In this episode, Heidi and her husband Ryan have a conversation about the 5 elements of an environment of growth and how they continue to work toward consistently practicing all five in their own lives.

An environment of growth is defined as a safe space to learn and grow.   

All human needs come back down to the basic need for safety and security. The opposite of safety is overwhelm.

When we create an environment of growth the outcome is presence.

With a sense of safety, the present moment is experienced, and it's only in the present moment that true transformation happens.

The Five Key Elements: 

  1. Control/Choice
  2. Compassion/Patience (it’s ok to make mistakes)
  3. Curiosity/Humor (beginner's mind)
  4. Consistent Connection (Co-regulation)
  5. Optimism (There is a gift in everything)

21. You Are Never Alone with Nichole Mischke

This week I am talking with my friend Nichole Mischke. For Nichole, sharing OTHER people's stories always came easy. She studied broadcast journalism and expected to have a lifelong career in the news business. However, in finally finding the courage to share her OWN story, a secret she had kept from everyone in her life for nearly a decade, she realized a vision for the stories she was meant to tell. In 2018, Nichole left her job in news to launch a media and storytelling platform called UNCOVERED.

UNCOVERED seeks to set people free through the power of owning and sharing your story. Nichole and her team produce short documentaries about people who have overcome toxic shame or some sort of struggle in their life with the intention to inspire hope, healing, and let people know that even amidst your greatest struggle or most shameful secret, you are not alone.

In this episode we discuss: 

  • How owning your story can not only set you free but also inspire others to share theirs and help many more to feel less alone. 
  • Nichole shares openly about the resistance she faced when making the decision to share her own story in public. 
  • You may be surprised by how many people in your social circles, friend groups, and family have experienced something or are currently going through something similar to what you are keeping a secret. 
  • We receive a lot of mixed messages about what it means to be "healthy", "successful" and "beautiful" in today's world which adds to the unnecessary shame and ultimately suffering many of us go through.

20. Owning Your Inner Authority with Misty Springer

In this week's episode, I chat with my dear friend and fellow coach Misty Springer all about owning your inner authority. This was such a fun conversation where we both shared so much from personal stories and examples of our own struggles and past limiting beliefs/ patterns to the science behind feeling sensations, thoughts, unconscious thoughts, and beliefs.

  • Owning your inner authority by learning to listen to your body and giving yourself permission to be on your own path.

Heidi talks with Heather Hart a licensed Mental Health Counselor and Founder of Kalm Learning.

  • How Heather got into working in mental health and ultimately how she decided to take the leap and start her own business, Kalm Learning. 
  • The missing piece she discovered through talking with clients dealing with anxiety. 
  • How to cultivate a sense of calm and inner safety within ourselves using simple techniques. 
  • Kalm Learning will be providing the community with meditation retreats in the near future to practice mindfulness in nature with highly trained professionals to support building and fostering a healthy community.

    Heather holds a B.A. in International Studies and has traveled around the world. She went back to school in 2015 and received my Master’s in Social Work from USC. She is currently a  am a licensed mental health counselor specializing in trauma. Heather utilizes somatic modalities such as EMDR and ego state therapy to assist our Spokane community in healing. 
     
    She created Kalm Learning to support individuals and guide them through moments of daily stress and anxiety by utilizing handmade elements and helpful tools. Her Kalm kits fill the gap between your busy workday and that need for mindful moments as you move through your day.
