YBY ep 292: Morgan Phillips on music, improv, and going viral in your forties!

1h 33m · Published 06 Dec 05:50
In this week’s Yes But Why Podcast episode, I talk to Morgan Phillips, performer of improv and music since 1994.

Morgan Phillips is an improviser and improv coach based in New York City. He is the creator and temporary Artistic Director of Not A Bit Comedy Theater.

Morgan has been studying and performing improv on a regular basis for almost 30 years. He loves performing improv. In 2015, Morgan did online improv scenes with over 1000 improvisers. Morgan loves teaching improv. He taught at UCB NY from 2016 until March of 2020.

In our conversation, Morgan talks to me about temp jobs, acapella, and the New York City improv scene. Morgan loves to sing as evidenced by the multiple years singing in a professional acapella group. When he got into improv, he started with short form at Chicago City Limits. He says he liked their theater space and their focus on musical improv was a BIG plus as well.

Morgan talks to me about his experience with UCB NY. From taking classes to auditioning way too many times just to get onstage and then finally to be teaching in the conservatory, Morgan spent a lot of years at the NYC theater of Upright Citizens Brigade. We talked about it ending and how hard that can be when your community crumbles. I commiserated obviously.

And then he told me what it was like to go viral on TikTok in your mid forties. It sounds like fun, y’all.

We talk about some serious stuff here and there, but I swear we’re both hysterically funny, me especially, I mean Morgan, my guest. My guest Morgan was very funny.

Support Morgan by booking him to coach your troupe online. He can be anywhere, cause he’s on Zoom and Google Hangouts and he is a great coach and you should hire him! Also, check out his TikTok!

Kat has been showcased on the comedy docuseries “Cracking Up” on the Mental Health Channel, and the PBS show “Stand Up Empire”. YBY ep 288: Ammon Taylor on saving the world one musical at a time.

1h 42m · Published 08 Nov 05:18
This week on Yes But Why, I had the pleasure of speaking with pianist, composer, and music director, Ammon Taylor.

Currently based in Austin, Texas, Ammon Taylor is The Paramount Theatre’s Education Music Director and an active member of Austin’s theatre community. With a Bachelor of Music in composition from UT Austin, Ammon has been using his background in classical, jazz, and musical theatre to set children’s narrative inventions to music with Story Wranglers, and to create scores for improvised musicals on-the-spot with The Hideout Theatre’s house shows and troupes.

In our conversation, Ammon talks about how music has been part of his life since he was born. He tells me about his obsession with Beethoven at 9 years old and how that developed into playing in angsty rock bands when he was a teen.

Ammon tells me about moving out on his own to Seattle and then the world traveling adventures that followed. Later, he went to college at UT for music and we go down the rabbit hole of loving Austin. Then he tells me how he got so well connected in the improvised musical scene and how he is a music director full time now and how wonderful that is. We chat about deep feelings, jazz trios, and wanting to save the world.

Support Ammon Taylor by support The Paramount in Austin! And by checking out Ammon’s most recent musical project to save the world, Rites of Warming.

YBY ep 287 Elena Weinberg and Duncan Coe on being quirky, confident, and creative!

1h 21m · Published 01 Nov 05:22
This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I reconnected with writer/director Elena Weinberg. I also got the opportunity to sit down and chat with Elena’s husband and creative partner, writer/actor, Duncan Coe!

Elena Weinberg is an actress, writer, director, producer, and production manager. She has made quite a few independent films alongside Duncan Coe with their production company, TurtleDove Films. Elena is known for her work creating the webseries, #ATown and directing the movie, A Room Full of Nothing. A few films she has recently produced, Dancers(2021), Between the Trees (2021), and A Grievance with Gravity (2020), are currently doing the rounds at film festivals all over the country.

Duncan Coe is an actor and director, known for The Long Road Home (2017), I'll Come Running (2008) and A Room Full of Nothing (2019). Duncan is the co-owner of TurtleDove Films and a freelance screenwriter and film editor. Duncan is the writer and lead actor in the feature film, A Room Full of Nothing. You can also see him in the music video for Dearly Departed by Shakey Graves.

I am a big fan of Elena and Duncan and the beginning of this interview is a bit of fangirling for me. Elena and Duncan as TurtleDove Films made #ATown, a two-season webseries about feminism, friendship and fucking up in Austin, TX. It won Best Webseries in the Austin Chronicle in 2015. During our chat, I reminisced about how that show opened my mind to what a web series could really be.

The last time I chatted with Elena was at #AFF26 to promote the movie she directed called “A Room Full of Nothing.” It was nice during this interview to talk to Duncan about it too since he wrote and co-starred in it.

In this conversation, we talk about writing and what it means to be a writer. We talk about imposter syndrome and feeling like you’re not really a writer even though you do, in fact, write. Elena talks about how she wrote her current feature, Sunset Lanes. Duncan discusses his folder packed with script ideas. Elena and Duncan compare and contrast their writing styles.

We chat about the importance of financial stability for artists and how having a day job can really take a lot of stress out of making independent films. We talk about developing confidence, about learning to edit movies, and about the effect the pandemic had on their filmmaking.

I had a really great time talking to these two artists, least of all because I admire them both so much. And my big takeaway is that if filmmakers that are prolific and amazingly talented can have doubts about their art, it’s okay for the rest of us to have them too. And that, to me, is incredibly comforting. We’re all in this together.

Support Elena Weinberg and Duncan Coe and TurtleDove Films by checking out their upcoming films being featured at film festivals! You can also support Duncan and Elena by watching A Room Full of Nothing and #ATown. They also make content for Goodr so support that company as well! And if you ever see their names attached to a project, go for it. These two are the real deal and someday I’m going to pretend that we’re better friends than we are to look cool at a party.

1h 19m · Published 17 Oct 02:30
This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I showcase my talk with comedian and filmmaker, Jer Moran.

Jer Moran is a filmmaker and cartoonist based in Austin, TX. He has written and directed various short films and his work has been shown at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival, Austin Comedy Film Festival, Austin Micro Film Festival, and GELOS Comedy Film Festival.

He performs as one half of the Gothic musical improv duo “House of the Bleeding Chicken” and he is also a member of the Fallout Theatre sketch troupe, “The Floor is Lava.”

In our conversation, Jer tells me about his obsession with cartoons as a kid. Jer loves “Rocko’s Modern Life” as well as the Hanna Barbera oeuvre. We talk about the artists who have creatively influenced us. Jer names weird and provocative animator, Bill Plympton as one of his inspirations. He also gushes about his love for the movie, “Pig Death Machine,” and its punk rock creators, Jon Moritsugu and Amy Davis.

We gab about the craziest performance art pieces we have been a part of and also those we witnessed. Jer shares how he got into performing a form of musical improv he calls “gibberish opera.”

Jer and I discuss how it can be lonely to create art. I deeply commiserate with him about how tough it can be to find collaborators that match your level of excitement and dedication. Jer tells me about the films he has created and his method for getting it all done.

YBY ep 283: Travis Charles Ploeger of iMusical and his lifelong love affair with music!

1h 32m · Published 04 Oct 04:23
This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I present my chat with Travis Charles Ploeger, the director/founder of Washington Improv Theater's longest running ensemble, iMusical: The Improvised Musical.

Over the course of his career, Travis Charles Ploeger has helped to create and perform over 2,000 improvised musicals to audiences across the country. He joined Washington Improv Theater and created iMusical in 2006, after an eight-year career as the music director and pianist for Chicago City Limits in New York City. As a director/performer in NYC, Travis was a founding member of “I Eat Pandas,” with Eliza Skinner and Glennis (McMurray) McCarthy; and, he performed on the stages of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, People’s Improv Theater and Magnet Theater

In our conversation, Travis tells me about his lifelong love affair with music. The guy’s first word was piano; It seems predestined that he’d be performing music throughout his life.

Travis tells me that when he found musical improv, he felt like he had finally found his niche. He loves performing. He loves spontaneous songwriting. He learned so much in his foray as musical director for Chicago City Limits.

Travis shares that CCL and his NYC improv community gave him the confidence to create his own show, so when he moved to Washington DC, he did just that. He created iMusical and he has been running that show for 15 years now. Travis gives some great advice about what it takes to maintain a show for that long.

This was a great chat with improviser, pianist, music director, songwriter, composer, and performer, Travis Charles Ploeger. Support Travis by going to see iMusical! They are performing on October 9th as part of A DASH OF WIT at Atlas Performing Arts Center! Come out and support Travis and his Washington Improv Theater team!
