Wasting time thinking about why you don’t want to fail?

“If you want to be successful, why are you wasting time thinking about how much you don't want to fail?” It was a simple question that changed how I approached business and life. Fear of failure is very powerful, but what’s more powerful is fear of success.

When I support my clients in their ability to achieve more in life, I ask them what's going through their mind that's preventing them from going after it, whether it’s talking to that attractive person, sending that email to a potential investor or even going to the gym. Among their responses is often, “Well, I don't know what to say" or “What if she doesn't like what I have to say?" People bombard themselves with “what ifs.”

I get it, all these scenarios could possibly happen, but the truth is they haven't yet. Nevertheless, the uncertainty around these “what ifs” takes away your courage and confidence to go and make that move, even knowing it could level up your business and life.

Let me explain why this happens and what you can do about it.

I’ve been doing this for 25+ years and I wanna’ quit

I gotta be honest with you. These last couple weeks have been TOUGH ones.

It was a couple of those weeks that we all have from time to time as entrepreneurs. Even after 25 years.

I ended up getting Covid a couple weeks ago and spending time quarantining to the bedroom for what seemed like an eternity. I had no energy to do any work and as I laid there all I could do was watch tv or think - which can be good and bad.

I wasn’t stressed about not being able to work, but the more time that I wasn’t working in my business the more my thinking started going south and I found myself thinking about getting a job.

Today I'm being very transparent about those feelings and what I did ...

When it comes to building your business, do any of these sound familiar - (maybe they all do)?

“I’ve got to join as many Facebook groups related to my niche as I can.”

“But wait, is my niche narrow enough? Maybe it’s too narrow. Or maybe it’s too broad? I don’t know!”

“Ugh, I hate marketing. I just want to coach. But I know I have to, so I’ll hop on this Facebook Group, offer advice and see what happens.”

“Shoot. That’s not working. Maybe I’ll post some things on Instagram. I’ve got this great inspirational quote I can use.”

“Should I go on LinkedIn? Or maybe I should run some Facebook Ads. But those are so expensive and I have no idea what I’m doing.”

“I just want to help people and not have to do all this other stuff.”

 

The result of all of these thoughts?

Overwhelm. Confusion. Frustration. The powerful urge to clean out and organize your closet instead!

How To Take Imperfect Action

Have you ever been able to edit something before you've actually written a word?

Have you ever tried being more clear, or more thorough in your explanation without ever saying anything?

Or have you ever tried to make a system work without ever implementing a thing?

I know what you’re thinking … duh, Jill.  That’s not possible.

Yet I see it all the time.

It's the story we tell ourselves about researching, about thinking, about preparing.

We think that with more research or more thinking we’ll be able to get it right. We think that reading or learning from experts is being productive when really, we learn by doing.

PERFECTIONISM WILL SLOW YOU DOWN. THE SOLUTION IS TO TAKE IMPERFECT ACTION.

Which is more precious ... Time or Money?

The time vs money debate is a hot one.

 

As I was preparing for this episode, my head was spinning from the articles I was reading.  One standing firm in that time is limited and you only have 24 hours in a day, so it’s more precious than money.

 

Another standing firm that money is your most precious resource because it will buy you time and save you time on other things.

 

Funny thing though … I agree with both.

Have you watched the movie The Founder with Michael Keaton?

It’s all about McDonald’s—the hundred billion dollar company that’s arguably responsible for systematizing the fast food industry.

The McDonald’s franchise works in a way that anyone can go in and implement their exact proven system, and they’ll have a high chance of succeeding. They can also hire almost anyone to work in any McDonald’s kitchen and following a systematic set of procedures, that person can produce the same food every time.

You don’t have to be McDonald’s or some other huge corporation to utilize systems.

A system is a set of processes, tools, people, and strategies that all work together to solve a problem or achieve a goal.

Seriously, it’s no secret systems and SOP's aren’t exactly the sexiest of business topics.

BUT if you are someone who doesn’t have those things in your business and had to learn the hard way how much your business really, really, really needs those things…
