Painter Stephanie Pierce: Impossible to Capture-Light & Time in Paintings

43m · Published 29 Sep 11:00

Stephanie Pierce’s paintings explore relationships between light, time, and perception as it is reconsidered over time. Stephanie's work has been exhibited at The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; The Staten Island Museum, NY; and Asheville Art Museum, NC. Her work is represented by Jupiter Contemporary in Miami, Alpha Gallery in Boston and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in NYC. Stephanie received a Peter S. Reed Foundation Grant in 2018 and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2014. Her work has been published in the New Yorker Magazine, Harper’s Magazine, and is included in the collections of William Dreyfus, and Joan and Roger Sonnabend among others. Stephanie's upcoming solo exhibition, Simple Pleasures, will be at Jupiter Contemporary, Miami, in October 2023. Stephanie is an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

“My most recent body of work consists of paintings centered around indulging what can be loved within my day-to-day experience. An intimate world is presented by way of sustained consideration and a reflection of light, time, and shifting perception. These kaleidoscopic paintings record ongoing transitions that crystalize an emotional light and often verge on the hallucinatory.”

Building Community, Chautauqua Visual Arts, and Giving Back

14m · Published 22 Sep 11:00

I am a huge advocate for inclusive communities as essential for our growth. In this episode, I share three reasons community is vital and two ways to build your community. I also share about my personal experience at Chautauqua as a student and how I am thrilled to be the new Artistic Director of Chautauqua Visual Arts.

First off, community is a source of comfort for artists. The creative journey can be isolating, with long hours spent working alone. In a community, you find others who understand and can support you through the tough times.

Secondly, being part of a creative group means you're constantly learning. Other artists have their unique skills and insights, and when you share ideas, everyone benefits. Not only do we get to learn about new mediums, but we also can share our life experiences.

Lastly, communities open doors to opportunities and fun. Collaborations and projects often emerge from these connections, broadening your artistic horizons and bringing joy to your work.

42m · Published 15 Sep 11:00

Naomi Vladeck is a certified life coach devoted to advancing the work of independent artists and creatives through her company Creativity Matters Coaching. She has been working with and around independent artists for thirty years as a planner, performer, nonprofit founder, and as a life coach. She holds a masters in Performance Studies and a certification in mindful leadership practice - both from NYU. Naomi has a gift for turning crisis and confusion into courage and clarity so that artists can become the creators of their lives. In the spirit of embracing big change, Naomi just sold her home, sent her daughter off to college and is about to embark on a book tour to take her coaching work to as many artists as she can! When not traveling to ice hockey games with her now fifteen year old son, Naomi is dreaming up ways to inspire artists to embrace change and find the courage to create the life and work they love!

Get Out of Your Head: Mexico Artist Retreat & Tips on Seeing Differently in the Everyday

16m · Published 08 Sep 11:00

Over the summer, I had the amazing opportunity to run our first international artist retreat to Oaxaca, Mexico. It was an incredible time filled with connection between artists and discovery. This week, I share about our trip and also share how I get out of my own head to see my day-to-day differently. We can’t always hop on a plane to get out of our routine, so I wanted to share how I “switch my lens” when I feel like I am in a bit of a rut. This allows me to generate new ideas for my work and rediscover my own lightness in life.

Tell Your Story: Embracing Where You Are From with Artist Mike Ousley

35m · Published 12 May 11:00

American born painter Mike Ousley paints a direct commentary on Appalachian life and folk traditions, though their simplicity belies their depth. Ousley has painted since childhood, and though trained (MFA, University of Cincinnati), he foils Western European traditions with the folk style of his youth. Having grown up in a small coal town in Southeastern Kentucky listening to stories told by friends and family, he credits the visionary artists and rich heritage of the region as his primary influence.

Recent exhibitions include Nine Lives at Fortnight Institute, NY; From These Hills at the William King Museum of Art, VA, curated by Michael Rooks; and, Something on the Wind at Morehead State University, Morehead, KY. His work was featured in ArtMaze Magazine Issue 22, selected by Fabiola Alondra and Jane Harmon. Ousley has been a resident at the Huntington Museum of Art, studying with Alfred Leslie; Arc of Appalachia; and, North Mountain. His work can be found in numerous private collections, as well as public collections.

Mike joins me in this episode to talk about his background and upbringing has influenced his work as an artist.
