Eric Rochow and I talk honey bees, maple syrup, and tomatoes

33m · Published 07 Feb 17:32

On today's show, I talk about wax moths and honeybees with Eric Rochow. Eric has a video about a new way to combat wax moths in beehives. We also talk about how he gets maple sap from the tree to the evaporator. I tell Eric about dwarf tomatoes. You can learn more about dwarf tomatoes at Craig Lehoullier's blog. You can buy dwarf tomato seeds at Fruition Seeds.

I have a video showing how much damage a wax moth infestation can cause in a beehive. Clearly something you don't want to happen in your apiary.

Vermicompost and Worms with Tina Jacobs of Devine Gardens

23m · Published 22 Nov 16:09

Tina Jacobs is an entrepreneur with tens of thousands of employees. The best part is they pay her and work for free. Her staff consists of thousands of red wiggler worms that turn manure and sawmill by-products into vermicompost, which she packages and sells to gardeners all over the country.

I spoke with Tina about how she got started in the vermicompost business, the challenges she had starting a business, and how the worms make her product. She tells us what ratio of vermicompost is best for your garden and plant starts.

Visit Tina's website to learn more and purchase her vermicompost at Devine Gardens

Ever wonder what it's like to attend The Culinary Institute of America? This week I talk with my friend and former classmate at the CIA, Chef Jason Allen and we talk about what made Jason attend the CIA, what it was like, what it's like to work in a restaurant, and his gardens and orchard in Arizona.

If you're thinking about becoming a chef, this episode will give you a feel for what it's like, long hours and all.

Will Wallus and Eric Rochow with winterization tips for your home

28m · Published 31 Oct 16:03

This week I talk with Will Wallus from the Weekend Homestead and Eric Rochow from GardenFork about winterization tips for your home and power equipment. Eric gives advice for storing gas-powered equipment so the fuel doesn't gum up the carburetor.

The GardenFork podcast can be found on iTunes and you can also watch his eclectic YouTube channel at GardenFork. He also has a Facebook group with great information and a fun community as well. Great stuff.

Will Wallus can be occasionally be heard here and on GardenFork. His Instagram is The Weekend Homestead.

In the last show notes, I said we would be talking with either Jason Allen, a chef at a high-end hotel complex in Arizona or with Tina Jacobs, an entrepreneur who raises worms. Tina's company sells vermicompost. Stick around, those shows are in the works.

Fermenting basics and making garlic dill pickles

12m · Published 26 Oct 15:56

On this show I discuss fermenting basics, as in salt brine, and how to make garlic dill pickles. The first thing you need to know it's not rocket science and people have been fermenting for thousands of years. As far as brine goes....well, sometimes you need to be exact, sometimes you don't. Have a listen. The next show will be one of two interviews depending on what show I can edit first.Either Jason Allen, a chef from Arizona who I attended school at the Culinary Institute of America. Jason started his culinary journey as a teenager scrounging extra cash to visit the best restaurants he could to learn more about food.

The next show will be one of two interviews depending on what show I can edit first.Either Jason Allen, a chef at a high-end hotel complex in Arizona. Jason and I were classmates at the Culinary Institute of America. He started his culinary journey as a teenager scrounging extra cash to visit the best restaurants he could to learn more about food. Jason and his wife now have an extensive organic garden in a very dry climate and he'll tell us how he manages that.

Or it may be with Tina Jacobs, an entrepreneur who raises worms. Tina's company sells vermicompost and we'll be talking about how she does that and the benefits. I know the stuff works, I've used it to great success in starting seedlings.

Her website is https://sher2garden.com and you should take a look.

On our next show, I'll be talking about fermenting garlic dill pickles and why you should weigh, not measure, the salt you use in your brine.
