A urologist’s perspective on incomplete bladder emptying

Dr. Wiegand joins us today to share one of his goals as a urologist; restoring and/or creating natural urinary habits for his patients, while keeping the urinary tract healthy. In this episode, Dr. Wiegand spends time discussing urinary retention, incomplete bladder emptying, mechanical as well as surgical options, and the importance of patient compliance. Dr. Wiegand also provides tools for instructing patients on intermittent catheterization for complete bladder emptying.

Guest bio: Dr. Lucas Wiegand is a board-certified urologist with Orlando Health Medical Group Urology specializing in reconstructive urology. Sought after for second opinions and complex case referrals, he strives to communicate honestly and directly with his patients to help put them at ease and achieve their goal of returning to their normal lives.

Dr. Wiegand earned his medical degree and completed his urology residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. He was chief resident his final year. Dr. Wiegand performed his fellowship in reconstructive urology at Washington University in St. Louis, where he supervised residents in general urology and reconstructive urologic procedures. He serves as assistant editor of the Video Journal of Prosthetic Urology. He is the author of several medical textbook chapters and is a frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Wiegand is board-certified by the American Board of Urology. His professional memberships include the American Urologic Association, Florida Urological Society, and the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons.

Her role as a WOCN nurse also includes teaching at the Rupert B Turnbull's School of WOCN Nursing and she is a regular contributor to Phoenix magazine, the official publication of the United Ostomy Associations of America.

Resources for ostomates

 In the fourth and final episode of this special series featuring Josh Nelson, he shares his perspective on resources for ostomates. Josh also discusses which specific resources were helpful to him on his journey.  

Guest bio: Josh was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in November 2017.  He was evaluated by Inflammatory Bowel Disease experts from Rochester Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota Medical Center.  After failing maximum medical therapies, it was determined to surgically remove his colon in November 2018.  In February 2019, the final surgery was completed making his ileostomy permanent.  Since the decision to remove his colon, his health has returned, requires zero medication, no specialized diet, and no further complications from Ulcerative Colitis. He is a member of the United Ostomy Association of America and the Ostomy Association of the Minneapolis Area.  He participated in the 2019 Ostomy Awareness Day 5K hosted by Coloplast and has participated in Coloplast sponsored events.

UTI Risk Factors Model: Part 1

Join us as Dr. Lewis describes the UTI Risk Factors Model & discusses how the tool can be used for both neurogenic and non-neurogenic patients, primarily in the adult female patient population. 

Guest bio: Dr. Tamra Lewis holds board certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and she currently practices at Comprehensive Urology in Chicago, IL.  

Dr. Lewis received her B.A. in Biology from Luther College in 1994, and she obtained her Medical Doctorate in 1999 from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Lewis completed her Surgical and Urology residencies at the University of Nebraska and then went on to complete a fellowship in Female Urology and Voiding Dysfunction at Metro Urology in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. 

Dr. Lewis’s professional interests include management of incontinence, voiding dysfunction, bladder prolapse, and urinary tract infections. She is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, the Society for Women in Urology, and The Chicago Urologic Society, where she currently serves as President. Dr. Lewis has been an invited speaker or presenter for numerous events on topics including incontinence, overactive bladder, hematuria, and urinary tract infections.

Living and active lifestyle with an ostomy

In part three of Josh Nelson's journey, he shares with Coloplast employee Sara Wharmby how he began to live an active life now that he has a permanent ostomy.
