Claremont's AB 1482 Tenant Protection and Rent Stabilization Ordinances - Can they be FAIR to ALL?

1h 1m · Published 08 Apr 05:00

Assembly Bill 1482 (“TENANT PROTECTION ACT OF 2019″) and Claremont's proposed ordinances, which could further enhance the level of tenant protection provided, have presented Claremont's City Council with some unique opportunities and some difficult decisions.  Katie Wand, the city's Assistant to the City Manager, is one of the key researchers on this topic and chief organizer of Claremont's public outreach efforts on this matter.  Katie and the City's staff have made every effort to reach out to those most affected by these ordinances, all to support fact-based, fair and reasonable recommendations to the council.   Katie was able to bring the benefit of her exhaustive efforts to Claremont Speaks to break down and explain the many issues and collateral effects surrounding the ordinances, should they be enacted in the last council meeting of April 2023.

Landlords, tenants and, really, any residents who are directly or indirectly affected by these ordinances owes it to themselves to listen to Katie's unbiased and straightforward discussion of the bill, ordinances and their many possible affects to all involved.  After listening, please take a moment to accept her emphatic invitation to contact the city to contribute your own preferences and perspectives.

Human Trafficking & Prostitution in Claremont; Antonio Bestard, Local Top Defense Attorney, discusses reasons and real-world solutions.

1h 16m · Published 22 Mar 05:00

Claremont: the city of trees, bees and PhDs.  Human trafficking and prostitution are not usually the first thing people associate with the city's name.  However, like nearly every other city in the US, Claremont has its share...

...and the problem is rapidly growing.

Antonio Bestard is inarguably one of the area's top defense attorneys, especially among those focused on defending those accused of Human trafficking  and Prostitution, among other crimes.  He is one of only three Certified Specialists in Criminal Law, per the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization in the Pomona Valley.  His combined educational and trial experience - including trying over 400 criminal cases in over four decades as a Private Attorney - stands as testament to the authority and validity of the perspectives, analysis and suggested solutions he offers in this frank and cogent interview.

Mr. Bestard was kind enough fit an interview with Claremont Speaks into his otherwise full schedule to introduce himself further to the community, accurately describe the real situation at-hand and offer his own expert insights and real-world recommendations on how Claremont and its residents might begin to solve this complex and daunting problem.

Claremont Speaks is taking a new direction.  Attorney Antonio Bestard's interview, where he freely and honestly shares the considerable value of his experience, and then offers his real-world recommendations on how Claremont can truly begin to mitigate this activity, is the perfect pivot-point.  This episode is a must-listen for everyone concerned with maintaining Claremont as the premium-quality community it is known - and continually strives - to be.  Please share this episode, and contact Antonio for more information and/or should the need arise.  If/when you do speak with him, please let him know how much you enjoyed his episode, and don't be shy about asking for another.

Claremont's Parklets: To Keep or Not to Keep? Claremont City Staff's Katie Wand highlights the rules and trade-offs.

46m · Published 23 Feb 10:00

The issues that come before the City Council in Claremont are often complex, nuanced with underlying rules, considerations and trade-offs of which most citizens are unaware.  Whether to keep Claremont's parklets is no exception.

Katie Wand, Claremont Staff's Assistant to the City Manager, offers up the results of her research, highlighting the many facets involved in whether Claremont keeps their  Parklets - the outdoor dining areas permitted and built as a measure to allow restaurants to continue operation during the COVID pandemic.

Many of the patrons of Claremont's Village have come to like the outdoor dining experience they provide, but not everyone is looking to keep the parklets in perpetuity.  Now that regulations regarding emergency measures due to COVID are sunsetting, the decision to keep, remove or construct a compromise regarding the parklets comes before the City Council.

Ms. Wand does an expert and detailed deep-dive into the subject, revealing the many considerations, rules and regulations which will affect the parklets ongoing presence, versus returning to pre-pandemic form.

However you feel about the parklets, this episode is a "must listen" to fully understand the requirements, costs and benefits involved in the ongoing success of the outdoor dining experience many now enjoy.

Marshmallows...for Adults? Absolutely! - Rosemallow Artisanal's Lani Fox and Uncommon Good's Johanna Teissere explain and tempt your tastebuds.

1h 5m · Published 22 Feb 07:00

Marshmallows are reported to have been invented in Egypt, around 2000 BC.  Four millenniums later, Lani Fox - owner of Rosemallow Artisanal, a small batch artisanal confection company - has taken marshmallows to the next level.

Opening last year, Lani has been creating exciting, innovative and seasonal desserts using ingredients grown in her own garden and/or selected by Johanna Teissere, Farm Director and Master Gardener at Uncommon Good, from their farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce.  Their collaboration has raised marshmallows from their familiar spots in hot cocoa or on graham crackers to being an irresistible new dessert with unusual flavor pairings.  If you try some of their best sellers, such as loquat and fennel or lavender and mint; or those emulating cocktails, like grapefruit spritzer or Spicy Chocolate Almond Liqueur, you'll understand why Rosemallow Artisanal's specialties have become so popular, so quickly.

Take a few minutes to listen to the genuinely passionate and enthusiastic Lani and Johanna as they recount the creation of the business and their journey to this point.  And, when trying some, please let Lani and Johanna know you enjoyed their episode; there's likely a smile and sample in the bargain.
