23: The Kerry Babies Tragedy with Ger Staunton

1h 10m · Published 29 May 05:00
It was a Saturday morning when a local man out jogging on White Strand in Cahersiveen, Co Kerry, made the grisly discovery of the body of a baby boy.

The date was April 14, 1984, and the infant was confirmed to be dead. He had been stabbed multiple times before he was put in a plastic bag and left on the beach, just outside Cahersiveen. What would ensue would prove to be one of the most important socio-political moments in Ireland’s modern history, a moment when accusations of infanticide abounded, sexual histories became media fodder, women’s rights were placed at the fore of a judicial inquiry, and fantastical Garda theories came thick and fast.
