TRANSCRIPT

ALEX: Welcome to Hear Something I Found For You! I'm Alex Tighe. This week: a clip from Heavyweight, one of my favourite podcasts of all time. The idea of Heavyweight is to help people revisit moments from their past, and in this episode, the producer Kalila Holt is helping a women named Hallie.

When Hallie was in high school she was sexually active for the first time, and she did not want to get pregnant. But she had this controlling and religious dad who would check all of their transactions and absolutely would not have allowed Hallie to have sex and be on birth control. So Hallie needed to get birth control in secret.

So one day, she went to a healthcare clinic and asked the receptionist about getting birth control – but doing it without leaving behind any financial or medical records, which the clinic obviously could not do. So Hallie was about to give up and leave, but the receptionist went above and beyond and called Planned Parenthood on behalf of Hallie to make an appointment in her name.

Hallie did get the birth control she wanted, a decade passed, and Hallie has thought of that receptionist every year since.

And so, in this episode of Heavyweight, Hallie wanted to find the receptionist to thank her.

So the producer, Kalila Holt, tracked down the receptionist's name –her name is Markina – and a phone number for Markina. And in this clip, you'll hear Kalila and Hallie calling that phone number.

[phone ring]

MARKINA: Hi, this is Markina.

KALILA: Markina hi, this is Kalila and Hallie calling.

MARKINA: Hi!

HALLIE: How are you?

MARKINA: I'm good, how are you?

HALLIE: I'm well, thank you.

KALILA (narrating): Hallie pauses, trying to figure out what to say. And then, just as she did nine years ago, she swallows her fear and begins.

HALLIE: Um, so when I was seventeen years old, I was, um, I was sexually active. Um, and I couldn't talk to my parents about it. Me and my younger sister explained the situation, like, we're interested in getting on birth control pills, but our father's the kind of person who goes over bills with a fine-tooth comb and if we got cau–

MARKINA: Oh my gosh! I do remember you.

[music begins]

HALLIE: You do?

MARKINA: I do remember you.

HALLIE: (Sobs) Really?

MARKINA: Cry baby, I'm so sorry.

HALLIE: I'm sorry too... You do remember this, really?

MARKINA: I do. I do, I do, I do, and I remember calling my boss –

HALLIE: Yeah! You did, that's right.

MARKINA: – asking her, like, okay, I don't want to get in trouble, but I want to help her.

HALLIE: Do you remember what you did next? (Sniffs) Even after your boss said you guys couldn't help because I think it would have understandably violated a bunch of ethical –

MARKINA: Laws, yes.

HALLIE: You still didn't stop, you called Planned Parenthood and you made an appointment in my name. Uh, and then the next, the following week I was able to keep that appointment and I got on birth control and I was okay. I just think about how lucky I was that you were there that day. And I wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much.

That was Heavyweight, the episode is called 'Hallie', and it is produced by Kalila Holt. Go and listen to the full episode! There is a link in the show notes. Thanks so much.
