This podcast features the incredible people in recovery from a substance use disorder so they can share their story to help others find recovery in life. We talk to parents and siblings who have lived with someone going through active addiction. We also speak with addiction doctors, harm reductionist's, and police office.

On any given day, roughly 7,800 children in Oregon are in the foster care system. Nearly 500,000 children in the USA are in the foster care system. The increase in demand for foster care comes at a time when opioid deaths have surged. 

Or did you know, in America, 43% of children in a home are without a father? With such a burden on the foster care system, Valor Mentoring is striving to contest the effects of fatherlessness.   It is their belief that by mentoring through these avenues, men of all ages will be better equipped to make healthy life choices.

Derry opens up and talks about what is and isn't working and how we can improve as a community.

Harm Reduction with Haven Wheelock

Epside 12 - Haven Wheelock has been working in harm reduction for over 15 years and she currently oversees the syringe exchange at Outside In in Portland, OR. During her time in Portland, Haven successfully spearheaded the effort to expand the use of naloxone, which helps prevent opiate overdose deaths. Her effort of expanding naloxone has saved hundreds of lives in the Portland Metro area.

Pam Pearce, a person in long-term recovery, talks about her journey through active addiction from the age of 14, but more importantly, talks about her road to recovery and what she has been doing  to give teenagers, young adults, and families a place to thrive in their community from the effects of substance abuse.

Pam is the co-founder of the first recovery high school in the state of Oregon, Harmony Academy, and the co-founder of an alternative peer group, Family Inspired Recovery (FIR). She is also on the Board of Directors of Community Living Above.
