Y’all have been hearing me talk about the brand new online community Made2Homeschool, and I am so excited to tell you that it is officially OPEN to the public! Over 20 creators have come together to create a one-of-a-kind space just for homeschool parents like you. 8 of my fellow contributors agreed to join me for little micro-episodes of the podcast… short conversations to get to know them and their homeschools. Each of them shares either a challenge of homeschooling or a favorite thing, and they all brought some GREAT practical tips you can implement to keep your homeschool running smoothly today.

In fact, the conversations were so great that some of them turned out to be, well, not quite so micro. So instead of trying to fit them all into 1 gigantic episode, I’ve split them into 2 parts. Today you can listen to part 1, and part 2 will publish on Monday.

Of course, if you just can’t wait, you can always sneak a peek at the content from part 2 by clicking this link which will take you to the complete transcript for part 1 and part 2: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/made-for-this

Here's an excerpt from my Homeschool Conversation with Kristi Stephens: "It is hard and it is hard to manage all of these things simultaneously. Obviously, as a homeschooling family, we have a lot of plates that we’re spinning all the time as we’re trying to be with all of our kids individually and together and make sure our homes are somewhat not falling apart. When we added in me working part-time, that was another stretching point. Then when we went through foster care and adoption, it was very challenging. I would say one of the biggest things that grew me was learning to be disciplined with my time and advocate for our family. I’m a people pleaser by nature, and so I am usually very quick to just bend to whatever works for everybody else, whether it is for work, or our social workers, or whatever they needed. It was really stretching for me to have to advocate for our family and say– Again, that Morning Time piece was critical to say, “Our mornings are sacred and so I can’t do things in the mornings, so here is when I am available, here is when I can do things,” and really recognizing my limitations and being willing to verbalize those to other people. I would love to do that, but we just can’t... Foster care really pushed us to see our limitations of what types of things we could step into, what types of things we could manage. I had to really advocate with our county and our workers of when I could transport, and when I could go to meetings, and when I was available, and when I was not, and that other people wouldn’t treat our homeschool as something worthy of respect. I needed to treat it as this is untouchable time. Just like if I was at work and not reachable, this is how it is when we’re in the midst of especially morning time. That really became more and more critical to us to just protect that time. I think personally things that the Lord grew me in was where I was finding my identity, and I think we’ll talk about this probably more going forward. If I’m finding my identity in being homeschool mom of the year, I will find myself overextending and taking on things I can’t manage. If I’m finding my identity in being super foster parent who can do all the things, I will overextend and I will take things on that I cannot manage, and I will burn myself out. I will burn my family out. Whatever season that I’m in, if I take that as my primary identity instead of I’m a disciple of Christ, and these are the things he’s entrusted to me today. What will I do today with this time and be faithful in that, and recognize that my limits are gifts from him. I can’t say yes to everybody, and that’s kind of hard. I mean, it’s a hard lesson for people pleasers to not say yes to everybody."

It doesn’t sound scary. I just am already overwhelmed. I feel like I’m not even doing a good job just all the other mom and life and keeping the house running, stuff I’m supposed to be doing.” How is that mom supposed to now add home educating to her list of to-dos? Jamie: I think first and foremost, you can’t borrow trouble. I did that in my early years. I looked ahead to the years I’d be having to teach upper math skills. I wasn’t there yet in the same way that I can’t fear having baby number five when I’m only on baby number one. God will give you exactly what you need when you need it. I think sometimes that really is the struggle with moms. It’s not our overwhelming busyness, it’s we look at the busyness that we have right now and we add in all this other busyness that we think is going to come not realizing that your kids grow with you and so your busyness will change and will ebb and flow. I think also many moms who have started out in the public school and have transitioned to homeschooling will confess to actually being less busy. The busy that they do have in their lives of homeschooling is actually a busyness of their own choosing. What I mean by that, when you have kids in the public school, you think, “Oh, somebody else is teaching them and then they come home.” What happens when they come home is you’re doing homework with them for hours after school. This is homework at the end of the day when you are tired and you are spent, you have no more gas in the tank, you are having to tutor to someone else’s teaching style and ways of teaching like common core math. You are actually proactively teaching and not having to reactively retrain. You get to teach them regular old math or whatever it is you want to teach versus the way somebody else is wanting them to learn, and you get to have a long runway of learning right alongside them. You get to start out with the basic fact and add on to the next fact. You’re not just thrown into the deep end having to remember all of these things that it’s been years since you’ve learned. I think sometimes we can look at homeschooling and think, “I can’t do that, that will make me so much more busy than I already am now.” I would argue that it’s the opposite. It’s when you have your kids in school and you’re racing out the door to get them to school or to pick them up from after-school activities, bundling up all of your younger ones, waking them up from naps to go pick up your older ones, whatever, all the chaos that happens when you have to live half of your life outside of your house, I think that’s a different kind of busy. It’s a busy of not your choosing."

Here an excerpt from my homeschooling chat with Tiffany:

"While I agree with the necessity of preparing our homes to house the "operations" if you will of educating our children, the most important thing we can prepare is our own hearts, in daily communion with the Lord through prayer and time in the scriptures. This enables us to face the challenges of parenting and teaching our children while bearing with them in their immaturity, and ours, while we are growing up into Christ.

With that perspective of truth, what that helps us to do is that when we are squeezed-- If we're putting scripture in, we're meditating on His word then when we're squeezed, it's the word that's going to come out. Now I'm not saying that we're going to do it perfectly and that's when we repent. In light of that, here are some other practical things. Pray not only for your children but with your children. Find simple ways to incorporate worship and devotion of some sort into your school day. Time together with Christ at the center is really transformational in our days. Even if it doesn't seem like it right at the beginning, even if the body language of children, they're sulky and they're grumpy, do it anyway. Do it anyway. Prepare as much as you can the day before. Gather all the necessary supplies for each day, your lesson planner or your books, and corral them into one spot, whether that's a basket of bookshelf, these fancy rolling carts that they have now, put everything together. It is a challenge to be-- You think you're ready to start and then you don't have this, and you don't have that. You're up and back and forth from wherever you're doing your lessons, and then you've lost your children's attention. I don't know about anybody else but that can be trying to herd cats after you've had your moment of going back and forth trying to find the things that you need. Also, remember your why. Why are we doing this? I have found that remembering why I'm doing this, has helped to serve as an anchor for when I felt like I couldn't do it anymore. That why then serves as the baseline for what we do each day, what we do each week, what we're giving our time to. Last thing, super practical, just write your lessons in pencil or erasable ink so that you can make changes. Cross things out, circle something you didn't get to today and move it to the next day or move it to next week, and carefully consider your season. You're talking about littles and having a lot of littles and those little years, they're physically taxing. We have to lean into the fact that not every opportunity is an opportunity for now. The right thing at the wrong time quickly turns into the wrong thing."
