The Future of Water in Southern Nevada

29m · Published 03 Nov 00:25
On Aug. 16, 2021 the federal government, prompted by the low water levels in Lake Mead, issued a water shortage declaration on the Colorado River. The shortage will reduce the amount of water Southern Nevada will be allowed to withdraw from Lake Mead beginning in January 2022. The good news is that thanks to the strong water conservation efforts Southern Nevada has achieved over the last 25 years, the shortage declaration will have little impact initially. Our area already uses less water than what the new allocation is to be, even with the cut factored in. However, it has generated a lot of questions about how our future looks where water is concerned. Our speakers: Assemblyman Howard Watts Nevada Assembly District 15 Assembly Committee on Natural Resources – Chair Assembly Committee on Growth and Infrastructure – Vice Chair Dr. Nicholas Irwin Assistant Professor of Economics UNLV Lee Business School Bronson Mack Media Relations and Public Outreach Manager Southern Nevada Water Authority Marco Velotta Senior Management Analyst City of Las Vegas For more water information and tips: snwa.com Follow the city of Las Vegas on Twitter: twitter.com/cityoflasvegas

The Las Vegas Master Plan - Episode21

20m · Published 21 Mar 23:57
Welcome to episode 21 of VegasTMI- the official city of Las Vegas podcast. In this episode we talk about the new Master Plan being developed for the city. Cities in Nevada are required to develop a master plan to guide future decisions about their physical development. Master plans identify current issues and needs in the community, and set forth goals, policies and actions to address issues. They also contain specific functional areas that address many different and complex aspects of urban and suburban development, including conservation, historic preservation, housing, land use, public facilities and services, recreation and open space, safety and transportation. The city’s current 2020 Master Plan, adopted in 2000 and updated periodically over the following decade, sought to address the challenges of rapid growth and transformation during the 2000s and 2010s. Since many of the goals and policies from that plan were achieved, it is now time to plan how our community will look in the future. The master plan team is made up of the city of Las Vegas, and the Smith Group and includes an executive steering committee and a citizens advisory committee. City of Las Vegas Communications Director David Riggleman sits down with Planning Director Robert Summerfield and Master Plan Citizens Advisory Committee member Amanda Klein.
