#20 Tabitha Mpamira on the "Shadow Pandemic": Sexual and gender based violence during Covid-19 lockdown- People stuck at home with abusers.

46m · Published 30 Dec 04:41

During the 2020 Covid-19 Lockdown, there is a "Shadow Pandemic" going on all over the world. And that is-- the people stuck inside with their abusers. For some survivors, going to school or going to work was one of the hideouts or their outlets away from the perpetrator. Thanks to lockdown measures victims have nowhere to hide. In this episode, I sit down [via zoom] with Tabitha Mpamira to bring light to this epidemic.

Tabitha is a Mother, a Mental Health therapist, & a Gender activist. She is the Founder of EDJA Foundation, not only to combat child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence but also to tell the community, the legal system, and the abusers that “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!”

Long before the #MeToo movement exposed the pain and prevalence of sexual aggression and abuse, Tabitha Mpamira was deeply aware. At the age of 11, she had been a victim herself while living as a Rwandan refugee in neighboring Uganda. It was a traumatic experience that she kept buried until a return visit to Uganda many years later reopened the wound. Everywhere she went, she heard stories of children as young as four being repeatedly targeted for abuse. “Young girls are sexually assaulted frequently and justice is rarely served. Seeing a 5-year-old being resilient, going to school, even with the knowledge that her grandfather infected her with the HIV virus…I was enraged", she recalls.

This was a powerful conversation, I hope it inspires you!

#13 Carol Adams on love, empathy, and compassion. How to inspire purpose and pride in those among us who are less fortunate.

1h 7m · Published 22 Sep 15:00

"Give a human a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a human how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime" ~Lao Tsu

Carol Adams has been dubbed the Mother Theresa of the 21st century. Carol is an American born humanitarian and philanthropist who has lived one-third of her life on the African continent.

25 years ago, when Carol was 50 years old, she packed her bags and left her beautiful home state of Hawaii, and decided to devote her life to caring for the orphans, the sick, and the poor in the East African county of Uganda. Carol has put the old fishing rod metaphor to a test and the results are spectacular. For the listeners, who may not be familiar with the fishing rod metaphor, it goes like this “give a human a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a human how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.” Carol has proven this statement to be true with countless real-life success stories.

As she celebrates her 25th anniversary doing this work, many of us, her sons and daughters of the heart prosper around the world. At 75 years old, she has helped thousands of children in need with a helping hand to become strong functioning and contributing members of their communities, nations, and the world.

Full disclosure, I along with thousands of other humans beings around the world would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for the tireless work of Carol Adams.

Carol is a living legend and has truly lived her extraordinary life practicing love, empathy, and compassion.
It was such an honor and a privilege to sit and speak with my real-life hero.
