Friends in Beauty Podcast

On this week’s episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Ashley Williams to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Ashley made history by becoming the first Caribbean-American, with roots in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos Island, to be named Miss Virginia USA.

With years of experience as an event coordinator, she works with government contracting executives and is grateful for the opportunity to connect our nation’s leaders. Ashley was able to combine her passion for dance with serving the community by becoming a NFL Cheerleader. Some of her favorite experiences during her three year tenure as a cheerleader include: traveling overseas on USO tours, performing in the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime show alongside J Lo and Shakira, and skydiving with the United States Army Parachute Team.

Her goal is to continuously show appreciation for our troops by working with organizations that empower active-duty military and veterans. Earning her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, she is a proud first-generation college graduate, who completed her studies as a student athlete.

Ashley shares a lot of insight into the world of beauty pageants that is truly eye opening and inspirational for the next generation.

On this week’s episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Kristy Strate to the Friends in Beauty guest chair! Kristy is a bi-coastal Makeup Artist who splits her time between Los Angeles and New York City.

Kristy began working in makeup at the ripe old age of 19, starting in the world of print, fashion, and advertising before moving into narrative film and TV. She began department heading very early in her film career and right away realized that she loved the process of building projects from beginning to end. Most recently, Kristy was the Makeup Department Head on the 2024 SXSW select film Babes. Collaborating with Directors, Producers, Cast, and fellow crew members to create worlds and stories is a very exciting and rewarding experience that she never tires of.

Outside of her work and artistry, Kristy has an affinity for nature. She grew up on a farm, spending all of her time working and playing in fields and mountains. One of her goals for later life is to have a humble animal rescue focusing on retired senior horses.

But until then, you can count on seeing much more of her makeup, movies, and magic!

Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, BLAQ Luxury has a remarkable journey that stemmed from personal experiences, unwavering faith, fortunate opportunities, and calculated risks.

While trying to remedy hair loss, a symptom of her PCOS diagnosis, Cherice decided to take things into her own hands by creating a hair serum oil. Her determination to self-heal and not give up led her to grow BLAQ Luxury Hair from an at-home side hustle to a multimillion-dollar operation. On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Nakoya Yancey to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Nakoya is a Hair Designer, with over 30 years of professional experience. She is also a UK trained Wig Maker and Facial Hair Piece Maker.

Watching the famous show The Wire on HBO peaked Nakoya’s curiosity in the Film and

Television world of Hair Styling. In 2009 Nakoya got her first break on the film The Best and

The Brightest. From that day on Nakoya never looked back.

Nakoya learned period wig styling from working on the AMC television show Turn. After six hard years Nakoya was able to join the IASTE Local 798 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Union in 2015. Working on Turn Nakoya was able to see and work with wigs that were made by Peter Owen, Peter King, and Ray Marston. Nakoya’s next move was to go to England and learn the timeless craft of Wig Making. This move took her to another level.

She started working in New York shortly after coming back from England and with the knowledge and craft she learned overseas, she landed a job on The Greatest Showman as a Wig Maker. Nakoya has been blessed enough to work under the legendary Jerry Popolis, the late Kenneth Walker, Nathan Busch, and Jerry DeCarlo.

Some of Nakoya’s credits include If Beale Street Could Talk, One Night In Miami, And Just Like That Season 1, Shirley, Queen Suga, and most recently The Book of Clarence to name a few.

Nakoya’s main goal is to grow, educate herself, stay fluid, and viable in this ever changing industry.

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Matiki Anoff to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Matiki Anoff, originally from Ghana, West Africa, and raised in the UK, currently resides in New York. As a highly accomplished head makeup designer for major motion pictures and a former Contracted CoverGirl Cosmetic Spokesperson, Matiki boasts an impressive career.

A three-time Emmy nominee for Makeup Design excellence, Matiki is a distinguished winner of prestigious awards such as the Hollywood Guild Award, Critic's Choice Award, Hollywood Critic's Association Award, and the BAFTA Award for her outstanding work on "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." Additionally, she received the Shadow and Acts Behind-the-Scenes RISING Award for excellence behind the camera.

Matiki served as the department head for the 2021 Oscar-winning makeup in Netflix's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and contributed significantly to Viola Davis' Oscar-winning look for "Fences." Her expertise extends to projects like "The Wiz Live," "The Notebook," "Wolf of Wall St," "8 Mile, "Men in Black," "Spider-Man," and the record-breaking "Wonder Woman 84."

With a thirteen-year contract as the HD Specialist Makeup designer of the Emmy-winning Met Opera HD Live, Matiki also added successful projects like "Run the World" for Starz, a biopic for Netflix titled "Beauty," and Denzel Washington's directed epic "A Journal for Jordan," starring Michael B. Jordan.

Matiki's extensive celebrity roster includes Viola Davis, Iris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Rachel McAdams, Halle Berry, Emily Blunt, Mindy Kaling, Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Bassett, Heidi Klum, makeup icon Pat McGrath, and an eight-year contract with 15-time Grammy Award-winning artist Eminem.

Beyond her impressive career in makeup, Matiki showcased her passion for film and screenwriting by enrolling in The Writer's Boot Camp, producing four full screenplays, two of which have been optioned. She collaborated with director Jeymes Samuels on projects like "The Book of Clarence" and the period epic "Killing Castro," featuring Al Pacino. Matiki's contributions also extend to presenting the Best Cinematographer award at the 1st African Academy Awards in Bayelsa state, Nigeria, and serving as a panelist for "Careers in Entertainment" by the New York City Mayor's Office of Film.
