Seduction, heartbreak and Soviet spies

19m · Published 18 Dec 06:00

This is part two of our two-part episode titled Sexpionage.

Sexpionage tells the stories of two women who were seduced by secret agents working for the East German intelligence service, the Stasi. At the height of the Cold War the Stasi would regularly despatch their agents to the West German capital, Bonn, armed with the task of forming long term relationships with single women working at embassies or government ministries. These women were unwittingly tapped for top secret information which was then passed on to the East. Both Gabriele Kliem and Margaret Hike had no idea that their lovers were spies until both women were arrested for treason. This film tells the story of the years they spent with their secret agent lovers and explores the feelings they are left with after the most significant relationships of their lives were revealed to be a sham.

The documentary Sexpionage was licensed by DRG to Little Dot Studios.

The Royal Family: A hub of jealousy and rivalry

23m · Published 04 Dec 04:29

This is part two of our story about the Royal Family in the mid 20th Century. The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level.

On one side Prince Philip was at odds with the Queen Mother over his desire to modernise the monarchy. On the other the old Queen was jealous of her daughter's sudden rise to power. The Coronation was a critical year for the young Queen Elizabeth. She was preparing to undergo the most ancient and important royal ritual, but the two people closest to her, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip had very different ideas about how it should be handled. Philip, the dashing but dangerously modern consort, was anxious that the Coronation should not be simply a stuffy replay of previous reigns. He wanted 'some features relevant to the world today'. But he was fiercely resisted by the Queen Mother and by Princess Mary, who referred to Philip as 'the Hun'.

The new Queen was caught in the middle. In Coronation Coup, we learn that Mountbatten, who had engineered the marriage between Philip and Elizabeth wanted the family name changed to Windsor-Mountbatten after her accession. Also, while the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.

36m · Published 20 Nov 04:00

Do Sodom and Gomorrah actually exist?

30m · Published 13 Nov 04:00

Sodom And Gomorrah – the names of these two Biblical cities have long since become bywords for sexual immorality and licentious behaviour. Home of excess and wickedness, they were destroyed by a vengeful God under a hail of fire and brimstone. However, most people regard the story as a metaphorical warning against sin as no strong archaeological evidence for the existence of Sodom and Gomorrah has been found – until now...

Increasingly sophisticated technology has enabled Mike Sanders to make out artificial structures on the bed of the Dead Sea. He believes he can prove that not only are they the relics of the two cities, but also that they were probably destroyed in a catastrophe about 5,000 years ago, the ruins hidden by the advancing waters of the Dead Sea. In Sodom And Gomorrah we follow him as he dives into the depths of the sea and searches for more tantalising clues.

The True Cost Of Peace After WW1

42m · Published 06 Nov 04:00

Professor David Reynolds uncovers a story of wounded egos, political scheming and strategy behind the lines as statesmen and generals haggled over the terms of peace, while the soldiers fought on the front-line.

In a journey that takes him through command centers and battlefields, he explores why half-a-million men were killed or wounded in the bitter endgame of the ‘Great War’ and unravels how Germany ultimately plunged to total defeat. November 11th proved to be a doomed peace, a prelude to a century-long struggle for mastery of Europe. David Reynolds argues that it was the frenetic politicking and brutality of the fighting in 1918 that sowed the seeds of the even bloodier Second World War just 20 years later.

How Charles And Diana's Divorce Affected Prince William (feat. Kate Middleton, Prince William & Rupert Graves)

38m · Published 16 Oct 03:00

Nearly thirty years after his parents exchanged their wedding vows, Prince William walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey with his new bride.

Timeline Tapes is the show that brings you iconic documentaries, in podcast form. The documentaries are made for TV so our host Nate Fisher will be filling in any blanks to make sure you don't miss a thing.

'My Mother Diana' looks at how Diana’s life, her relationship with the House of Windsor, the media and the public have shaped her eldest son, Prince William. When a twenty year-old Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, their wedding at St Paul’s was watched by billions; it was the last great royal wedding to galvanise the British public. But that relationship would develop into a romantic tragedy, whose effects would be more profound than anyone could have imagined. In his marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince William is entering into a new and independent stage of his life…a life in which his mothers influence and presence appear centre-stage and ever-present.. It is easy to forget that William’s formative years were not the idyll with the ’Princess of People’s Hearts’…rather they took place in the midst of a vicious divorce battle. William’s loyalties divided and fought over during the War of the Wales.

‘My Mother Diana’ is the story of Charles and Diana's marriage from a new and revealing point of view. It’s the story of how their marriage shaped William. It explores the effect of his mother’s relationships, the tell-all book she collaborated on with Andrew Morton, the effects of her Panorama interview and William's reaction to his father’s relationship with Camilla. On the surface William appears to be a product of the old order, groomed by the House of Windsor. But William is the son of Diana – who transcended celebrity and transformed the monarchy. This film seeks to understand William by exploring his relationship with his mother and examines where William was as key moments of her later life played out; because what she went through made him who he is today Why did William propose using his mother’s engagement ring? And what does it tell us about this future King and the legacy of his mother Diana? Fourteen years after her death Diana’s influence appears undiminished. But will William be the King Diana wished him to be?

The documentary My Mother Diana was licensed by DRG to Little Dot Studios.
