Episode Summary

Said El Kadi had an interesting experience in the fall of 2022. He was the keynote speaker at the NESA Leadership Conference held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This is a space usually reserved for the Who’s Who of educational consultants and school leaders in the international school community. This time though, they selected a student and any who were in attendance would tell you they made the right choice. Said grew up attending international schools in Cairo and Beirut and is currently in his first year as an undergraduate at Harvard University. You might’ve heard of it. In our conversation, Said talks about how it was his community involvement, not academics, that led him to where he is today and really shaped his life so far. Join me as we look at how passion and drive for change can be transformed into sustainable policies that improve our communities, and how involving students is such an important part of shaping our desired future.

We discuss their experiences honing their interview skills, drawing on pre-existing tools from narrative writing, and utilizing active listening to successfully amplify the stories of people in their community who often go unnoticed, and are quietly having an impact in their daily lives. What stories might we uncover in our own communities if we take time to stop, engage and actively listen?

Sophia, my guest this week on the podcast, is a senior at BCIS in Beijing. At the time of recording, she was wrapping up her sophomore year and we discussed her personal project for MYP. Sophia is passionate about wellness and feels that students don’t always have access to the information and services they need to support their physical and mental health. She recognized this authentic community need and partnered with a migrant children’s school in Beijing to develop a workshop for young students there. Join us as we celebrate the successes of this project and how a further connection with Peking University and an opportunity at her own school might lead to greater impact as this work continues.

Episode Summary
My guests on this episode are Bloomy and Mig, two seniors attending the International School of Bangkok. You might be interested in hiring them to lead your next corporate retreat. Participating in a program co-designed by Inspire Citizens along with the student-leaders themselves, they created a portrait of a leader that included skills and dispositions like empathy, critical thinking, active listening, interpersonal skills, and more. They then went through a series of workshops led by Inspire Citizens to bring this portrait to life within themselves. From there they took what they learned and applied it to their leadership roles in clubs and councils across the school. Most recently, with the support of a dedicated group of teachers at ISB, they led their own leadership workshops to build capacity within the school and empower the next student-leaders who will succeed them when they graduate. Book a call to learn more about how Inspire Citizens might support student-leaders at your school.

  • Learn more about Toilet Twinning
  • November 19 is UN World Toilet Day
  • You can book a discovery call with Inspire Citizens at this link
  • #EmpathytoImpact

Episode Summary
As we approach UN World Toilet Day this month I wanted to revisit Caity”s story. Caity and the Toilet Twinning Group (TTC) at Frankfurt International School recently received the 11th Toilet Twinning certificate for FIS and it is twinned with a toilet in South Sudan. In South Sudan, only 10% of the population has access to safely managed sanitation, according to WHO and UNICEF. Drinking dirty and contaminated water leads to water borne diseases such as cholera and other diarrheal diseases, a leading cause of death among children in the country. South Sudanese women and girls face the hardest challenge with enrolment, retention, and education completion remain low.

Caity, along with members of the TTC, ran a glitter tattoo stand at the recent Applefest. This created so much awareness about building toilets that Caity has come home with even higher numbers of bottles (another way the group fundraises). This means TTG@FIS will be able to twin more toilets for International Toilet Day on November 19th to make a difference in the lives of women, girls and communities.
