TRANSCRIPT :
Niloo: Hello guys, Welcome to English to live with me, Niloofar Zaker and my dear brother Hamid Zaker.
Hamid: Hello everybody, I am glad to have joined English to live Podcast
Niloo: Great, first of all, I would like to introduce you to my dear guest.
He has been teaching English for about 10 years and he has got his master’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Hamid : Yea, thank you, I have seen many students who are eager to learn English, and I would be happy to help them improve their English by this podcast.
Niloo : good , so today we want to talk about Wh questions in the IELTS Speaking test.
Hamid can you tell us about Wh questions and its basic rules?
Hamid: Yeah , well Wh-questions begin with what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why, and how. We use them to ask for information. The answer cannot be yes or no:
Fore example when someone asks you,
Who is your favorite actor? You cant answer it with yes or no , instead, you should say a name.
For example: Who is your favorite actor niloofar?
Niloo:
Oh such a tricky question. ummm I have a lot of favorite actors, I think Chris Hemsworth is the first one, oh no maybe Decaprio, or Johnny Depp. I don’t know I love all of them.
Hamid :Okay, here are more examples
Where do they live?
How old is your dog?
Hamid: Remember. When you have what, who, which or whose as subjects you do not use an auxiliary verb.
Niloo :So you mean for example. Which horse won? Here we do not use did and which horse did win is wrong because the horse is the subject here. right?
Hamid : yeah. exactly but when we use the negative form of wh questions, we should have an auxiliary verb. For example: Who wants ice cream?
Niloo :And the negative form should be , who doesn’t want an ice cream, yes?
Hamid: yeah that’s right.
Niloo : so Hamid can you tell us what is the best way to answer a wh question in our IELTS exam?
Hamid :Sure .First of all you should pay attention to the wh question word.
If it is where you should talk about a location.
Or if it is when you should talk about time.
Wh questions are the most important part of your IELTS Speaking test.
Niloo: especially part 2 , yes?
Hamid: yeah On the cue card we have some questions like talk about the last movie you saw, and then we have some questions like what was its name, who were the famous actors in it . and when did you watch it?
Hamid: In this part, students should give the necessary information, but they can extend and give more information and that is totally okay to fill the 2 minutes' time.
Niloo: can you give us some strategies to use for such questions in IELTS Speaking to get a higher score?
Hamid: Well, there are some quick, small but really effective tips that show your ability to speak fluently in your IELTS exam.
As you know there are a lot of wh questions in the first part of your speaking test.
For example: Where do you live? What is your favorite dish? or when was your last shopping? sometimes it is hard to find the exact information and we need to think about it .
Niloo : yes for example if you ask me when was the last time I went shopping, honestly I would say I should think about it or I do not remember, especially because of this COVID 19 that made us stay at home for a long time.
