Digging Deeper

by Foliage Filipino

Digging Deeper is a podcast that aims to humanize the plant experience, but highlighting the different experiences all plant parents have. Plant parents are of all stages, with diverse backgrounds. The humanization comes when we start to ask why, and dig deeper: why are plants a place of solace, and what are the daily stresses that cause people to retreat? Each episode explores our relationships to our plant friends and how they hold a mirror up to who we really are.

7: Another Place. Another Time. - Maycko Macapugas

54m · Published 29 Nov 06:00

Completely unassuming. Zero intentions. Being in the present. No agenda. These were the things I focused on for that weekend. I had no idea - no idea. No idea of what was coming my way and the doors - lifetimes - that were going to present themselves to me in mere moments. What happened in physicality in a matter of seconds felt like decades, perhaps even centuries. The one thing that I tangibly know is that I’m not who - no, what - I was before then…

Listen as I recount a psychedelic trip during a labour day weekend camping trip. What was meant to be innocent turned out to be exaltation on the highest.

Clarification: When I first recorded this podcast episode, I thought it was going to be a part of a brand new series. Then I realized I did not have time to start an entirely new podcast series, so now this episode is going to be a part of this one. However, in the future, solo episodes will be denoted by the different tone and the title of "divergence" included, such as this episode.

Enjoy!

6: Titties on Zoom: Philosophy or Comedy?

1h 6m · Published 20 Oct 01:13

An array of Saturday morning hot mess. Actually, though! This may be the most human episode yet. Mostly because we were fully present in our conversation with each other. Tina Tsao is a writer for a comedy network, but her humour is fuelled by her inquisitive nature. While we said many things in jest (and in raunchiness - you’ve been warned), we do well quickly shifting between double entendres to double standards within social justice. Tina’s educational background in Philosophy grants her the ability to shift paradigms, and challenges me to use my words to convey how I find pragmatic approaches to her hypotheticals.  While there is some NSFW content, stick around and you will find yourself immersed in some fairly thought-provoking discussions.

PS: Podcast was cut short because Tina’s New York apartment building was burning down.

5: Mirrors & the Doors to Freedom

50m · Published 25 Sep 00:15
As we journeyed through the first four episodes of this podcast series, a pattern emerged before Maycko’s eyes. A pattern that each guest had fit into. A pattern in which Maycko took as a signal to know that he is on the right track because he, too, was doing what these three guests are doing.  A listen into this episode shows that the mirrors that the world presents to us are signals as to who we are as a person, what we value, and the impact we want to create.  Through this Maycko provides insights into his own experiences, his own mirrors, and how he’s been able to navigate through that labyrinth.  From there he digs into what it means to have a conversation with yourself and how one could even fathom to begin what that may be like. It’s not easy, but it’s beyond necessary in this ever-changing world.  It’s necessary because the relationship with yourself is key to stronger relationships all around. 4: Curiosity & The World of Opportunity - Myles Philpott (Pt. II)

57m · Published 27 Aug 15:00
Last time we covered the idea that perhaps you don't need to know much about plants in order to be a plant parent. Then we transitioned into a conversation about Myles and who he is - what he's done so far and where he intends to go.  We end up landing on the topic of passion and him being a multi-passionate person. Just before we ended off, Maycko had asked the question: "How do you discern between passion and distraction?" Listen in to hear how we navigate the second half - the deeper half - of our loved-filled conversation. 3: Curiosity & The World of Opportunity – Myles Philpott (Pt. I)

58m · Published 30 Jul 11:00
Hang on, you’re going to want to crack a cold one for this episode because we’re just hanging out here. Curiosity has been something that’s been left in the dust since we’ve left grade school. Myles has utilized this as a guiding force in his day to day. The use of curiosity in his arsenal has landed him in a unique position and a world of opportunity.  Myles entered university determined to make changes to people’s lives with his knowledge of finance and accounting - then an epiphany hit and his direction changed forever. Many are baffled by his unique combination of skills and are even further perplexed by the choices made near the end of his undergrad degree. For Myles living the risk-taking life has never felt more like solid ground. 2: Sustainability – A Path to Education – Patrick Evans

56m · Published 25 Jun 15:40

What we teach our youth is incredibly important.  What they learn will forever shape the way they interact with each other, and on a larger scale the world around them.  In a world filled with frivolous spending and abundance, we see so much waste. But one man is on a mission to combine education and sustainability to change the direction of our future and the future of generations to come. Patrick Evans, a sustainability graduate from Stockton University aims to change the way children look at gardening. Planting one seed at a time, he builds a better, greener world.

1: Plants – Lifelines to Resilience – Maegan Nalagan

43m · Published 28 May 14:57

Heavy topic, but we'll keep it light and fun for you.  Lupus is an incurable disease that, while manageable, can wreak havoc on not only those who live with it, but their families as well. Our guest today, Maegan Nalagan, talks about how plants have been a key to her resilience in recent days. While a new plant parent she recounts how plants could have made her life even more manageable had she had them during her more life-threatening flare ups. With plants by her side, she's well-equipped for the next flare up, and is well on her way to that glow up.

0: Intro

5m · Published 19 May 21:20

Intro Episode! Who is Foliage Filpino (Maycko Macapugas) and why is he now doing a podcast? Plant dad turned interviewer. Maycko explains in this pre-episode that during the pandemic of COVID-19 many turned to plants for what seems to be superficial reasons of finding peace of mind and new hobbies. He seeks to explore the idea that we're turned to plants because they've given us a safe space to dig deeper and reconnect with our own value systems.
