Abroad&Risng, Episode 4

Ally immigrated to Canada with her parents when she was 13 years old. She was the type of Asian kid who was good at math and got straight-As. She considers herself a banana smoothie who is integrated into the Western culture but also values her Chinese heritage. Ally worked hard during her undergraduate studies at McGill University, and she had a goal of becoming a physician. However, soon after her graduation, she received a life-changing, shocking diagnosis of leukemia. Cancer has been the most challenging thing she ever had to face in her life, but she strived to be an 'exceptional patient' during her treatment. Just recently, she celebrated her two-year anniversary of cancer remission. As a young 20-something-year-old, Ally has been very motivated in her self-development. She is now embarking on a new journey of cancer research to use her own experience to help leukemia patients and their families.

Hatem Mahbouli came to Canada from Tunisia in 2007. After a short yet enjoyable internship in Canada, he returned to Canada and did his master's study on computer science security. While studying, he did a number of internships to pay for his living expenses due to a sudden loss of funding. Different from many graduates, Hatem built a career path that has little to do with his university major. He is currently working as a solutions architect and his past working experience paved the way to get where he is now. As an immigrant, Hatem values open-mindedness, and he's been striving to learn from others and gain an enriching life experience.

Angela came to Canada in 1997 from China. She wanted to have a second child and get a degree from a North American university. She did both! She raised two excellent children as a single mom who considers self-care and self-love an essential part of life. Angela takes self-development as a daily practice. She builds positive, healthy habits which help her tackle obstacles in life. She believes in lifelong learning and she uses the quote from Oprah Winfrey as her life motto: “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment”.

Alain Guillot is from Colombia, and he moved to Canada with a dream of becoming a financial banker. After completing his study in Finance in Montreal, he got a job as a financial advisor. He hated it and quit the job. Since then, he has been self-employed. He was a dance teacher, owner of multiple rental properties, money coach, photographer, blogger and podcaster. Alain has been devoted to self-improvement, learning new skills, and leveraging his strengths in his professional life.
