After thirty years of development, digital cameras really took off in 2003 and since have managed to all but wipe out film cameras. The multi-billion dollar digital camera industry is founded on enormous advances in optical sensors, micro-motors, displays, system-on-chip integration, data compression, memory devices, high efficiency energy storage and human-machine interaction.
