4m · PublishedWhy do I take care of people with ADHD? Why is it so important to me that I've designed my life around this condition? What do I have to gain as a family medicine doctor?
These are questions that still plague me. The answers are in the fantastic results that patients tell me about. As a physician, we're not supposed to brag but it gets a little hard not to when you can predictably get people to come in and thank you. Before I handled ADHD, as a primary care physician, I would see everyone under the sun. "Womb to tomb" is the expression. Some people came in with drug and alcohol addiction, others with addiction to food, cigarettes, and sometimes even to toxic people. Everyone starts out as a new patient, a blank slate if you will. Many of these patients ended up having undiagnosed or untreated ADHD.
When you have ADHD, you feel like you can solve the world's problems but not your own. You'll often find such people described as "the dreamers" or "the visionaries". They can always see problems from different viewpoints. They understand both sides of an argument. However, they can get stuck in their opinions and once that's done, it will take almost a miracle to change their minds. This is a great trait for entrepreneurs to have to keep them moving forward but it can be taxing.
Entrepreneurs, in my experience, have a lot of traits that define ADHD but can be hard to spot unless you know what you're looking for. They are constantly jumping from one task to another but they describe it as "constantly putting out fires". They have trouble paying attention in meetings and have to have other people remind them what was said. They are usually on the go, pacing, or tapping their pens or their feet. On the positive aspect, they are the ones that find solutions to problems and then go looking for other problems. Their brains never just shut off. They are also the first to tell you about some news that might improve your life. It could be your boss or maybe the guy who makes the coffee every morning.
