Bonus Episode: Trauma Informed Practice - FAQs

1h 21m · Published 10 Jul 23:55

Recently we facilitated this webinar on trauma-informed practice. We had a huge response and during the Q&A we received more than 70 questions - far too many to cover in our 1- hour session!

It was clear that the topic you were most interested in hearing about was behaviour management strategies. We heard you! As promised, we took those questions to our experts and we’ve recorded this podcast episode to answer some of them.

[Behaviour Resources]

“Sitting down and reasoning is quite often very challenging for kids who have experienced trauma, and you need the foundational aspects of your relationships with educators and with others and capacity to regulate as well before you get to that higher order functioning skill of being able to reason.” - Dr Emily Berger.

As you’ll hear in the recording, research shows that students who have experienced trauma have diverse needs when it comes to emotional regulation.

Our behaviour management collection contains resources, blogs, and podcasts to support your trauma informed practice.

Catch up on the original Q&A webinar here.

Professor Martin and Dr Berger's template for a school trauma-informed practice policy is available here.

From Child Refugee to Thriving Primary Teacher - Vivian's Story

18m · Published 23 Nov 22:34

During the pandemic, as a profession, teachers have been concerned about our students’ learning. We've been putting intervention strategies in place to prevent learning loss, whilst remediating knowledge gaps caused by periods of remote teaching and learning.

Today I’m joined by Sydney teacher primary Vivian Roszkowski. As a teenager, Vivian was one of many students around the world who, even before the Covid19 pandemic, encountered enormous challenges to learning, and disruption to their education. Vivian, at age 14, became a refugee.  The obstacles Vivian faced, and overcame, when trying to complete her own education, give her daily inspiration, empathy and connection to the children she’s taught though the pandemic.

You’ll hear about how Vivian’s family fled war-torn Iraq in 2003, made it to Syria, also in conflict, and undocumented refugees like Vivian and her family were not allowed to work or attend school. She’ll take us through her family’s desperate attempts in applying to many countries seeking asylum, and her journey to Australia, where she had no English, was eighteen years old and had to catch up on her schooling in order to make it into her teaching course at uni.

Climate Change Education: Last Word (for now!)

11m · Published 16 Nov 14:00

Now that COP26 is over, we just thought we’d add some final thoughts for teachers to sit with as we head towards school holidays and a fresh new start next term. In this episode, Michael and Bron are joined by Melanie Mokken from The Rainforest Alliance and Mike Creamer, a geography teacher from Penicuik, Scotland.

Both of these guests talked about the importance of really bringing the very big, global issue of Climate Change and localising it for children in order to start them on a path of awareness and action that’ll set them up to be compassionate global citizens in the future.

Thanks for joining us on this journey, and don't forget to check out the other recent episodes in our Climate Change Education series.

Join us Friday for Teacher Voicemail, where we're asking: What will be your parting gift to your students this year?
