276 My Crazy Family – Lessons – Hallowell

35m · Published 27 Nov 14:00

Lessons For Families From An Internationally Acclaimed Teacher

Kids with ADHD have Ferrari minds and bicycle brakes.
~ Dr. Ned Hallowell

Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D., is a child and adult psychiatrist, graduate of Harvard medical school, and leading authority with multiple lessons in the field of ADHD and Executive Function, an NY Times bestselling author, a world-renowned speaker and host of DISTRACTION, a weekly podcast for managing this CrazyBusy world. He is the founder of The Hallowell Centers in Boston MetroWest, NYC, San Francisco, and Seattle.

A graduate of Harvard College, Tulane Medical School, and a Harvard residency and fellowship in adult and child psychiatry, Ned served on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School for 20 years until he retired from academia to devote his full professional time to seeing patients, writing books, and giving lectures and seminars.

His landmark book, Driven to Distraction with his insightful colleague, Dr. John Ratey, set the entire psychiatric world on the path searching for more informed diagnostic and treatment strategies with more predictable outcomes for ADHD.

Lessons: Dr. Hallowell's Important Common Denominator

A noteworthy foundation of Dr. Hallowell's important message at every presentation is his compassion, his understanding, and his search for meaning within each person's developmentally positive attributes - a strength-based approach - that will contribute to their growing self-management skills. He focuses on the person, not the "deficit."

No, he's not into pathologizing - he's thankful, and into finding a Path for lifelong recovery that will work over time.

Our Brief Times Together

His first interview here at CBJ/156, regarding the changing ADHD scene with the neuroscience of "Executive Function" and the switch to diagnosis beyond appearances, was so popular we republished it for the holidays last year at CBJ/179.

Now He Gets Personal

In this more revealing interview, Dr. Hallowell takes us into the kitchen of his childhood and discusses in detail his challenging past, and how his past informs his practice, his teaching work, his relationships, and his life purpose. Thanks, Ned for your warmth, your authenticity, your resilience, and willingness to share your life story - where your lessons started.

274 Step Into Your Moxie – Vernon

47m · Published 20 Nov 14:00

Moxie For Self Transformation

Alexia Vernon - In this age of women’s empowerment, as ever increasing numbers of women are finding their voices and daring to take a stand for themselves and their causes. The publication of  Step Into Your Moxie: Amplify Your Voice, Visibility, and Influence in the World  (New World Library, October 16, 2018), by speaking and leadership coach Alexia Vernon, couldn’t be more perfectly timed.

Through her coaching and training programs and extensive speaking engagements, Alexia was dubbed a “Moxie Maven” by the Obama White House Office of Public Engagement for her robust approach to empowering women. She has helped tens of thousands of individuals speak with power and impact at work and in business, with their friends and family, onstage, on camera, and above all, to themselves. In Step into Your Moxie, she distills the communication discoveries she has made throughout her dynamic career into simple, effective, and practical recommendations women can use to experience deep and lasting transformation in all facets of their communication.

You'll love her - she's on it with helpful, practical insights!

Photo by Leio McLaren (@leiomclaren) on Unsplash

She Sets A Moxie Example

"Moxie is a mindset, heart set, and skill set that you can develop because I was most definitely not born with it. During the first quarter of my life, I experienced an on-again-off-again relationship — with my voice. One moment I felt like I was tap-dancing on eggshells, striving to be liked, give the right answers, and not be called out for failing to be enough of whatever I conjectured other people wanted me to be.

Then at other times, often close to those former times, I had an insufferable need to be recognized and praised for my achievements. I knew I was born to make a significant, positive impact on the world, but only later I learned how to redirect away from thinking about what other people were thinking of me. Now my thoughts drive directly to the objective - the impact that I want to make. In the past most of the time when I spoke my voice quavered, I used diminishing words and body language, and my speaking did not move people to take action."

Why Moxie Now?

"While shopping Step into Your Moxie to publishers, some of the feedback I received was, 'I’m not sure women’s empowerment or citizens’ marches and protests will still be a thing by the time the book comes out.'

Then, while writing the book, #MeToo and #TimesUp happened, millions of Americans continued to march on behalf of #BlackLivesMatter, #MarchForOurLives, and #KeepFamiliesTogether, and the world changed.

However, while women have marched and spoken up and out on behalf of themselves and others, it’s one thing to go to a rally or broadcast your views in an angry (or empowering) social media post. It’s an altogether different thing to tell yourself, and believe, that you possess the power and ability to advocate for yourself — especially if you are in an environment, professionally or personally, in which the people around you are complicit in maintaining the status quo.

Media outlets such as CNN, PBS, and Inc. predicted that 2018 would be 'the year of the woman,' but how many of us really feel like we have the moxie we need to consistently speak up, tell our truth, and create the future we want for ourselves and our loved ones? In Step into Your...

She recently completed a TED Residency in New York and her TED Talk on Life Skills for young kids will be available soon.

In this CBJ/272 interview, we discuss Ariane's insight into the evolution of Spiritual Life Lessons For Kids.

Spiritual Life - Books For You & Your Children

Imagine tapping into the beauty of a child's innate wisdom through the sharing of sweet and wise words of guidance and valuable life skills. Ariane de Bonvoisin's series entitled Giggles and Joy: Spiritual Life Lessons for Kids does just this, with a healthy dose of enlightened humor and profound, yet simple, messages for babies and children up to ten years old. The series includes three special books: Giggles and JoyYou Are Loved and Being You.

Giggles and Joy gives new perspectives on everyday life, by celebrating topics like Mother Earth in unique ways, a child's growing body and all its remarkable abilities, and the importance of sleep. The book articulates the power of subjects like kindness and gratitude, and also of bad days as well. She helps the reader transform tough moments by infusing them with a new light, paving the way for an unexpected, yet welcome lesson. Giggles and Joy is a book that demonstrates the power each child carries within. Through the words found in this delightful book, images are created of a world beyond what is in front of the reader. Ariane created a deeper message that gives voice to a child's spiritual nature.

You Are Loved centers on the concept that love is everywhere, breaking it down into examples so practical and relatable that speaks to a child on a soulful level. This radiant book transcends the mysteries of life into a thing of beauty; life can be happy and sad, confusing and exciting. Difficult experiences like illness, scary issues like dealing with change, and confusing matters like coping with grown-ups' emotions are all touched on with meaningful morsels of wisdom, tapping into the soul, helping children remember their inner light.

Being You breathes energy into a child's essential connection to nature, terrestrial and spiritual. Touching upon subjects like God (while honoring the abundance of diverse spiritual beliefs), in telling the truth and the importance of breathing, this sweet book empowers children to believe in their strength of character. Readers are encouraged to take charge of their lives by listening to their heart and thinking for themselves. Being You nurtures the children who read it, wrapping them in a cloak of love and light, teaching them that they have the tools on the inside to heal, to overcome, to be who they are.

Ariane describes her books as being "'spiritual' in that "they are imbued with love, optimism, humor, honesty, and common sense. They do not promote or offend anyone's sense of God or the Universe. They exist beautifully next to anyone's beliefs. It is urgent that we take care of our children's spirit as much as their minds and...

271 18Percent Support Group Online – Schleien

18Percent Mental Health Support

Zach Schleien Cofounder of 18percent a free peer-to-peer online support community. 18percent is a community for anyone living with any mental health issue no matter how small or large.

"We understand the issue is widespread. 18% of Americans are living with mental illness, which is why we created a community for folks to meet like-minded people. It can be hard to talk to someone who may not understand first-hand what you're going through.

18percent is an online community based off Slack so that you can chat in real-time with 100's of people from around the world. We didn't mention that It's free and always will be. We'll also help put on in-person events around the United States and possibly internationally."

This conversation with Zach leads to a no-cost useful support team for those suffering alone with limited resources and little direction.

More Details From Zach

We started 18percent because our family friend Louis passed away after struggling for three years with a schizoaffective disorder / bipolar type 1. The onset of Louis’ psychosis occurred when he was 19, and he was first hospitalized in October 2014.

From childhood through high school, Louis was happy, athletic, musically gifted, made friends quickly, and achieved outstanding academic success. He was subsequently hospitalized three more times for durations of several weeks to months. In March of 2017, Louis once again rejected therapy due to medication side effects along with non-acceptance of his condition, making it nearly impossible to manage. Two months later, in the throes of psychosis, he did not understand the danger posed by the nearby river. He perished there on June 4, 2017.
