Saint Paul Miki & Companions (Feast Day - February 6th)

9m · Published 06 Feb 05:00

Twenty-six men were tortured and then forced to walk more than 300 miles from Miako to Nagasaki through snow and ice and freezing streams. Along the way they preached to the people who had come out to see them. They sang psalms of praise and joy. They prayed the rosary and told the people that such a martyrdom was an occasion of rejoicing, not of sadness. Finally, on February 5th, they reached Nagasaki, where twenty-six crosses awaited them on a hill now called the Holy Mountain. It is said that the Christians ran to their crosses, singing. Soldiers bound them to the crosses with iron bands at their wrists, ankles, and throats. Then they thrust them through with lances.

Saint Agatha (Feast Day - February 5th)

6m · Published 05 Feb 05:00

When asked why she lived the servile life of a Christian, she answered: "I am a handmaid of Christ, and that is why I bear the outward appearance of a slave; yet this is the highest nobility, to be a slave to Christ." The governor threatened her with the most dreadful tortures if she did not renounce Christ. Agatha countered: "If you threaten me with wild beasts, know that at the Name of Christ they grow tame; if you use fire, from heaven angels will drop healing dew on me."

Saint Blaise (Feast Day - February 3rd)

6m · Published 03 Feb 05:00

In front of the governor during his final hearing he states, "You punish my body, but there is nothing you can do to my soul. If he wished, my God could snatch my body from your hands. His will be done."

The Governor responds, "Do you think he could save you, if I had you drowned like cat in a pond?" Thereupon he orders Blaise to be thrown into a nearby lake. All are astonished to find the waters remain frozen like ice, unwilling to be an accomplice in the death of this holy man.

Saint John Bosco (Feast Day - January 31st)

7m · Published 31 Jan 05:00

John spent so much time working that people who knew him well became worried about his health. They said he should take more time for rest and sleep. John replied that he’d have enough time to rest in heaven. “Right now,” he said, “how can I rest? The devil doesn’t rest from his work.”

St. Thomas ranks among the greatest writers and theologians of all time. His most important work, the Summa Theologiae, an explanation and summary of the entire body of Catholic teaching, has been standard for centuries, even to our own day. At the Council of Trent it was consulted after the Bible.

Saint Angela Merici (Feast Day - January 27th)

7m · Published 27 Jan 05:00

Women like St. Teresa of Ávila and St. Catherine of Genoa contributed significantly to the Catholic Reformation. But in the 16th-century church perhaps no woman responded more creatively to the need for reform than St. Angela Merici. She built communities that trained single women in Christian living and provided them a secure place of honor in their local societies.

Saint Titus (Feast Day - January 26th)

4m · Published 26 Jan 05:00

St. Titus was born a Gentile, and seems to have been converted by St. Paul, who calls him his son in Christ. His virtue and merit gained him the affection of the apostle, for we find him employed as his secretary; and Paul styles him his brother and partner in his labors, commends his zeal for his brethren, and expresses the comfort he found in him, in so much that on one occasion he declared that he found no rest in his spirit because at Troas he had not met Titus.

Saint Timothy (Feast Day - January 26th)

5m · Published 26 Jan 05:00

In the year 52, Paul and Silas took Timothy along with them on their journey to Macedonia. Augustine extols his zeal in immediately forsaking his country, his house, and his parents, to follow the apostle, to share in his poverty and sufferings. Timothy may have been subject to ill health or "frequent ailments", and Paul encouraged him stating, “Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”

The Conversion of Saint Paul (Feast Day - January 25th)

6m · Published 25 Jan 05:00

Entrusted with a formal mission from the high priest, Saul of Tarsus departed for Damascus to arrest the Christians there and bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he was nearing Damascus, about noon, a light from heaven suddenly blazed round him. On the road to Damascus, Saul had an encounter with the Risen Jesus Christ. Jesus asked, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Saul replied, “Who are you, sir?” Jesus responded, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting”.  This encounter would determine his theology for the remainder of his life

Blessed Henry Suso (Feast Day - January 25th)

5m · Published 25 Jan 05:00

Early in his life, Suso subjected himself to extreme forms of mortifications; later on he reported that God told him they were unnecessary. During this period, Suso devised for himself several painful devices. Some of these were: an undergarment studded with a hundred and fifty brass nails, a very uncomfortable door to sleep on, and a cross with thirty protruding needles and nails under his body as he slept. In the autobiographical text in which he reports these, however, he ultimately concludes that they are unnecessary distractions from the love of God.
