’s people who have faced similar difficulties as yourself.
  • As a teen William suffered from social anxiety, binge drinking offered a solution to this and this is when his problem with addiction began.
  • William tried cocaine with friends and discovered that the high it gave was even better than drinking and masked his anxiety even more, he saw it as a positive, it made his life better.
  • The difficulty with trying to limit your consumption as an addict is that you have to make that decision after already consuming some alcohol or drugs which essentially makes it impossible. You can’t be an addict in moderation.
  • As an addict you put yourself in dangerous situations again and again, becoming sober makes you realise how risky your past behaviour has been.
  • William was living in a world of indulgence, where excess was normalised, which meant he didn’t realise how bad his addiction had got.
  • The difficulty for William wasn’t not drinking or doing drugs anymore but what to replace them with.
  • When you hide your struggles it can then be difficult to open up about them to people as they don’t always believe you, they have only seen the face you have been putting on.
  • If you have become sober and want to help others, you can’t tell them what to do, you can only guide them.

BEST MOMENTS

“ When you go on a journey you get drawn to people that are on a similar journey, it helps you”

“I can see that you’ve been through something and you’re on the other side”

“I was drinking, high or hungover, that’s it”

“There’s such a disregard for your own safety”

“I know I’m never going to drink again because it’s not an option”

“When you hide it, when it becomes too much no one believes you”

ABOUT THE GUEST

William Armstrong

I stopped drinking back in May of 2018 so coming up to 5 years now.

I was working in restaurants, bars and hotels in London through my 20’s and for the final year was working in a private members' bar where I would party every night with the rich and famous.

One day after an all night binge on cocaine and tequila I was on my way to spend a relaxing weekend in the countryside with some friends who turned up fresh and I was still high.

That weekend opened my eyes to a different way of life and I decided to take a week off. It wasn’t easy but I did it and felt so good I decided to do 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I had a date where I decided to go back to it. The next morning I finally snapped and made the decision that I was done. Since that date I have dedicated my time to understanding and analysing my own behaviour with these substances and also how we use them as a society. I am now a sobriety coach and help others break free like I have in a positive, practical and logical way.

No One Chooses Addiction with Scaffolder Harry Tuffs

1h 15m · Published 30 Apr 10:00

Dan is joined by scaffolder and ex-addict Harry Tuffs in this episode. Harry made the decision to become sober aged just 22 and talks to Dan about how and why he went into recovery at such a young age, from drinking in the morning at 18 years old to standing at the edge of life and death on a bridge 4 short years later.

Dan and Harry talk about the drinking and drug culture young men have to face and the amplification of this found in many trade industries, particularly scaffolding. Harry then goes on to open up about his suicide attempt and is frank about how difficult it was to try and get the help he needed.

The guys also discuss the denial there is surrounding alcohol and drug abuse and what it took for them to realise they had a problem as well as why the clarity being sober brings is often the most difficult part of the journey.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Harry’s young heart was broken by Fulham when at the age of 15, after playing for them for 15 years, he was told he was too short. This is when his drinking began.
  • Harry enjoyed the effects of alcohol; it made him feel comfortable. It was after working with older guys that he started sniffing MKAT and along with taking this, his drinking accelerated.
  • Scaffolding and other trades that attract working-class men and are particularly hard work often go hand in hand with drinking and drug taking. This culture can be hard to avoid as a young person first starting out.
  • After earning a good wage, Harry moved on to cocaine use. At first, it was just to enjoy on a night out but before too long he was taking it before he went out and eventually taking it on his own at home.
  • Addicts attract addicts and this amplifies addiction and normalises drug and alcohol addiction in peer groups. Harry found that no matter where he went, he would attract what he calls ‘wrong’uns’.
  • Harry was miserable, but the people around him didn’t realise, he would always put on an act when in company, often behaving larger than life.
  • Harry reached out for help from his GP but was told there was no funding. It took Harry standing on a bridge contemplating jumping before he really got the help he needed.
  • The tough part of sobriety is the clarity it brings.
  • Addicts will frequently blame everyone apart from themselves for their behaviour, Harry recognises this in his own addiction journey, particularly towards his parents.
  • At his lowest point, Harry was having episodes of psychosis as well as feelings of complete despair, he just wanted to die.
  • Addicts will often ask themselves, if I don’t drink or take drugs what will I do? The answer is you will start to live your life.

BEST MOMENTS

“Any opportunity I wanted to drink, because I liked the effects of alcohol, I liked how it made me feel. It made me feel loose, it made me feel comfortable”

“When you’re an addict you attract addicts”

“If I was on my own I was miserable but as soon as I had company I was giving it the big one”

“For the first time in my life, I am sat there saying, help me”

“I just wanted to die, I just didn’t want to wake up”

“People say you have a choice, if I had a choice I wouldn’t have ended up where I was, there isn’t a choice”

“People don’t realise the strength it takes to go sober”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Harry Tuffs

My name is Harry Tuffs I am 26 years old, I have been clean and sober for 4 years. At the age of 16 I started working in construction as a scaffolder by the time I was 18 I was an alcoholic and using cocaine just to get out of bed in the morning.

Over the next 4 years drink and drugs slowly took away everything I had in my life until there was nothing left, the only option for me at the time was death, I truly wanted to die. As I stand on the edge of a bridge I prayed for help, I begged for something or someone to help me I was broken.

3 days later I ended up in a treatment centre where my road to recovery started!!

Today I sit here 4 years clean and sober, with a life beyond my wildest dreams!! Today i have a great knowledge of the illness of addiction and myself.

I am proof to every young man and woman out there that recovery is possible!”

Ambition Killed My Alcohol Addiction with Comedian and Podcaster Francis Foster

1h 14m · Published 23 Apr 10:00

Fellow podcaster and comedian Francis Foster of the Triggernometry podcast joins Dan to talk about his struggles with alcohol addiction and how he used his ambition to combat it. Dan and Francis also delve deep into the world of comedy and podcasting including being featured on the Joe Rogan podcast, cancel culture and how comedy has evolved in their lifetime and not always for the better.

An episode that really evolves through the hour and features segments on mindset, tips on dealing with addiction and ADHD as well as Dan talking about the time he passed to the other side!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Many comedians out there worry about older jokes from their past coming to light and running the risk of them being ‘cancelled’. No comedian is immune to the current cancel culture in comedy.
  • Francis was featured on the Joe Rogan podcast recently, Francis found Joe very inspiring and reveals that who you hear and see with Joe is the real him, he is authentic and giving to the podcasting space.
  • Comedians can struggle in the UK, many are too focused on being politically correct. The U.S has a very different comedic landscape, they seem to allow more free speech in comedy.
  • Francis believe being mixed race allows him to question British culture more, it gives him a unique perspective.
  • Evolutionarily speaking, it’s important we take notice of and remember threats. This is why negative press, comments and trolling online can be so hard to ignore.
  • It’s easy to be misrepresented, you need to be clear with what you say so that things you say can’t be misinterpreted or taken out of context.
  • Both Francis and Dan have ADHD, there are a lot of mental health struggles that come alongside this diagnosis but they both find that there are things they can do to help themselves, such as regular exercise and reducing mobile phone use.
  • Francis was the type of drinker that didn’t ‘need’ a pint but as soon as he had one he would struggle to stop and the aftermath the next day was incredibly difficult to deal with mentally.
  • Francis realised that to achieve the things he wanted to and be successful he could no longer have alcohol in his life.
  • If you really want to do something, you will do it. Francis believes if your motivation is powerful then you can and will give up your addiction and this is why he was able to become sober for 12 years.
  • Lad culture is detrimental for men in the UK and feeds into the widespread alcohol and drug problems found in our society.
  • What happens, happens to you but how you choose to respond to it gives you control. CBT is a form of therapy that changes how you view situations and is something Francis uses, it’s also the only form of therapy proven to work in this way.

BEST MOMENTS

“I just use stand up as my drug”

“You’re judging a 1992 joke by 2022 standards and that’s not fair”

“There is no difference between Joe Rogan the podcaster and Joe Rogan the host”

“The funniest comedy is when you say I can’t believe they just said that”

“Comedy is the blues for people who can’t sing”

“I couldn’t see any light, I couldn’t see any positive. I realised if I wanted to make something of myself, if I wanted to achieve I couldn’t have booze in my life”

“The amazing things you have achieved in life have come from ambition, from wanting to better yourself”

“I wanted to have a career in comedy and I wanted to be great in comedy. I just knew if I drank that would never be an option”

"My name is Francis Foster and I am a stand up comedian and co host of the Triggernometry Youtube show. We are about to hit 500K subscribers on Youtube and I appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience last year with my co host Konstantin Kisin.

I am mixed race and my mother is from Venezuela. I saw Venezuela become a communist country in 1999 and slowly collapse until we are now one of the poorest nations in the world. 96% of Venezuelans live in poverty and it is ruled by a brutal authoritarian dictator. My father comes from a working class background from the North West. This has meant that I have always felt like an outsider to some degree wherever I've lived.

I also have ADHD which has meant that I have struggled to function and have had issues with alcohol and weed in particular. I self medicated for a number of years as I struggled to get my career off the ground before quitting alcohol completely 12 years ago. My diagnosis and therapy have made it easier for me to function and become successful helping to build one of the UK's biggest and fastest growing UK podcasts."

From Gear to God with Pastor Mick Flemming

1h 2m · Published 16 Apr 10:00

In this episode, Dan is joined by Pastor Fleming, a former addict and ex-criminal who found spirituality and God after a series of pivotal moments in his life. Mick turned to criminality and drugs after suffering two traumatic events as a child and shares with Dan his life journey from this point, into drug abuse and criminality and eventually into healing, through the power of faith.

CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Mick was sexually abused on his way to school at just age 11, this is when he started to repress his emotions and didn’t cry again until he was 42. He turned to drink and drugs instead.
  • Mick’s criminal activity and attitude towards life was that if he was ‘soft’ he would get hurt so he did everything to be bad, as a form of protecting himself.
  • Eventually Mick turned to crack cocaine, which not only was expensive meaning he had to find risky ways to make money but it also started to make him psychotic, he became more unwell faster both mentally and physically.
  • A pivotal moment in Mick’s life was when he attempted suicide but failed, the gun didn’t go off, it made him believe that there must be a god and believe that maybe there was a different life out there for him.
  • Shortly after, Mick was sectioned into a psychiatric hospital. It was here he first started to talk about his abuse, and he realised he wasn’t alone. It was the beginning of his healing journey.
  • Mick believes that to find peace you need to live your life by Jesus’ teachings which are honesty, unselfishness, purity and love.
  • To heal you have to remove the anger and resentment that you feel. For Mick, he was able to give and surrender these feelings to God which enabled him to go sober.
  • To stay sober, you need to heal from the things that caused you to drink or do drugs in the first place or you will relapse. True healing, whatever form that takes for you, is the only way to long-lasting sobriety.
  • When Mick began helping others, he came across his rapist. He initially planned to kill him, but he couldn’t do it, instead, he helped him.
  • Sin is a state of existence, it never stops. Forgiveness is a choice but forgiving doesn’t make the original act ok either.
  • Mick has been able to spread his message, that people can be healed and get sober across the world via his book: From Drug Dealer to Life Bringer

BEST MOMENTS

“I wanted to be bad because I thought being soft would get you hurt”

“I’ve almost been killed twice”

“I believe there’s a power bigger than me”

“You’ve gone from gangster to sniffing decaff in a mental health unit..that was the beginning of my recovery”

“Sin doesn’t stop, his sin becomes your sin”

“The drink and the drugs are your friend”

“I’m not god, I’m not Jesus, I can’t save anybody but I have a message that can”

Accepting You’re an Addict; The Link Between Mental Health and Drug Use with Alex Drummond

53m · Published 09 Apr 10:00

Something a little bit different for this episode of the podcast, where Dan interviews Alex Drummond, from his men and their emotions group, to give the perspective of an ‘every day’ guy among the mostly celebs, professionals, specialists and social media influencers he usually speaks to.

They talk about Alex’s experience of addiction and becoming sober and how it has given him the tools to help other people. They also discuss the almost inevitability of drug and alcohol use becoming an addiction and why addiction is so common among men.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Societal expectations can make it more difficult for men to reach out when they need help, from struggling with addiction and mental health to just everyday life difficulties.
  • Accepting you are an addict is the first step needed to look for and acknowledge that you need help. The stigma attached to being an addict and simply the word itself can make this challenging.
  • Alex started using drugs as just a ‘normal guy’. At first, he could manage drug use and his life. But after experiencing loss and other trauma, his drug use escalated and that’s when his problems truly began.
  • From the outside, Alex’s life looked like it was good, his unhappiness and struggles were hidden and he was using drugs to cope with his emotions.
  • After starting to use crack, Alex lost all his businesses, became homeless, and was sectioned under the mental health act. He had hit rock bottom and it took all of this for him to seek the help he needed.
  • Almost all drug use accelerates. Everyone starts with a small amount and being able to cope with using and living an acceptable life, but at some point, it will accelerate.
  • After you become sober you gain a lot of clarity, part of that means accepting how bad your behaviour was when you were an addict and being honest with others and yourself about the hurt and damage you caused.
  • Figuring out the cause of your addiction is key. People use drink and drugs for a reason and until you can solve the cause of that you will struggle to become sober. For Alex, that meant accepting and facing his emotions and trauma.

BEST MOMENTS

“Acknowledging and admitting I’m an addict is it tells me what I now need to do…there’s a power in it”

“I was just a normal bloke who used drugs”

“I bottled up my feelings since I was a 10 year old boy, I learnt how to deal with not feeling emotions, when I got older, drugs used to numb the pain”

“I could not stop taking drugs, how could I be doing good in all areas of my life but this had me defeated?”

“I don’t feel comfortable with this feeling, I’m going to use drugs”

“The problem wasn’t with drink and drugs for me, it was my thinking and then the drugs became the problem”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Alex Drummond

“I'm 40 years of age, from Bethnal Green in East London, I'm currently working in technology event sales for a company called Inspired Business media.

I worked abroad for 4 years in Europe then moved to South Wales in 2003. I started running nightclubs and developed a heavy cocaine addiction for the next 15 years. I helped set up 4 businesses, grew them, became very successful, got married, had a baby through IVF after trying for 7 years.

My Mum died in 2013, I hit a brick wall and my using accelerated. Got kicked off as a director of my companies, got sectioned for my mental health, ended up in hospital with Sepsis, nearly died, split from my wife, wasn't allowed to see my daughter and was made homeless.

Ended up in Rehab for nearly 5 months, then came out and relapsed again and ended up street homeless again.

Finally on 1st June 2017 I found recovery nearly 6 years clean and sober. My rock bottom moment was trying to commit suicide again for the 3rd time and being devastated that I was still alive when I came round.

Now I have a beautiful relationship with my daughter, see her 3 days a week, have a beautiful partner, we love together, I have a great job with quality people and I get to help others in my life who are going through the same thing. “

The Mindset of a Drinker: Alcohol Explained with Author William Porter

1h 2m · Published 02 Apr 10:00

William is an ex-drinker and author, he joins Dan in this episode to talk about his first book, Alcohol Explained, a no-nonsense and practical explanation of alcohol; what it is, what it does and why we drink. As well as William’s book, Dan and William discuss their journeys to sobriety, their experiences of drinking and anxiety as well as the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • William was inspired to create his book Alcohol Explained, after reading the practical and pragmatic style in Alan Carrs book Easy way to Stop Smoking.
  • William started drinking at 14 but it was after signing up to the Army that his drinking really accelerated.
  • Another thing that further escalated William’s drinking was the pressure he felt after having children.
  • Drinking alcohol is culturally normalised. It’s the only ‘drug’ that is legal and seen as ok to take.
  • The sedative nature of alcohol is one of the reasons people reach for it first to help self-soothe. This is often where addiction starts.
  • Alcohol affects our brain chemistry in a whole host of ways, this is one of the reasons we experience anxiety and depression. It also impacts sleep which again, can cause many mental problems and well as physical.
  • The positives of stopping alcohol accrue over time, it can be hard to see the longer-term benefits when you first stop, especially as it’s been such a big part of your life.
  • Williams's book explains the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent, so it can and has been useful for those who don’t have a problem to read to understand people close to them who do.

BEST MOMENTS

“I think everyone drinks more as years go by but there were a couple of things that accelerated my drinking”

“You focus heavily on the things that are wrong the next day”

“The information is there but people, like you say, don’t want to hear it”

“If you feel really awful and you have a way to feel better, why is it irrational to take that?”

ABOUT THE GUEST

William Porter

After quitting I started to realise that what allowed me to quit was the knowledge I had, so I (eventually!) wrote it all down. That was Alcohol Explained. After this I continued to ponder the subject and wrote regularly in my blog, that eventually became Alcohol Explained 2.

I started drinking and smoking when I was around 14 years old. In my late teens, in an attempt to stop smoking, I read Allen Carr’s Easyway. I was fascinated by his pragmatic and practical approach to what was a confusing and complicated subject.

Over the years my drinking steadily increased but I continued to take a common sense analysis of what it was doing to me, coupled with a technical analysis of the chemical, physiological and psychological factors at play.

This continued for over a quarter of a century, during which I joined the 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, served a 6 month tour of Iraq, qualified as a lawyer, started a career in the Financial Services sector of the City of London, got married, and had children.

My drinking continued to increase until, in February 2014, I finally stopped for good. I now live with my wife and two children in West London, and continue to work as a lawyer.
