Today's guest is Kayla Horton and we discuss Urban Planning.

Kayla is an aspiring urban planner. She was introduced to the planning profession during her third year at McMaster University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Geography. Kayla is now finishing her last year of school at Mohawk College studying Urban and Regional Planning. She has had internships in both the public and private sector of planning. She hopes to make a positive difference to society by contributing to sustainable development practices that meet future growth demands while ensuring natural heritage features are protected. Kayla’s favourite part of urban planning is the chance to contribute to creating, and improving the communities that positively shape people’s everyday lives. Kayla is a student member of the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians (CACPT) and will officially become a Certified Planning Technician (CPT) upon graduation this spring. She is also a student member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and plans to work towards her Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation through work experience. She is excited to finish school and enter the planning profession full time this spring.

31. Urban Forestry with Andrew Almas

Welcome to the start of Season 4 of the Have You Ever Podcast. 

Today's guest is Andrew Almas, and we discuss Urban Forestry. 

Andrew is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the UBC Faculty of Forestry in Urban Forestry. He is involved in many aspects of the undergraduate program including teaching or co-teaching Greening the City, Urban Forest Inventory and Assessment, and Introduction to Urban Forest Design. His love of trees stems from multiple sources, including growing up next to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, Ontario. Eventually this interest led to summer jobs and later a career in urban forestry. He has been involved with various aspects of urban forestry in both professional and academic contexts, including working as an urban forester for the Town of Oakville, Ontario, and later as an environmental consultant. His educational background includes an undergrad in Geography, post-graduate diploma in Environmental Management, a course-based masters in Environment and Sustainability, and a PhD in Urban Forestry. His past research interests explored the role of native species and other urban forest issues on municipal planning and resident attitudes, actions, and knowledge. He encourages his current students to seek guidance on cultivating their own urban forestry interests and future career paths.
