The Climb to a Connected Soul

41m · Published 11 Aug 09:00

In Greek mythology, humans used to exist in literal pairs. Four arms, four legs, two heads, two hearts. Zeus separated them into the body as we know it today because he feared the power of a unified whole. This is an allegory for soulmates, but in modern society it almost seems to apply to individuals. We lose touch with ourselves. The white noise of society gets loud and it’s hard to hear our own inner voices. This disconnect can leave us feeling empty, exhausted, or even just “off.” Sound familiar? Then perhaps you could benefit from the work of today’s guest, Allyn Reid.

As the first Fillipina to summit Kilimanjaro, Allyn has had a life of adventure. She’s produced a film, founded a highly-lauded conference for entrepreneurs, and now she’s moved into soulwork. Society tends to stick us inside a box. Allyn’s work connects folks from all walks of life to their inner self, which is often found far beyond the box.

Topics covered:

  • Allyn’s life experiences that lead her to soulwork
  • Why is it easier to treat symptoms rather than address the root problem?
  • What does it take for us to realize there’s a disconnect?
  • Why one size doesn’t fit all, and “neurodivergent” people may be a little less divergent than we are led to believe

Will Value - Based Spending Save Our Future?

44m · Published 28 Jul 09:00

It’s the root of all evil, but is it really? Money is like any scarce resource. It can inspire confusion, lies, fights, hoarding, and bring out the ugliest parts of humanity. However, money is ultimately a neutral force. Nobody can live without it, and most people would do wonderful things given enough money. However, in spite of its importance to all, our culture has an awkward time talking about it. Today’s guest would like to change that.

Eileen Joy, the Money Coach for Moms, went from complete bankruptcy to a comfortable life as a financial coach. Of course, it took plenty of hard work and determination, but stability is not an impossible goal for anybody. Eileen wants to empower both mothers and children with a financial education, so they can navigate a world that’s historically left them in the dark. The first step to financial empowerment is to grow beyond our negative associations with wealth and to bust the stigma. What is a “money mindset,” and how can our money finally start working for us?

Topics covered:

  • Some surprisingly easy ways to begin growing money
  • Always go over your bills.
  • What exactly is “Keeping up with the Joneses?”
  • How well are the Joneses even doing?
  • “Cash Energy” vs “Digital Energy,” and why we should know our way around both

Ism's and Syndromes and Labels - Oh My

54m · Published 14 Jul 09:00

“Live your truth,” we’re told by our society, and it’s a wonderful message. However, the unspoken expectation is that our truth needs to be beautiful on social media, it has to compare with other people’s truths, and it must represent the values of our employers. It’s a contradictory expectation, and we must grow beyond it. There’s a cognitive dissonance in our culture, and today’s guest is doing her best to disrupt that dissonance.

Melissa Chureu is a neurodivergent attorney and life coach who has been doing groundbreaking work in bringing mindfulness to an unexpected place: the legal sector. In a field of frequent toxicity, it isn’t easy to practice self care or meditation. Melissa speaks about her mindfulness practices and how we can live our lives presently and peacefully in a world that isn’t always peaceful.

Topics covered:

  • Representing ourselves to the fullest in all facets of our lives
  • What do we do when we can’t turn off the TV and avoid the news?
  • Imposter syndrome, and why it isn’t entirely the “imposter’s” fault
  • Introducing unique self-care practices into the justice system

Sit Back and Get Uncomfortable

53m · Published 23 Jun 09:00

As the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, we once again venture out into our communities, settle back into our routines, and return to our regularly-scheduled broadcasting as well as we can. Though any TNWN listener could tell you that “normal” isn’t always a good thing and that our own comfort doesn’t equate to someone else’s, today we will be examining why in more specific detail with our guest, Kerri Kelly.

Kerri Kelly is an activist for wellness, a yoga instructor, and a catalyst for change in her communities. She’s also the host/founder of the podcast/initiative CTZNWELL, promoting the idea that we must democratize wellness in order for all of us to truly thrive. Her upcoming book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, is an extension of that work. Settle in and get uncomfortable, because sometimes it takes a little discomfort to grow and heal a community.

Topics Covered:

  • How do we recondition ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of normalcy?
  • Creating a culture of accountability
  • Recovering as a community from wide-scale traumas like 9/11 or a pandemic
  • How do the relationships within our community help us grow, personally?
  • What are the limits of allyship as we know it? Can we do better?

Our Future is an Expedition

52m · Published 09 Jun 09:00

When a problem is too big for an individual to handle, it’s easy to get stuck and to feel apathetic. For instance, we can commit to curbing our plastic use by eliminating straws. However, on an individual level we also understand that this choice is only our own. The rest of the world will keep using straws. What’s the point? This is why, in nature and in society, humans occasionally require support and a like-minded collective in order to accomplish big things.

In today’s episode we speak with a like-minded disruptor, Sunniva Sorby. As a Norwegian-Canadian environmental advocate, Sunniva is an inspired individual with a special place in her heart for the poles. She’s taken the initiative to get involved with her passions in any way possible, like being in the first group of women to ski to the South Pole, traveling to the U.S. in solidarity during a major election, and taking part in scientific expeditions to gather valuable climate data. Our environment currently has an expiration date. Sunniva feels this urgency, and works to educate and inspire others to reevaluate their priorities and take action on climate change.

Topics covered:

  • How the effects of climate change can be observed in our day-to-day lives
  • How can we possibly be optimistic about climate change?
  • Why would anybody ever ski to the South Pole?
  • The best ways to get involved in the scientific community as a layperson
  • How is the global community like an expedition?

Put some hygge in your workflow

52m · Published 27 May 09:00

The dreadful treadmill of office culture looms before us as COVID restrictions lift. Back to the normal life of commuting away from our families, back to Monday through Friday spent under harsh fluorescent lights, back to the 9-5 grind that can absorb more time than “9-5” implies. With a taste of work-from-home independence, many have realized that “normal” wasn’t working for them. So what now? Today we chat with Kimberly Crossland, a business coach who founded Roadpreneur and Cruisin’ and Campfires.

Kimberly’s unique exposure to Denmark’s well-balanced workplace culture left her with a different idea of “normal,” one that would surprise most Americans. Upon her return to the country, Kimberly knew there was a better way to work. As a result, she built her businesses around the idea that people should be able to have it all: A good job, flexibility, family, travel, and the joy that comes with it.

Topics covered:

  • Kimberly tells her entrepreneurial story, beginning in Denmark and culminating in two successful businesses
  • Where does America’s workplace culture fall short?
  • Setting boundaries with ourselves when we’re self-employed
  • How do you pronounce “hygge?”
  • The benefits of social media

Burn Out to Burning Purpose

40m · Published 12 May 09:00

Sometimes we feel like our work has no impact on the world around us. It keeps coming back fresh every day, it keeps us from what we truly love, but it also keeps the lights on. How do we break out of this mundane, exhausting cycle? The first step to social disruption is squashing the stale standards we set for ourselves. Geri Paige Butner, today’s guest, is a living example of this.

Geri is a business coach who found her niche in the wake of the pandemic after leaving her corporate job and going on a journey of self-discovery. Burned out and looking for purpose, Geri noticed that she was not the only one reflecting on her life and work in this way. Many others had found that the 9-5 culture was holding them back and that they were ready to find something new. Like the old saying goes, “if you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.”

Topics covered:

  • Geri shares her journey from office burnout to doing what she loves
  • Asking ourselves the important and often difficult questions to further our own happiness
  • How COVID was a catalyst in building stronger communities
  • Changing attitudes towards traditional 9-5 jobs

Finding Purpose in Adversity

1h 23m · Published 28 Apr 19:40
What would you do if you were convicted of a gruesome crime you didn’t commit? Now imagine serving 16 years of your life for that crime, all the while having to fight against the current of a system that is not only indifferent, but often malicious? You could be furious, frustrated, and fall into a habit of resentment towards the world. Or you could take the admirable path chosen by today’s guest, Jeff Deskovic.

Motivated by his own experiences, Jeff is a first-person advocate for justice reform, policy changes, and the wrongfully convicted. His hard work and dedication have resulted in 11 overturned convictions and has successfully pushed for 8 laws to be passed. In today’s episode we will look at a normal that’s long been accepted, but has seen a growing demand for reform in recent years: the justice system.

Topics covered:

  • Disingenuous police interrogation tactics that result in coerced, faulty confessions
  • Navigating a system full of built-in biases that set many people up to fail
  • Jeff shares his story of wrongful conviction and his journey toward advocacy, legal work, and founding of his own organization to assist the wrongfully convicted
  • Why you shouldn’t shirk jury duty
  • Punitive imprisonment vs rehabilitation, and the changes needed within prisons to create a better world

You're only as healthy as your cells

50m · Published 14 Apr 09:00
Mind, body, soul… cells? Today’s guest, Heather Hiniker, is the founder and CEO of Ascent, a cutting-edge regenerative technology company in Newport Beach, CA. Hiniker’s business is built on two ideas: Our bodies are created to self-heal, and that we are only as healthy as our cells. Ascent offers many services focusing on cellular health and regeneration, and has seen an uptick in traffic since COVID restrictions began to lift and people began seeking help for the residual symptoms of the virus.   The inflammatory effects of COVID are well-documented, and so is the possibility of symptoms persisting long after the body has fought the bug and won. Addressing inflammation like this on a cellular level can be intimidating for those of us who were raised on traditional western healthcare practices. In this episode we discuss how cellular self-care is not exclusive to the wealthy, and what we can personally do to keep our cells happy day-to-day.

Topics covered:

  • Cutting edge regenerative technology like CVAC, BEMER, and Nexalin, and its increasing accessibility
  • Debbie and Heather trade COVID experiences and the discuss its inflammatory effects and the resulting impact on their lives
  • Where can a gluten-challenged individual enjoy a good slice of sourdough bread?
  • How do we deal with aging? What can we do better for ourselves as nature takes its course?

Stop playing Whack-a-Mole with your health

45m · Published 31 Mar 09:00
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

For years, the U.S. healthcare system has had this adage backwards. Every industry is more profitable with repeat customers, after all. The complicated insurance rigamarole and the surprise costs of a seemingly simple procedure add up and take their toll. If that wasn’t enough, patients commonly complain of brief, impersonal, and frustrating experiences with doctors. The demand to improve healthcare is nothing new. However, after two years of overwhelmed and understaffed hospitals, patients and doctors alike are taking an active role in finding solutions.

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Carly Hudson for a fresh perspective on our wellbeing. Dr. Hudson is a very busy and multi-talented chiropractor who advocates for self-care and personal maintenance practices on her own podcast, Healing Ground Movement. Spurred towards her career by a life-threatening illness at a young age, Dr. Hudson has cultivated a nuanced perspective on how we can take control of our own health, and discusses the unity needed within the medical industry.

Topics covered:

  • Getting the best results from healthcare providers as they currently exist by using particular language with doctors and understanding the structure of the system
  • The benefits of lifestyle fixes vs “symptom whack-a-mole”
  • Dr. Hudson discusses her personal experience with ongoing medical care and the lessons she carries forward into her work
  • Finding compatible doctors who trust both their colleagues and the intuition of their patients
  • What is our responsibility to ourselves? Where is the line between self-care and medical intervention?
